He will play the elder Gregory in the biopic filming next month. Interesting casting. Thoughts?

Jon Voight would have been my first choice... but I guess he's a bit old now...

I will wait until the movie comes out to judge, but that casting seems really off. Coupled with the same producers' CBGB movie, this movie has "pretending with bad wigs on" written all over it.

I disagree. I've had a bad feeling about this movie for months now, but getting an Oscar winner to play Gregg was a complete surprise. I don't know if I would have chosen him for the role, but Hurt brings some gravitas to this film that it didn't have previously. I'm thinking this is going to get a pretty big release. Lots of information about this film on the entertainment websites now. It has some buzz around it.

The choice kind of came out of the blue. Director Randall Miller ran into William Hurt at a local Safeway store. Hurt said "How ya'll doing tonight". The next day he got a call and was cast as Gregg.

If William Hurt can pull this off then he ought to get an Oscar. I seriously doubt that will happen though. Don't see how this is going to work at all. Not at all.

I also think it weird that the guy playing young Gregg looks a lot like Duane and the guy playing young Duane looks a lot like, well, Devon Allman.

I think these movies are VERY hard to pull off and I wish em luck but the casting seems pretty weird so far.

Love the John Voitt idea.

I haven't seen many of his movies, but he's an acclaimed actor. And in good movies they cast the best actor, not the guy who looks the most like the person being portrayed.

He and Gregg have both been in Altered States.

I still think Nick Nolte should've been cast.

Cool pick. That leaves Dickey as the last central band character that has me wondering.

It doesn't matter what they look like. Anthony Hopkins played Nixon in the Oliver Stone movie and he totally captured the essence of Nixon. My question is what on earth ever happened to William Hurt?

He's been waiting for a great role like MCTB?

If they have a time machine lying around, they could go back and get Billy Crudup from Almost Famous.

Totally agree. Approx. 10 years ago he would have been perfect to play an elder Gregg.
Especially when i was watching "Anaconda" back then i thought "Damn, that's Gregg Allman" on multiple occasions.

This movie is going to be bad and most people here know it. Some things just don't make good movies. Before the hate starts and people say what about the Doors I say Oliver Stone did that one and is a good director and writer. Just don't be disappointed over this movie.

Let me try again:

In 1980, William Hurt and Gregg Allman were both in Altered States. (rim shot)

I'm here all week, folks! Try the chicken!

I am as skeptical as anyone, but Hurt sure seems like a positive development to me. I sure won't pan it until I see it.

I've been a proponent of JV for years as the elder Gregg. Perfect bone structure and complexion. Hollywood can take care of the rest.

I like John Hurt but c'mon, name the last big screen movie he had a major role in. The guy probably leaped at the opportunity to play a famous rock star --- a role John Hurt isn't exactly type-cast for.

No ill will towards anyone involved, but I hope this all falls apart. Probably wont at this point though.

I really did not like the idea from the start, it kinda sounded b level straight to dvd. I guess maybe William Hurt adds some cred but.....

I dont think Greggs story is that outstanding IMHO, it's really nothing different than what any other rock star had been through, pretty much the same formula.Been there done that.

What ever happened to the Mike Myers Keith Moon story?

You're much less skeptical than the "this is going to fail, I know it, it has toooooo!" crowd.

The Who are still talking about making a movie. I imagine it's a little like this Gregg movie except there are at least two huge egos and the Moon estate involved - and that's before anybody writes the movie. Mike Myers is now 10 or 15 years too old for the part.

We should all be thrilled with William Hurt. He's done quite a bit recently according to IMDB...maybe not his best stuff, but he's been working, so his skills should be sharp. The biggest concern should be writer and director Randall Miller. I haven't seen his past work, but the list on IMDB seems shaky. I have a lot more confidence in the film now that William Hurt signed on. An actor of his caliber wouldn't agree to a garbage script.

The big question for me is, why does Gregg have full veto rights? Since when does a screenwriter or studio ever relinquish creative control to a film's subject? Did the Ray Charles family have that power for the movie "Ray"? Or Nixon, JFK, J. Edgar Hoover, The Doors, Facebook's Zuckerberg, etc? Gregg says he "can pull the plug on it at anytime". As I'm writing this, I'm thinking Gregg is full of it, or uninformed, just like the Oteil comment, and many other blunders he's made in recent years.
