Charles Dutton, Aldis Hodge and Kathy Baker have joined the cast of Midnight Rider, the Gregg Allman biopic being made by Unclaimed Freight Productions' Randall Miller and Jody Savin.

The trio join a production that sees Tyson Ritter and William Hurt portraying Allman young and old, respectively, while Wyatt Russell will play brother Duane Allman.

Eliza Dushku, Bradley Whitford, Joel David Moore, Zoey Deutch and Chad Lindberg are also already cast.

The movie tells two stories: Gregg Allman's journey from struggling artist through the formation and subsequent success of The Allman Brothers Band, which saw the musician succumb to the excesses of rock 'n' roll; and Gregg Allman's realization at 64 that he has to get clean for good or risk losing his life.

Dutton (TV’s Longmire) will play Chank Middleton, Gregg’s best friend, confidant and assistant, with Hodge (TV’s Leverage) playing a younger version of the man.

Baker, last seen in Saving Mr. Banks, is playing the Allmans’ mother.

Shooting will begin Feb. 24 in Savannah, Ga., at Meddin Studios with Miller behind the camera. (Savin and Miller wrote the script and are producing.)

Open Road Films is releasing the film domestically while The Exchange is handling international sales.

Charles Dutton

I love Charles Dutton as an actor. He's great, and he has a great life story, but I don't see him as the elder Chank. Too thick of a build. Hodge bears a close enough resemblance to Chank that it would work. Chank is as slim now as he was as a youngster. I think Chank should play himself as the elder version.

Since 99.9% have no clue what Chank looks like and its the acting that important and not the looks I think this is ok. I saw Dutton in the lead of an off broadway play "Fences" and he was amazing. Great actor.

Hey BigDave!

I went to the open call for extras over the weekend (no - you will not be seeing me in the film ). The production folks are looking for cars, vans and MOTORCYCLES from the era (1971 and before).
I immediately thought about you and your biker /motor head buds.

If you know of anybody with the appropriate vehic's:

MidnightRider@BelleCasting.com (e-mail) would love to hear from you!

Rusty, all my buds are riding newer "baggers" these days. The older bikes are a constant maintenance issue, and the older we get, the less time we want to spend wrenching and the more time riding. I sent in photos by e-mail, but I doubt I'll get a call back. Probably not many parts for an old, fat, white headed guy, unless there's a Santa mall scene in there somewhere.

The cast is growing -some really fine actors/actresses falling into place.

I've been following the process - still no indication of who will play band members. I would think most (especially Dickey) would require professional actors. I specify Dickey because of his role as a writer and as "the other guitarist" (and Duane confidant). Certainly the other members will require some bona fide talent as well.

I am curious and interested on so many levels. I can't wait to see the final project.

Well, I'm 53 now, and I don't know if The Brothers were hangin' out with dudes 30 years their senior back in the day. But if offered the part, I'd have to seriously consider it!

There will be parts of the movie set in more recent times. You could certainly fit in as a contemporary.

As far as the 70's scenes goes we could probably play parents of the generation of the day. Lord knows, I still remember my father's rants and rages!

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/eliza-dushku-bradley-whitford-joel-david- moore-join-gregg-allman-biopic-exclusive-1201091890/

Eliza Dushku, Bradley Whitford and Joel David Moore have signed on for the Gregg Allman biopic “Midnight Rider.”

The Exchange is selling international rights in Berlin. Shooting is expected to start Feb. 24 in Savannah, Ga.

Tyson Ritter, the lead singer/songwriter of the All American Rejects, has already been cast as a young Allman. Wyatt Russell will play his brother Duane Allman. William Hurt will play the present-day version of Allman and Zooey Deutch (“Vampire Academy”) will play a groupie.

The film is based on Gregg Allman’s biography “My Cross To Bear,” written with Alan Light. Unclaimed Freight Productions’ Randall Miller and Jody Savin are producing, with Miller directing from a screenplay he wrote with Savin.

Producers are planning to include original Allman Brothers tracks in the film, along with re-recorded performances by the actor/musicians.

“Midnight Rider” was one of the band’s first successful songs. Gregg Allman struggled with drugs throughout much of his life before becoming sober in the mid-1990s and continues to perform at the age of 65. Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971.

Dushku will play a small town Southern girl who inspires the song “Whipping Post.” Whitford will play Allman’s current manager Michael Lehman and Moore will play manager Bill McEuen, who discovered the brothers and brought them to Los Angeles.

Exec producers include Allman, Lehman, Don Mandrik of Georgia Production Finance, Nick Gant of Meddin and Jim Tharpe of Roadmap Films.

