I just use the free AVG, and then upgrade the free version when it's available?
Been using it for years with no issues.

AVG can be a resource hog. Avast free version is fantastic and is easy on the CPU and RAM. At home or at work I have experience with Norton <choke>, Trend Micro, AVG, Panda, Kapersky, and others and I have found Avast to be the most robust and resource friendly. Also, Malwarebytes is a great anti spyware & malware program with a terrific free version.

All the above is based on use with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, & 8.1, although I do run Avast for Linux on a Ubuntu 12 virtual machine.
