The first taste of One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band can be had in the new Guitar World... with Clapton on the cover.

To tie in, with the theme, they excerpted the chapter on the making of Layla. It would not have been my first choice for a first glimpse, to be honest, but it works nicely, with a very clearly defined story arc, beginning, middle, end..

I also interviewed Warren about Play All Night and the stories are running together.

Nice job, Al. The article(s) in that magazine raise some very interesting points.

When Duane linked up with Clapton, there were incredible musical sparks. The guys just CLICKED. The Layla album makes that obvious, no need for me to go on with that. Plus, Clapton was a very established musician, far more successful than the ABB at that point.

So, the offer to Duane to leave the ABB and join Clapton must indeed have been seriously tempting. It is hard for us in hindsight to really see how tempting it must have been, because we all see Duane as the force behind the ABB; that is his identity to me. He is not a Domino. I think of him as Allmans all the way because I have lived my whole life with the Allmans Brothers as an entity and Duane as a Brother first and foremost.

However, he had the chance to be something else that might have been maybe equally astonishing. So, indeed, what if Derek & The Dominoes had continued with Duane? What if Duane had continued with Derek & The Dominoes?

Another thought along those lines is that after Duane passed there were rumors of Clapton joining the Brothers. I think I read somewhere years later that he thought that would be interesting but he was never asked. So more thoughts to ponder...

Looking forward to reading the book Alan. Enjoyed your other stuff and I am sure this will be as good or better.

Thanks.

Steve - everything else I've written on these topics was but the appetizer for this project, though of course I didn't realize it at the time.

Jim - Glad you saw it. I didn't quite realize it was out there. All indications I have are that Duane took the offer very seriously, and the ABB never offered Clapton a gig. That was pure rumor, and honestly probably the last thing Dickey would have wanted.

My own assessment is that Duane took the offer very seriously and the experience of playing those gigs and/or just some time to contemplate made it clear to him that he had to stay with the ABB.

Who knows what would have happened had he decided otherwise... likely the ABB splinters, AFE never gets recorded - and the Dominos still fall apart pretty quickly... Fun to speculate about.

Glad you asked. YES! it is 5x longer, and has 150 photos to start. Actually more different than that but that's probably enough.

I was worried about this confusion and really wanted to change the name, actually, but got voted down on that front.

so Al, should we wait for the paperback version that will have an updated Chapter for the 45th anniv finale?

Just kidding (maybe not).

Looking forward to the expanded book and let us know if Philly is on the itinerary.

Does the book cover the post-89 albums (recording, stories behind the sessions/songs, etc.) and any equipment information?

Lots on post 89 recordings. Lots and lots. Not a lot of gear talk.

There will definitely be an added chapter for the paperback but you're not going to want to wait for a year. I'm also really really happy with the production- cover, photo repro, paper stock etc. About 150 photos.

So, I bought the first incarnation a couple of years ago. There will be an added chapter for the paperback addition, but I'm not gonna be able to wait for it. Basically three versions of the same book with an added chapter here and there, and pictures along the way. I think I'm gonna wait for the paperback edition and hope my public library picks up the hardcover. Frankly I don't have that much disposable income.

Got it. Do what works for you.

Only thing I want to clarify is this is a different book than the E book. Really different. Not just another version.
