I hope he doesn't go on the road with them. That would be disappointing to say the least.

How could Oteil playing with the Zak Brown Band be a disappointment? Oteil can play any style of bass. He's an absolutely incredible musician!

After dropping out of the TTB so he could have more "time", it would be hard to see him tour with any other band at this point besides the ABB and the TTB.

I don't mind him working, touring would be another story altogether. Obviously he can do whatever he wants, but it would be disappointing none the less to see him out touring with anybody but the ABB or the TTB.

Interesting. I just hung out with Zac's regular bass player John Driskell Hopkins in Raleigh at the IBMA, who is badass and has an excellent album out now called Daylight with the award-winning Balsam Range backing him up. I shall see what I can find out;

Talked to some peeps, and apparently John Driskell Hopkins is playing guitar recently with Zac and not bass, which makes sense because John is badass...so Oteil might be wandering in...at least on the new album.

Interesting...does not seem his type but what do I know. I guess he knows more than any of us.

What would you all classify(genre) the Zac Brown Band as?

The drummer in Zac's band is Chris Fryar, who of course was Oteil's drummer in the Peacemakers from a few yrs ago so I can certainly see a connection. Gifted musicians such as Oteil and Chris enjoy playing more than one style of music I'm thinking; more power to them.

What I've heard of the music, I would call it a type of modern country.

i'd say its the country version of jimmy buffett. from my limited exposure they "jam" a little, and the shows seem to be good if thats what you are into.

ZBB has been crossing into the jam world a little bit. Gregg has played with them, the did a set with SCI at Locken, and John Bell (WSP) sat in with them last week.

Their radio stuff is pop country, but if you watch a live show, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Lots of sort of "airy" jams ala Blue Sky and Jessica (obviously, I'm talking about the type of music, not the quality). They stretch out their songs and do some classic rock covers.

ZBB is a lot of money, and a significantly higher touring budget. FWIW.

And for a "paid employee" like Oteil, really, what does the next year or five years look like for Oteil with the Allmans?
