Title edited to reflect the news. Good news in my book however strange the way information was presented.

I wasn't aware that he was leaving, that's a huge loss for the band. Oteil's interplay with Butch in particular was really quite special. Now if we hear Kofi is leaving the TTB, should we expect the Bumbling Beachtree Burbridge Band to pop up at next summer's festivals?

Can't blame the guy, ZBB is one of the hottest bands in the country right now. Can't say the ABB is doing much lately to keep their fan base.

I figured that might happen. I had brought it up in the thread that talked about him working with Zac Brown and how their schedule is much more hectic than the ABB and it might be hard to get a balance.

So if this is true I guess the big question is who will be replacing Oteil?

I say bring back Rook

It will be tough to replace Oteil, I vote for George Porter Jr.

Tal Wilkenfeld would be cool.
I have no doubt that their selection will be a worthy replacement.

This is kind of sad to say, but I'd like to hear something more official. I hope it's not true.

"Going through the motions would be a real bore. I know a band that plays the same songs in the same order, they even say the same **** at the same time every night.”

Is he referring to the GAB?

I feel the same way but Gregg's saying it isn't official?

After the Beacon, the Allmans head south, where they'll play their own Wanee Festival on April 11th and 12th in Live Oak, FL and fans might see a new incarnation of the band at these shows. “Oteil’s not with us anymore,” says Allman, referring to bassist Oteil Burbridge. “I don’t know if he’ll be back to the Beacon or not. He’s gone with Zac Brown.”

I got this link by clicking on it in the RS article which tbomike posted. The link said, "See where The Allman Brothers rank in our 100 greatest bands of all-time." The bio by Billy Gibbons is well worth reading.

Kind of sad, huh? He says he's not sure if Oteil will be at the Beacon or not, and Oteil's site says he'll be with the Allmans at the Gregg tribute, Wanee, and the Peach Festival. Who the hell knows?

Would be nice to see Tal or Porter or perhaps an old school guy like Phil Lesh or Jack Cassady!

Doesn't sound promising for a nice 45th Anniversary tour. Getting pretty near the end with Oteil's departure no new music. Will probably just get a filler player at this stage.

I really love the way he plays..
I think it would be a big loss, if for no other reason, than the pure good energy he brings to the stage..
I seem to recall at some point , somebody ( Gregg I think) saying that if anyone in the current lineup left, they would just pack it in..
Time will tell..
Either way, I wish him nothing but the best..

IF - Oteil IS out (and I'm wearin' out the knees of my jeans prayin' it ain't so)

IF -the ABB (Gregg/Butch/Jaimoe) want to go with a young guy ...

I would recommend Birmingham's Brandon Peeples. Brandon plays lately with Tommy Talton. He is young, energetic, plays upright and electric bass and sings - well qualified.

IF - the ABB wants a "seasoned guy with a name" - it would be hard to go wrong with George Porter!

The ABB family of bands on Facebook announced Oteil has joined the Zac Brown Band and "Hopes" he can make the Beacon run.

This will break up the longest continuous line-up in the history of the ABB 2001-2013

I heard this over the holidays from two different people, both of whom have FAR better connections in the ABB family than myself. I was tempted to post here, but as Marley put it, I was hoping it wasn't true.

I have said for years that I thought the current lineup of the Allman Brothers Band would be the final lineup. When you're wrong, you need to admit it, and I was wrong.

I am sure the ABB can find a capable bassist, but the thing that concerns me the most is the chemistry that will be lost, especially since the ABB don't play that much any more. Will the ABB even be around long enough to "break in the new guy" at this point? That is a real question in my mind

I am particularly sad that I apparently won't be hearing Oteil play with Derek any time soon, in any context. That just sounds weird to even say that. The last time Oteil and Derek didn't play together regularly, Derek was about 3 feet tall and wore a Braves cap all the time and George Bush Sr. was President.

I am proud of Oteil though. The Zac Brown Band is one of the biggest-grossing, hardest-working live bands in music. If we can take off our ABB-colored glasses for a minute, it is simply a better gig than the ABB in many ways for Oteil, and I'm glad that his talent has gotten noticed outside of our little jamband circle.

Wow, this is the saddest news I've heard in a long time. I'm shocked and really upset by this. Oteil was such a huge part of this band. The best part of the ABB, in my opinion of course, is the rhythm section. Hearing those 3 drummers combined together with Oteil was as good as it gets, literally. The phrase "roaring freight train" perfectly describes them. I don't know a whole lot about bassists, but I can't imagine any replacement being as good as Oteil technically speaking, but especially with chemistry. Derek often was quoted saying that the reason he sometimes laughs during a song is because he is blown away by something he heard Oteil do. That's the type of chemistry we may never get again with the ABB, and that is just sad. And his energy was awesome to watch. I remember seeing them one time at the Tower Theater in Philly and I had amazing seats up front and stage left, with a perfect view of Oteil. I never saw him with so much energy...he was head-banging! He was going crazy dancing and gyrating all over the place, barefoot of course. It was nice to see at an ABB show since most of the time there is little to no movement at all. Who else can play Instrumental Illness like that? Who else is going to give us those amazing bass solos, the scatting....it will all be dearly missed. Someone, please ease my mind and throw some names for me to Google that have Oteil's chops and skills, so I have an inkling of faith that the best rhythm section of all-time may be saved.

You hit the nail on the head. A band that gets together 2 months out of the year will have a hard time breaking someone in.

Very sad for the Allman Brothers Band but Great day for Oteil. These guys are winding down not doing much good time to get something much better.
