Saw these guys tonight and man, am I glad I did. They ABSOLUTELY KICKED ASS.

I've been a fan of Dan since he was in the Georgia Satellites back in the '80s. Since then he's recorded several solo records, one on Def American in the '90s, Songs For The Hearing Impaired, that is a certified Rock & Roll Classic, as well as a couple with the Yayhoos with Eric "Roscoe" Ambel of the great Del Lords (who I ALSO saw tonight - caught the tail end of their show at the Pour House in Raleigh after the Homemade Sin show was over), Terry Anderson of Raleigh, who is with the Olympic Ass Kicking Team and who wrote Battleship Chains for the Sats, and of course, Mauro Magellan on drums and Keith Christopher on bass, who are also in HS. But the SECRET WEAPON in Homemade Sin is the great Warner Hodges, who was a founding member of Jason And The Scorchers, with whom he recorded some of the absolute greatest rock records of the '80s.

This guy is incredible - which I knew because I first saw him with the Scorchers in what was probably the greatest double bill of my life in Chicago in '86 at the Park West, which was down the alley from my APT. at that time - the Satellites were the opener and Keep Your Hands To Yourself was just breaking and they were just unbelievable, with Rick Richards just RIPPING out wicked slide leads and Dan running around like a madman, like a modern day Confederate General leading the charge against the Damn Yankees. Simply one of the best rock shows I've ever seen.

And THEN the Scorchers came out and finished blowing the roof off the joint, with Jason climbing all over tables doing his crazed-southern-Illinois-farmer-gone-NashVegas-country-punk-rock-and-roll-v isionary-icon thing, blowing a wicked harp the whole time, and Warner doing his whirling dervish, literally spinning like a top in a CLOUD of cigarette smoke until it made ME dizzy (he had a wireless setup), just these crazed maniacs that gave everything they had until it HURT and left it all on stage. I wakled out of there that night like I had witnessed a snakehandling ceremony in the hills of West Virginia and had undergone a religious conversion...

I had heard Warner had had some SERIOUS substance problems, that he had gotten real sick and maybe his life had been in jeopardy at one point. I do know that he used to smoke like a CHIMNEY and he probably went through a pack of smokes during that 90 minute show I saw in Chi-town. Not good.

I can happily say that Mr. Hodges is clean, sober and LOOKS and PLAYS like a million bucks. This guy just LOOKS like a Rock Star and can back every inch of it up. And is such a classy Southern Gentleman on top of it too - we talked briefly after the show and I congratulated him on 21 years of sobriety after Keith Christopher told me that Warren had 21 years in. He thanked me and said, "Thanks, Bother, 21 on September 27", at which time I told I had just had my 28th "anniversary" on Sept. 5th. He really seemed moved and I could tell that we had a common bond. Man, what a cool guy. And a TOTAL class act.

Now to the show: unfortunately there were MAYBE 40 people at the Southland Ballroom in Raleigh on a Wednesday night, but the band didn't care. They came out and put on one of the most KICK ASS R&R shows I've seen in the last 20 years. Dan Baird is such an AWESOME songwriter and he just lives, breathes and sleeps (I think!) Rock and Roll. He gives every ounce of his being putting on a show, and although HS doesn't really sound like the E St. Band - more like the Stones - he reminds me of Bruce in his utter commitment to giving you 110%. He was drenched after the show and was laughing and having a grand old time in spite of the sparse crowd. At one point I yelled out "All Over But The Crying" which is one my FAVORITE Satellite tunes off The Land Of Salvation and Sin, and he said, "No, too many downer songs", which was odd because they had just finished Keep Your hands To Yourself - but then he looked at Warner and said, " You wanna do it? OK." And man, DID THEY - it was just flat out awesome. I had 2 guys come up and thank me, one profusely, for requesting it. For me it was the highlight of the night and I suspect it was for others, too. I told Keith Christopher later that I thought it was appropriate since they did Keep Your Hands first, that was the BEFORE of the relationship and AOBTC was the AFTER. He thought that was pretty funny....I did too, frankly.

