Lou Reed loved the blues. A personal remembrance of the time I turned him onto one of the greats:

I was 23 or 24. The thing is, I respected Lou but he wasn't a huge deal to me... never a personal hero or anything, which made it easy for me to just talk to him...

About a year later, I interviewed Gregg, Dickey, Phil Walden, Tom Dowd and others for the first time for a Seven Turns feature for Pulse. That was a much bigger deal to me on a personal level.

That is a cool story .. thanks! I remember seeing Katie Webster after Swamp Boogie Queen came out. She could rock her piano when she wanted to.

It's funny how things work out sometimes. I was interviewing Smokin' Joe Kubek for American Blues News and I asked so many guitar related questions he stopped me and asked if I play. I said sure. So he invited me out to jam which I did and I was nervous as all hell but he kept his word and allowed an unknown dude without a band from an online magazine to play on stage with him.

Sometimes you meet the real person, sometimes you meet the persona. Sounds like you met Lou Reed the person and that's fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

Alan,
Great story! I'm a HUGE Lou fan and was saddened by his passing, but have read excellent stuff about him recently (check out Chuck Klosterman's tribute, among others). He could be a pain in the butt, but there's no denying his influence and brilliance. I shook his hand on the Animal Serenade tour as i was front row, and gave him a letter, but never met him, although every one of my NY friends had a sighting at some point in their life. Charles Thompson (Frank Black) once told me that he was on the same bill as Lou but when he saw him at the hotel in the morning, Lou hadn't had his coffee yet, so he was too scared to chat with him!
