We traveled to Nashville this weekend to the cathedral of live music, The Ryman Auditorium (The original Grand Old Opry). This is the birthplace of Bluegrass & Country Music. In our opinion this is the best concert venue in the world to see a live music. The Ryman has hosted concerts of every genre since 1892. We try to make at least one concert a year in Nashville at the Ryman. If you have never seen a concert there and like live music. Make this a destination to go to sometime soon. We drove down from Chicago a day before and we met up with Chitown Pat and his wife Teri when they drove down on Friday from Chicago.

The show were went to see was the Gregg Allman Band with his son Devon Allman and his band opening up the show. This historic 2362 seat venue has great sight lines and wonderful sound in almost every seat. We love the balcony in the center. As you walk in the Ryman the sun is setting in the west and and the beautiful stained glass windows light up the entire venue like you are in church. It is truly an amazing sight to see as the lights go down and the band takes the stage and the hall reflects all the ornate stained glass everywhere.

Gregg Allman and his band too the stage and started the show with his old hit, I'm No Angel and the night was rollin. The show moved along nicely and Gregg sounded & looked great. His vocals are strong as ever and his Hammond B-3 playing is always top notch. As the show progressed Gregg had a few surprises in store for his hometown crowd. Gregg was born in Nashville in 1947. For the 6th song of the show Gregg brought out his old friend and mentor Floyd Miles to play 2 old blues songs that the crowd loved. As Floyd left the stage Gregg and the band kicked into Stormy Monday and from the side of the stage country music superstar Keith Urban walked onstage and the crowd went wild. Now the show was really hittin it's stride and high point. They played a smokin version of Stormy Monday and were all smiles after the song ended. Next up was Can't Be Satisfied from Gregg's last solo CD, Low Country Blues and Keith Urban stayed out to play on that song too. Everyone in the Ryman was rockin and Keith and Gregg looked like they were lovin playing together. After that Keith left the stage with a hug & handshake from Gregg. Next up Gregg introduced his son Devon and they played a wonderful long version of the Allmans Brothers song Dreams. This was an amazing part of the show as Devon strolled across the stage to stand next to his father and played his guitar solo. It was very eerie almost like seeing Gregg & Duane in the early years of the Allman Brothers Band. From our seats in the 4th row center balcony Devon looked very much like Duane with his Les Paul strapped on. When Dreams ended Greeg & Devon embraced each other with huge smiles. The rest of the concert was filled with more of Greggs hits from his solo career and the Allman Brothers. His band is really amazing. He again brought out Floyd Miles for a great version of Back To Daytona near the end of the show. As the band left the stage after nearly a two how show the crowd was all worked up from what we had just witnessed. The band took a long break and returned for the encore with Keith Urban & Devon Allman. Gregg also had strapped om his electric guitar so they had 4 guitar players for the final song One Way Out. They all came out blazin and took the song to new heights. It was fantastic seeing Keith & Devon just jammin ther asses off and Scott playing some incredible solos too. This was one fantastic night at the old Ryman. We were all so very happy to have been able to see a concert this great at this awesome venue. Here is a link to are our pictures we took at the show.

Nice review and some nice pics. Been to the Ryman once, just for a tour. Didn't get to see a show. Beautiful place.

Thanks again for sharing.

From the pictures posted, it didn't look like Bruce Katz on keyboards. I checked Katz's site & no mention of Gregg gigs. Anybody know what the scoop is & who played keys the other night. I thought Katz was a wonderful fit for piano in Gregg's band.

Thanks for the review. Sounds pretty cool. I am really not a fan of country music form the last 20yrs or so and really don't know alot about Keith Urban. I think I saw him on a show with Skynyrd one time playing guitar and he seemed to be tearing it up pretty good.

It was a very good review. A bit of oversensitivity by the author, but a very good review nonetheless. And I just got around to the pictures...........what a beautiful place.

Nice review. Keith Urban put this up on his twitter and Devon retweeted it and how much he enjoyed playing with Keith.

Nice review and awesome photos.
Saw Keith both nights at the Clapton Crossroads festival at MSG and Keith tore it up with Vince Gill and John Mayer. He is an excellent guitarist and I enjoy his playing. That was a nice treat seeing both Devon and Keith Urban that night!!

Hey... I do want to point out that when I read your response I thought it was funny because I assumed you meant it to be funny.

When I read his response, I read that as funny too, as if he was sarcastically responding... Like when my buddies and I say something incorrectly and point it out to each other, we'd call each other an a**hole, jokingly...

Now I don't know if that's how he meant it that way... but it does show how hard it is to get across tone in writing sometimes...

Interesting. I don't remember anyone else calling me that. Yes, "calling"..........as in calling names. Have I just been transported back to 7th grade?

Great review. Don't know that I have ever seen Gregg look or sing that well - going back about 30 years.

Definitely not Bruce Katz on keys but forget who his replacement was.

Me, I'm just a big sensitive douche. If you're gonna be a douche, better to be a sensitive one. Won't damage the douchee nearly as much.

Saw Gregg tonight and thought it was a good show. Loved the version of Floating Bridges he does with his band so much better than the album version. Thought it was cool that Marc Q was in the band and was wondering when he joined his band. That and Jay Collins was great on sax all night and gave the night a jazzy vibe
