I posted this in another thread about Dickey but thought I should post it here hoping to get responses from others who saw the shows at City Winery.
Saw the show last night at City Winery NYC. Dickey was in a foul mood. Probably not the best way to start a show. I was real close to the stage and I thought the Dickey looked really tired and angry. He admitted that his feet hurt so bad that he had to wear another person's shoes. He also admitted to not having showed since leaving Pennsylvania. I thought he played well. I thought he sang poorly. He left the stage during IMOER. Duane played great in his absence. I am a rookie when it comes to Dickey Betts shows. This was only my 2nd. The first time being back in 2006 at the Beacon. I thought Duane was so much this time. I enjoyed the show and would probably go again tonight if I wasn't going to see Sir Paul in Brooklyn. I got one of the guitar picks that the roadies threw to the crowd after the show. It's got Dickey's signature on it. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.

I've seen Dickey a few times on his own since he left ABB. twice he seemed like he was trying to emulate the Brothers. Set up of the original band with Chuck and Gregg on either side, dual percussion and drums, etc.

We weren't impressed either time but I thought I'd give him another chance. When I saw the setup (and I've been to City Winery before so knew the stage is on the small side) I did a holy crap moment with the three Marshall stacks jammed in on stage and the bass player virtually hidden behind the keys.

To me - and I'm no expert although I've seen ABB numerous times since the Fillmore - Dickey is a shadow of his former self. I heard people wondering as the opening act played if Dickey was going to be his "usual pain in the butt". And to me he was. Seems like no one had seen the venue so they brought all their equipment. And it didn't seem to take long for Dickey to start complaining. All I could think in my head were comparisons to the current ABB lineup. I think Oteil is better than Dickeys bass player, Derek Trucks is heads and shoulders above Dickey on guitar and Warren is way better than either Dickeys son or the other guitarist. For a $85 ticket price the comparisons to me were inevitable. To me that band was not ready to play that place.

And it's a shame that a guitarist formerly of a band that's sold out The Beacon fifteen nights has come to this. I'm not intimate of the whys Dickey was asked to leave the ABB but I thought no way can he keep up with either of the current ABB guitarists. He seems very bitter to this day. And a bit of a Prima Donna.

Dickey betts is IMHO one of the greatest guitar players I have ever seen but he is a major league head case with all kinds of issues and problems.....it is a real shame because it takes away from his talent...I have seen Dickey and his band numerous times and some of the shows were excellent and some were absolute train wrecks with him obviously drunk and slurring his words and angry and annoyed...on other nights he was in good form and the shows were excellent....I keep going because on the good nights he can still be magical but it is a real shame he is such a mess

I agree and I keep going back as well also because I love Duane 's playing so!
however the sometimes off shows played in my decision not to haul on down on the subway with service issues . I already had a ticket too.
I expect a slam in' show tonight.

I had a layover in Denver once and met a very well know musician from a band that most people are familiar with. We were having a couple of beers and the conversation drifted to the Allman Brothers and this gentleman had some very unflattering things to say about Dickey as a person. He lauded Dickey as a musician but said that his departure from the Brothers was long overdue and long in the making. He told me that he had an explosive and violent temper and was just a highly disagreeable person to be around. Another time I met a gentleman who worked for Jaimoe-who has over the years gotten me some backstage passes in the Carolinas--and he told me some similar things to include that he had actually assaulted other members of the band. I was at a Phil and Friends show in Charlotte and DB&GS were the opening act and I remember that when Dickey came out to play with PLQ Warren looked as if he directed some angry words to Dickey about something. I was very close to the stage and did not pick up the conversation but it obvious that there was some animosity going on. It certainly seemed out of character for Warren but then again I am sure that he had put up with some guff from Dickey over the years. I love Dickey's playing and i consider him to be one of the all time greats. He has certainly influenced my playing more than any other guitar player save for Clapton. Too bad he displays some character issues.

Unfortunately, you're either going to get the cowboy or the indian. We've known this for years....on a good night the guy can absolutely crush it and then there's the other nights. It is what it is....I for one, still adore the man. Everybody's got their issues, hopefully he gets himself right.

Thanks for the report, even though I'd prefer it be different. Still looking forward to seeing the man in Aug, angry or not!

Well it was about time for a Dickey thread anyway good, bad, or indifferent...

Too bad the show sucked. We've all had our share. Hopefully the next go around will be better. Hopefully Dickey makes it out back to So Cal one more time.

Dickey was quite good last night, especially on IMOER, Blue sky and a few others...

I don't doubt reports of previous night at all... Just goes to show, you never know.

Yep. One can't control his mouth and the other can't control his anger. What a pair.

Sorry to hear of Dickey's woes. If it is attributed to his drinking, he should take a look in the mirror and seek treatment. Dickey was one heckuva guitar player in his day, but perhaps as he got older, he should have backed away from playing music for a spell. I think Dickey still has "it" in him to play extraordinary, but he first must get treatment.

I didn't care for the comment either. We were discussing Dickey - not who he didn't get along with in the band either. From the reports Warren doesn't care for him either.

I have seen him several times and he was good one show and not good the other two. Also, back then, Duane was not as up front with his playing as he is now so that contributed to my frustration. I heard a clip here of Duane playing Blue Sky without Dickey at a recent show and he sounded excellent. I however, am not sure I will go see him again. I miss the old Dickey and I believe he will not be back.

As if it needs to be stated again. This guy just doesn't get it. He was given more than his share of opportunities in the ABB before they finally had to give him the boot. Doesn't matter how "great" he was back in the day, doesn't change the fact that he's a total jerk, and that is 1st and foremost when it comes down to it.
