Details of how so many A-list performers agreed to take the stage at Madison Square Garden for the 12-12-12 Superstorm Sandy relief concert last December are beginning to emerge, as is the name of one band who simply said no. Led Zeppelin turned down a chance to reunite for the cause, at the personal request of former president Bill Clinton.

A recent episode of ‘60 Minutes‘ on CBS profiled the Robin Hood Foundation, the charity responsible for the quick turnaround of dozens of superstars to New York City. Executive Director David Saltzman credited his charities board of directors — including powerful entertainment insiders like Harvey Weinstein — with assembling so many in such a short period.

“Harvey Weinstein had this great idea that we could enlist Bill Clinton who could convince Led Zeppelin to reunite to perform at the 12-12-12 concert,” Saltzman says in the video below. Clinton loved the idea, and made plans to make the suggestion at the Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony that took place just weeks before 12-12-12. However, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had no troubles turning down the offer.

“Bill Clinton himself asked Led Zeppelin to reunite and they wouldn’t do it,” Saltzman says with emphasis into the camera before continuing to focus on all who made the event a $50 million success. It’s doubtful the rock legends made any new fans in the New York City and New Jersey area with this news.

I'm confused I guess as to why Bill Clinton's asking them would have any more of an effect on them saying yes than anyone else's or a promoter? They've already proven to the world that if they want to do it, they'll do it, and if they don't want to, they won't. And they're from England......

Can't blame them. Pretty short notice, and they have a reputation to protect.

If President Clinton asked me to do something, I'd probably turn it down too.

Count me among those who just don't see the connection between Bill Clinton and Led Zeppelin.

I'm just curious about the thought process that led somebody to say "How do we get Zeppelin to play? I know, we'll get Bill Clinton to ask them!" Why not get Clapton, or the Stones, or somebody with some kind of plausible relationship to Led Zeppelin to do it?

My best guess is that this is a compliment to Clinton's legendary powers of persuasion. I figure they thought Bill Clinton can talk anybody into anything, so why not give him the toughest ask?

Drama Queen Harvey is a huge Bill & Hill Clinton booster. This is just a taste of whats coming in 2016 election.

I didn't realize Weinstein was a big Clinton supporter, but if so, that confirms my theory.

I am a pretty big fan of Bill--less so of Hillary--but there are people who have such a sense of hero worship of the man that it distorts their sense of reality. Sounds like Weinstein is one of those people. "How do we get Zeppelin? We'll get Bill to handle it, he can do anything!"

It kinds of reminds me of those old SNL skits about the Bears fans and Mike Ditka "If Bill Clinton was arm-wrestling with God, God would let Clinton win, just because he's so awesome!" "Da Clintons!"

And yes, when Hillary runs in 2016, the conservatives who think the Hollywood/celebrity crowd is in the tank for Obama will have a whole new understanding of the kind of clout the Clintons carry with that demographic. She will have celebrities lined up around the block to support her, especially women.
