On April 2nd & 3rd I went and saw the two Black Crowes shows in Port Chester, NY's Capitol Theatre. Great nights, Great music, Great venue. The Black Crowes are without Luther Dickinson's services, but adequately replaced by Jackie Greene. The new guy brought some game, He handled his spots well, There was a time or two where he was finding his niche, but mostly he kicked it, and at times brought his own flavor by either timing or tone. Subtle pauses or drop outs, definately not note for note. At a tribute show that's a form of flatterery for the honorees, but at a rock show, I'd rather hear some individualism and Mr Greene was supplying that. The band is pretty tight even with only a handful of gigs under their belt. Very rootsy & raw rock & roll. I love what they bring to the table, if I had to pick a five year window of sound, it's as if they emerged from a '69 to '74 place. It's unneccessary to box anything, but It's a treat to have them putting out these sounds in today's day & age.

Between the two nights they played chunks off their 1st two albums Shake Your Money Maker & Southern Harmony & Musical Companion, with no more than a song or two off the majority of their other discs, but hit most of them. They played more doubles than I'm accustomed to, but the sheer genius of their alternate take Croweology album of mostly acoustic stuff is evident in the performances. Subtle changes in the intro's, outro's, heck some of the midtro's are altered keeping it fresh and fun. I went with my wife for the US opener and my kid brother for the latter. My ol' lady loves Wiser Time and she got the short clean version. They played Wiser again the next night, but had the whole jam packed cosmic trip in the there. We got Jealous Again, Remedy, Soul Sing, & others both nights, but tweaked versions at times. I'd have to say the shows may contain 2/5th's of nightly repeats (with the intermittent Croweology twists) to try to appease and thrill even the most casual of BC's fans, but the other 3/5th's portion of the setlists are packed for the deeper cut loving, hard core, multiple night fans. Classic Rock at it's finest!

I wonder if the show is more "hits" oriented as they are still breaking Jackie in and don't want to give him to much of a workload right away. Either way they sound good on the tapes I've listened to and your review is making me even more excited for the Detroit show a week from Sunday

Is Adam MacDougall still playing keys? Is Jackie doing any vocals besdies back up?

It will be interesteing to see if/when they enter the studio what the music will be like.
The last two were good, kinda of a mellow/folky sound, if those are right descriptions.
I miss more of the rock edge they would bring at times. I have always liked Rich's playing ,nice melodic gutar riffing/phrasing/timing. I was hoping to hear more of him solo during the break, but oh well. This is good too.

I was there also and was enjoying what I heard of Jackie. I have much respect for Luther but did not dig his sound in the Crowes. I also love that venue. A great 2 nights of music.

Yes It's still Adam on keys & it's mostly all Chris so far on the vocals, I think Rich has grabbed solo vocals only on Oh Sweet Nuthin' and just the paired vocals like Jealous Again & the like. With no Mona & Charity all the gents are singing back-up with the exception of Steve.

2 shows, Midnight Hour 12/12/70 & Boston Tea Party 7/24/69, A slice of R&R bliss. It was so heavy I was able to use it as a paperweight to hold down the curled poster!

Just kinda curious about Luther not being in the band anymore. I guess it's not a suprise since it's kinda been aa rotating slot since the bands enception.

Was it known from the begining that it would only be temporary situation for the Luther, did the Crowes want to go a different direction, Luther want out,etc....?

Question.......I'm going tonight at the Vic in Chicago and was curious if they've been having opening acts on this leg of the tour? Tickets say doors at 6:30 and show at 7:30 which seemed a tad early for the boys.....they usually have openers, just wondering if anyone could help??