Warner does this thing with his guitar where he flips it around his shoulder and then catches it right in time to take his solo. Normally I'm not big on flashy moves but you really have to see him do it to believe it. And the guy is such a PHENOMENAL player that it is just part of his licks, really. I don't know anyone else who COULD do it and I've never seen anybody else even try.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE go see these guys if there are within 100 miles of you. They just played DC last night and I know they're playing Nashville, which is their home turf. They need the cash - they were the victims of a Swiss Border Guard scam and got burned out of over 13 Grand - http://ultimateclassicrock.com/dan-baird-swiss-border-scam/ - and they are one of the brightest burning lights of good, old, KICKASS Rock and Roll and they truly deserve your support. And a little of your cash....

Mark my words - you WON'T be sorry.....I'm STILL buzzin' from the show.

Thanks for indulging my written diarrhea.

Thanks for the cool review. I really love Dan Baird's music. With the Georgia Satellites, Yahoos, Homemade Sin and guesting with the Dusters. Fortunally he apparantly seems to really dig the Netherlands and Belgium and tours here a lot which means i can see him live on plenty of occassions. The Georgia Satellites show i saw back in the late Eighties was one for the history books. Rock On Dan!

Too funny. I was just spinning Salvation and Sin this week. A great album.

Good to see you back again, in the land of salvation and sin...

I absolutely love this band. Alexandria was as close as they're getting to Pennsylvania and I would have had to miss 2 days of work and get a hotel to see them. Too much to spend right now unfortunately. I ordered the new album though and can't wait to hear it. I finally got my hands on Warner E. Hodges "Centerline" album with Dan Baird producing and playing guitar. What a kick ass rock & roll record. They play together in the Bluefields too which is another great roots band.

I usually tell everybody who will listen and plenty who won't about Dan Baird & his "solo" career. He is indeed a great writer. Check out the tune "Two For Tuesday" from the first Homemade Sin record and you'll get a sense of how I fell about Dan.

In the song he sings
"Iím in love with this road
Iím in love with this car
Iím in love with the radio station
Thatís playiní me some CCR
And itís two for Tuesday in America
Iím gonna turn it up loud
Doesnít matter what the next song is
Johnny never let me down."

I feel that Danny never let me down either.

they play Europe constantly because the good people of Europa appreciate the rock & roll. Here we have American Idol and autotune. Luckily some fine folks across the continent have recorded shows and I've found about a dozen DB shows to listen to. His between song banter cracks me up too.

One more thing - Dan played in the Suffering Bastards with Bobby Keys for a tour. I caught them twice and it was dyn-o-mite! Google some u-tubes of these guys as it was fantastic :-)

A guy was buying Centerline and I mentioned that the Haggard tune on it was awesome. Warner lit up and went on to say how Merle was THE country guy in the late '60s/early '70s when Warner played drums in his parents country band. His Dad played guitar and his Mom sang. During the show he said Dan HATED any equipment from after the '60s and Warner's dad saw Keith Richards on SNL and then had to go out and buy some new piece of gear that Keith used, including a curly cord. Apparently Dan just rolled his eyes...

Before they started I asked Dan if his Tele was an Esquire and he said "Actually it is but I added the single coil (pickup in the neck position)." I said it was it was a beautiful guitar and he said "It says nice things about you too." So I said "it lied"....so his BEFORE show banter is funny too.

Yeah, the Bluefields are awesome. I remember seeing Joe Blanton in the Royal Court Of China way back in like '85. They were great and I was really glad to see him hook up with Dan and Warner.

P.S. During the show Dan said, "My band will kick your band's ass."

No argument there.

I have been bummed for years that the Georgia Satellites never got back together. I'd love to see Dan Baird sometime but it has never happened. Seems like he mostly plays in Europe.

By the way, off the top of my head I don't recall which song, but Blackberry Smoke covers one of their songs and it is really good.

Blackberry Smoke covers "Another Chance."

