Hmmm ... Alan ... don't know what to say on this one. Some folks here I'd venture to say are more knowledgeable than yourself on this subject. I can see that you want to definitely hit the die hard market first. However, there are several books on the subject so ... I hope this tome offers some NEW insight, revelations, photos, (maybe a detailed look at the 89 - present history) something other than a rehash. GA for one seems to have an aversion to dirt or the truth. And we notice that Butch Trucks is writing the forward to the book. That alone sends up a red flag to many here as Butchie's recent penchant for revisionism is well known. So ... you can understand the general concern. Of course there is the Dickey Betts issue ... Anyway you have always seemed like a nice guy (Too nice for the job at hand???) Your friendship with the current band is definitely a concern at least for me. For the most part I've enjoyed your work, I hope I can continue to say that.

Thanks charles.

I don't want to pre-defend myself or my work. I think it will speak for itself and that it offers plenty of new insight. I've managed to maintain relationships with most everyone, and am not speaking for anyone, or taking sides. I am a journalist and in this case a historian of sorts - lots of letters, documents, etc...

Once the book is out, and people have read it, I will be happy to discuss any aspect, and will definitely do some chats etc.

But that's all still months away.. if you're suggesting I should have kept quiet for now.. well, you may be right. It's too early to get detailed about much, so all I can say is withhold judgment until you see the book.

Fair enough. Of course ANY publicity is GOOD publicity as long as they spell your name right ... right? One question I do have is do you ever get, "Gee, Alan do you know you have two first names?" As being born Chris Charles, if I had a nickel every time I heard that, I'd be independently wealthy.

I'm very much looking forward to it. I just pre-ordered.

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure what the whole above discussion is about. I've been friendly with many of the members of the current lineup (and a couple guys from past lineups), so I'm not sure what the problem is ...

Like the cover. Gonna pick it up for sure. Didn't buy the ebook. I'm old fashioned. I want a hardcopy.

I'm really looking forward to it also. It is always good to have new reading material on the band. I understand that some are concerned about bias opinions and that is a valid concern. However, it is always the reader's job to separate the wheat from the chafe as much as possible. Anytime you have several books or writings on a subject, you will have varying opinions and perspectives and the reader must look at all of them and form an opinion of the truth for himself. I'm delighted to have another book that sounds like it may be a good historical reference on the band and we can draw our own conclusions from it.

How will this differ from One Way Out: An Oral History of the Allman Brothers Band Their Story in Their Own Words ?

I really loved that, especially the expanded version released shortly after the original.

Will this be offered in Kindle form?

Looking forward to pre-ordering, and will wait for HTN to have it for offer

Thanks and good question.

It is so different that I really wanted to change the name, but publisher really likes it, so...

First of all, it's going to be approx 6 x as long... New interviews including and def. not limited to: Chuck, Johnny Sandlin, John Hammond, Kim Payne, all members, including many hours with Jaimoe, Thom Doucette and a whole bunch of surprises...

Also, well over 100 photos, including some rarely seen and some I don't think have been seen at all, though I'm hesitant to claim that given how widely things fly around online. Photographers include: Stephen Paley, Twiggs Lyndon, Kirk West, Danny Clinch, Jim Marshall and Sidney Smith.

It will be available in Kindle and other Ebooks as well.

Alan, I was confused by this too. I assumed since the previous One Way Out oral history (which is pretty definitive itself, even if it has a lot of material from the early years that will always get retold in any Allman Bros narrative) that you released had been updated and expanded shortly after its release, that this was the same book yet again. Is this an actual hard copy release rather than the kindle-only version that was previously released? Really dig oral histories, so curious to know more specifics about this if it is significantly different as you say.

PorkChop, It is very very different.

Or expansive... Most of what was there is still there, but a lot more added.

It is almost 100,000 words longer! I have been working on it full time all year. Hundreds of interviews, multiple trips...

Also includes separate stories on Twiggs, the Beacon, Duane and Dickey's style, the Big House, Gregg's songwriting and a few more...

So much I'm excited to share and I promise to do so as it gets closer and closer...

sounds cool, the previous version seemed definitive to me - especially regarding their split with Dickey and the dynamics of the past 15 years. So I'm all in.

To Charlesinator I say read the previous version of the book, Alan is plenty knowledgeable on the topic, it was a must read for any fan.

Thanks Porkchop. I really appreciate the support. I'm glad you enjoyed the Ebook so much but this one is far more definitive, though I hesitate to use that word.

Porkchop, I was unaware of the previous book. To be honest I am more interested in the past few years. Seriously what is left to learn about the early years although I certainly up to hearing something. Now let me get this straight this book coming out contains the earlier book plus 100,000 words extra? If that is the case I'll order the new book, probably on Kindle.

Well, then you'll be pretty happy as the highlights are definitely regarding the dynamics of the past few years. It's the most open you will find anyone discussing the Jack years and Dickey's departure.

Alan is a very solid writer. Big in China was great. I'd recommend it!

For this book, I'll be getting the hard copy - where is the book signing?!

Took a digital holiday yesterday and took the kids to the shore, celebrating the end of the school year... now catching up on some posts...

One thing I am sure of is there has not been another book like this one... all primary source interviews and documents... nothing picked up from other sources.. interviewed well over 50 people, many repeatedly... and am getting deeply into some areas that have not been explored, or explored fully and properly.. one small but important example: the real Twiggs Lyndon story... I will explain a lot more and preview in much more detail as the release gets closer.

Thanks Sully... There will definitely be some book events/parties/signings. I will do a tour, but not sure how extensive yet. Since you live in my corner of the world, however... I have some cool ideas and you will know as they develop.

Will have a party in Maplewood and one in New York I think...