I know a lot of people are expecting this film to be a train wreck, but having William Hurt and Charles Dutton have to give it a bit of credibility. Personally, I was excited to hear about Eliza Dushku - loved her work in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and especially Bring it On. I was flipping channels the other night and came across Blues Brothers 2000 - if you were able to make it through that (which I did), this biopic should have Oscar written all over it in comparison.

Gregg's book was on assorted bestseller lists for several weeks. People know he ain't dead yet.

In fact, I wonder how many copies sold....

That means the credits will have to include somebody that plays "Good Time Buddy in Cross Town Bar". I hope it's not the same guy that plays Dickey, though that would explain A LOT!

This article is about a week old. Shooting to begin this week in Savannah. Mentions a "concert in the park" scene - doesn't say where. Sounds like its all starting to gel!

http://www.connectsavannah.com/savannah/allman-biopic-starts-shooting-feb-2 1-at-meddin/Content?oid=2334483

Allman biopic starts shooting Feb. 21 at Meddin
by Bill DeYoung

Principal photography begins Feb. 21 on Midnight Rider, based on legendary rocker Gregg Allman’s autobiography, at Meddin Studios. The film is being produced by Unclaimed Freight Productions, which made CBGB at Meddin in 2012.

Like the book, My Cross to Bear, the movie will take an unflinching look at Allman’s early years in the band he co-founded with his brother Duane, and the roller-coaster of massive successes and personal trials that followed Duane’s death in 1971.

“I’ve read a number of rock ‘n’ roll biographies, and I think his book is really self-effacing, honest and raw,” says director Randall Miller, who co-wrote Midnight Rider with his wife Jody Savin (they’re both producers of the film). “And he’s not afraid to say he didn’t like people, or their music. For us, as filmmakers, the fact that the book basically pulls no punches is pretty cool.”

Allman, who lives in Richmond Hill, is an executive producer on the film, along with Meddin owner Nick Gant.

Miller says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been extremely hands-on during the process. “If you’re making a movie about real people, you’ve got to work with the people,” he explains. “I can’t tell a squeaky-clean story; I’ve got to tell a story that has all the warts or it’s not a movie. So Gregg is really open. There’s stuff in the movie that’s even far worse than what’s in the book.

“We talk about being a movie like Ray, where you really get the journey and you understand what the fame bubble is like.”

Allman’s battles with drugs and alcohol are well-known; he told Connect last year he got clean and sober in the 1990s. In 2010, he underwent a liver transplant. “He’s like the cat with nine lives,” Miller says.

Academy Award winner William Hurt will play the present-day Allman. For the salad days of the Allman Brothers Band, the role will be assayed by All-American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter.

Many of the classic Allman Brothers songs have been re-recorded by an all-star band, without vocals: Ritter will sing them live. And Wyatt Russell, who plays Duane, is an accomplished slide guitarist who can reproduce the band’s hottest licks.

In some scenes, the characters will lip-synch to Allman tracks, a technique Miller and Savin, and co-producer Brad Rosenberger, used for CBGB).

Casting isn’t complete yet, but several roles have been filled: Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy) will play one of the Allman Brothers’ most rabid fans, and Eliza Dushku (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Miller/Savin movie Bottle Shock) has signed on as another “woman of the road”.

CBGB co-stars Bradley Whitford and Joel David Moore will also be in town for the Midnight Rider shoot, which is expected to take about six weeks.

Unclaimed Freight has hired young SCAD actors to fill several smaller roles; extras casting is underway now.

While Meddin’s soundstages will be used to film the interior scenes, the Midnight Rider company will also shoot in downtown Savannah and on Tybee Island. There will be a “concert in the park” with the erstwhile Allman Brothers Band, too. Miller isn’t sure yet where or when that will take place.

Additional scenes will be shot in Macon, the Allman Brothers Band’s base in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.

Miller, Savin and company decided early on to change the title, the director explains, because My Cross to Bear – although it accurately describes Allman’s many ups and downs – has a religious connotation (it’s actually the title of a song Gregg wrote for the band’s debut album). Midnight Rider (from another Allman song) is an evocative title.

After spending hours talking with Allman, Miller says, he understands why the autobiography had that name.

“Even today with Gregg, the whole thing about his brother is really right under the surface. There’s a bit of guilt: ‘Why did I survive and he didn’t?’”

Well, what do you know? I got a reply from Belle Casting to my e-mail.

"Hi Dave,
Thank you for your submission - you have a great look for this film! Where are you located? The film is shooting in Savannah, and we need to know if you are able to drive to Savannah with as little as 24 hours notice. Please also include your general availability from Feb 24-Mar 27.

Thank you,
Belle Casting"

Still no guarantee this will pan out. If I get a call and my boss doesn't mind me taking a day off, I'll try to work it out. If I can't go, I can't go. Still, cool the possibility exists.