As far as a Satellites reunion, Dan & Homemade Sin is pretty close because Sats drummer Mauro Magellan is tow and original Satellites bassist Keith Christopher (of Keith & The Satellites fame & misfortune) is holding down the bottom end. I must say I absolutely love Rick Richards and I'd like to hear him play with Dan again but Homemade Sin is a fine substitute and Rick plays on every Izzy Stradlin record so there is plenty of Rick Richards work out there to enjoy. Plus he's in Western Sizzler, for which Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke provided vocals. That's another great, pure rock & roll record that only about a dozen people have heard. You can get it at CDBaby and it's well worth the money.

Saw Rick with Izzy and Ju Ju Hounds at Metro in Chicago in like '92, I think it was. It was filmed for MTV but never broadcast to my knowledge. Fantastic show - I always thought Izzy was the heart and soul of G"N"R and once he left they sucked.

Got that about a month or two ago. Good stuff.

We have similar tastes. As they say, great minds think alike.

You're not kidding! He's done about 10 albums with Rick and they all rock out. I recently saw a video of Izzy joining the Axl Rose band on stage for "14 Years" and it was terrific.

We definitely have similar tastes.

Great review Brofan. I've loved the Scorchers and the Sats since the Fervor and Keep The Faith EPs. Never saw them on the same bill tho' Rock and Roll couldn't get any better than that I reckon!
I'll be seeing Dan Baird and Homemade Sin in Newcastle UK in a few weeks. I know it will be a great show because those guys are simply incapable of playing a bad one!

Postscript:

Another reason to see Homemade Sin is that they have copies of the band's 2CD/DVD combo Live At The Sweden Rock Festival June 4th 2009 set, which is now officially out of print. At 20 bucks it is a steal. And T shirts are only $15.

I picked up that 2CD/DVD combo Live At The Sweden Rock Festival last year. Come to think of it my brother paid for it because my birthday was around that date. Cool release at a very reasonable price and the icing on the cake was that it was fully signed by the band. Although i must admit that the recording quality isn't that great. A bit like an official bootleg. But if i remember correctly it was released to make up a $ 10.000 loss when their equipment was confiscated by the Swiss custom authorities while touring Europe the previous year. At the show were i bought the discs Dan and Mauro kinda "knew" i was a hardcore GS fan when i also asked them to sign my Japanese GS Tour Program from the Eighties. I think they never saw it before. All the bandmembers always hangout with the fans. Fine folks indeed. Oozing and sweating 100% pure rock % roll.

Actually the DVD that they are selling to defray the ripoff (see my first post above) is the Black And White one that they shot in Nashville http://www.jcplmusic.com/store/viva/ - I had Warner sign that one for me. I met all three guys (had a cigarette with Keith outside after the show - a real character) and although I talked to Dan when they came before they started, I didn't "meet" him....

Here's the one you and I have that is OOP: http://www.jcplmusic.com/store/dan-baird-homemade-sin-sweden-rock-2009-live -dvd-cd/

What I REALLY want is a copy of his impossible-to-find Redneck Savant CD:

I have that Redneck Savant cd. Live in Switzerland. The same country were they got screwed a bunch of years later. Well Dan did. Redneck Savant was recorded with the Sofa Kings. Great band as well. First time i heard Dan do ABBA's Dancing Queen!

I have another Homemade Sin live CD they sold on the road. It's a volume II of "Feel So Good - Live" so i guess there's at least one more release out there that i don't have yet.

BTW, when i got Live At The Sweden Rock Festival it actually was a 3CD/1DVD set. The Sweden Rock Festival on 1 CD and DVD and the Borderline show is a separate 2CD set. Value for money indeed.

Through the years i had all those releases mentioned above signed by Dan and other bandmembers. I guess i went kinda overboard with the whole autograph thing .

Thanks so much for the link. I've been looking for an original copy of that for a while too. I have mp3 but I want to have the real thing. Now if I could just get the Sweden Rock DVD CD set y'all are talking about I'll be in business.
