The Deep Purple site "The Highway Star" had an amusing piece about bands whose line-ups have changed many times. Which band has had the most members pass through it? Some of the folks who added comments in the comments section said that Hawkwind or Santana need to be considered, but here is the article:

I was working for Swedish Radio at this year’s Sweden Rock Festival and someone in our team brought up the topic of member changes in classic rock bands. Deep Purple was of course accused of being worst, as they always are, even by fans of the band. To prove DP aren’t worst, and as research for a segment in a radio show we broadcast from the festival, me and a friend came up with this list of how many mbers each band has had (and THS editor Nick added a couple of entries):

Yngwie Malmsteen: 37
Whitesnake: 26
Steppenwolf: 26
Lynyrd Skynyrd: 25
Jethro Tull: 24
Uriah Heep: 24
Black Sabbath: 23
Guns ‘n’ Roses: 23
Rainbow: 22
Blue Öyster Cult: 22
Ufo: 22
Allman Brothers: 21
Anthrax: 20
King Crimson: 19
Yes: 18
Accept: 18
Scorpions: 17
Fleetwood Mac: 16
Opeth: 15
Deep Purple: 14
Kiss: 10
Rush: 4

Yes, Yngwie is a solo artist and should perhaps not be on the list but this was for a somewhat funny show on Swedish Radio so we put him in there for fun. We also included a couple of Swedish “dance bands” which beat Yngwie by far. Some of you will also argue that Whitesnake, Rainbow and King Crimson are some sort of solo venture but our criteria was that if you have chosen a band name, you are a band.

If Yngwie is counted like that the Alice Cooper would be real high also as would Eric Clapton and countless others.

Cool list some of the numbers are suprising. Axl sure has gone through guys. Never would have thought some had so many members like Scorpions and Anthrax.

Canned Heat & Black Oak Arkansas have had more members come & go than any band listed there.
Molly Hatchet has had a bunch too.

I would expect Steely Dan to be high on that list. Also John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

I have a "Honk if you played guitar on a Steely Dan album" bumper sticker on my car.

I don't think anyone even knows how many people have been in Santana.

Just off the top of my head, since Eric started touring under his own name (Post-Dominos) in '74...and not counting one-off performances, cameo appearances, for benefits or TV shows, etc ...just his own touring bands, I've counted 65 people. (keyboardists being the most with 15)

I think SAVOY BROWN is the all time champ as far as personnel changes go.

Probably Chuck Berry as his band changed from town to town.

Zakk was never a member of the band. He only played 1 night as a stand in.

To get to 21 for the ABB I think they'd have to be counting Jimmy Herring and Bonnie Bramlett. I don't think either were ever official members of the band - but anyone who played as many shows with the band as they did I would count. But then the question becomes what to do with people like Jim Essery, Keith Englund, Thom Doucette, David Grissom, Bruce Katz who played multiple shows as part of the core band and in some cases appear on official releases?

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers could be in there. Spawned many blues greats from his band.

Perhaps a band should be defined by putting out records. Rather than just sit-ins now and again.

I like that bands try to keep an original lineup as long as possible like Phish. That way, they gel more musically. These days its generally a musician and 'friends' type particularly in the 'jamband' genre set up which probably benefits the musicians more to be able to keep it interesting for them.

As of 1984, the total number of members of Spinal Tap was 37. Actually, I think at the end of the film that would go to 38 after Mick Shrimpton spontaneously combusts(2nd drummer to do that, who would have thought?) and is replaced by Joe 'Big Mama' Besser...

The total by now would probably require help from NASA, especially after the Live Earth version of Big Bottom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN42uzNFVmQ
