Does anyone know if Gregg mentioned the passing of his old best friend Danny Toler last night?

Two people at the show told me that they were disappointed no one said anything so I believe they did not mention our beloved Dan last night.
They did have a bunch of new photos of musicians that were gone, probably put together before Dan's passing on but it would be wonderful to include him in the visuals as well.

A little deeper into the set Haynes also introduced a new original he wrote for the band called Dusk Til Dawn.

Wow, I was thrilled when Mule played 1983 during their Hendrix-themed Halloween show, but I never even dreamed the ABB would play it.

This is probably an example of a song that some people think is too far outside of the normal ABB box, but it is one of my favorite songs of all time. If the Allmans did as good a job with it as Mule did, I don't see how it could be anything less than amazing.

Rob, it was amazing ! The 1983> Mt. Jam> 1983> Mt. Jam was about 35 mins. of pure bliss. It's only the first show, but this will be one of the top highlights when the run is over. Derek and Warren tore up that Mt. Jam, Wow !! Just that part was worth the price of admission . I love Hendrix so this just blew me away. Still shacking my head in amazement.

Will write more about this show tomorrow, but have to get ready for tonight's show. I think we are in for one hell of a run !!!

Look like a solid first night, and by that I mean effin' great! Blind Willie, Key, Les Brers, a new tune, Mtn Jam and 1983, yeah I could have dealt w/ that. Gregg indeed sounded strong vocally. I like guests, but doubt they were missed this night.

Need to start counting sleeps!

Reposting what I said in the Beacon forum thread:

Best show I've seen since the '09 run, I think. Gregg sounded excellent and engaged, and while he jumped the gun a few times, you could see it was because he wanted to nail his entrances, not because he was lost. Rain was beautiful. I'd described it as a sort of countryfied, Grateful Dead-ish version. It doesn't sound much like the original or the Gregg solo version, which is kind of melancholy. Great stuff. I'm listening to the MunckMusic and Dusk Till Dawn is just starting, so I can't too any real analysis here. But if you combined the feel of Queen of Hearts and the chord changes of Patchwork Quilt I think you'll have sort of an idea of how this one sounded. It was long and mellow with a very slow jazzy section in the middle. I'm looking forward to hearing the lyrics better.

The first set Ain't Wastin' Time No More was maybe the best version I've heard. It was huge. Gregg flubbed the lyrics to Leave My Blues at Home but it was a hot with some great Warren-Derek interplay. I know some people have said Blind Willie McTell has been getting slower and slower, and maybe someone heard you - this one went at a quicker pace than any other performance I've heard. The spacey version kind of smolders, this one was more intense. The body portion of Les Brers was a little slower than usual and I thought they relaxed Key to the Highway a bit, too. And 1983... wow. I saved this for last because it's the most unexpected, stunning modern ABB cover choice I can think of. I was surprised when they brought back Kind of Bird three years ago, but not this surprised. 1983 has always been one of my favorite Hendrix songs and it never occurred to me as the type of thing the Allmans might try, but it was remarkable and I loved the segues into and out of Mountain Jam (with a more-prominent-than-usual Third Stone tease). It's one of those "why didn't I think of that" choices - it's long and jammy with a memorable, weird guitar hook, and I remember wondering years ago if somebody could do a 1983 > Liz Reed medley. The song fits into Mountain Jam much better than Dazed and Confused and Smokestack Lightning do, and I really liked hearing Mountain Jam without the long drum and bass solos, which doesn't happen too often. Warren sang most of it with a lot of reverb on his vocals, and Oteil took the "so my darling and I make love on the sand" section. This was 25 minutes of the most unexpected, psychedelic stuff I've ever heard from the band.

This feels like a great start and the band seemed happy with the performance. It bodes for a great run. I hope Oteil is staying warm now that he's bald as a cueball, and I can't wait for Tuesday.

Thanks for the review Marley!

Had to pull out Electric Ladyland today. I honestly don't think I've played it for at least 30 years. Can't wait to hear last nights show.

Leave it to an Old Timer to finally post a review . Much thanks Marley and as always; your written word paints a vivid picture. It warms my soul to hear that the ABB rolls on. After last years Wanee performance, I feared that the end of the road had indeed come. Father Time does catch up with everyone in the end! I sure do miss MOOGIS and even more so; miss the banter around the set list every night. Somebody would always post the songs from the venue and we non Beaconites shared great dialogue and laughs nightly. On a side note (but quite related), I sure do miss my friend Bob OBrien (Bobo)

I was all set to complain about being called an old timer, but in the old days I would've posted this at 3 a.m. instead of this afternoon and I woke up with a stiff neck and back and a sore throat from standing out in the cold after the show, so ... old timer it is, I guess.

And I very much know what you mean about Bobo. Going to these shows without Tyler is hard and it's sad. But it's also March in New York City. Where else would I want to be? Where have I had more fun - and where would I? - than the Beacon? So it's an easy choice that way, but the emotions are complicated. We go on and things aren't what they were.

Here's my attempt at the lyrics for Dusk Till Dawn:

A new moon is rising
What happened to the old one?
Did it burn itself out shining night after night
From dusk till dawn?

And now the sky is different
Everything is wrapped up in a brand new glow
Sleeping constellations
Questions without answer
From dusk till dawn

Blood runs through my veins
Like a river, wild and free
Natural it seems
But maybe only to me
To me...

[Harmony lines]

I live my own life
Pushed by the wind, hiding from the Sun
Running who knows where
Who knows where
From dusk till dawn

[Derek solo]

Everybody tells me 'yuou've got to join the human race
Sleep when they sleep, wake when they wake'
But I believe the answers only come
From dusk till dawn

Blood runs through my veins
Like a river towards the seas
Natural it seems
But maybe only to me
To me...

[Slow jam into Warren solo, then back to verse and chorus]

Blood runs through my veins
Like a river towards the seas
Natural it seems
But maybe only to me
To me...

[Derek solo]

As much as I liked Derek's playing on 1983 I could have lived without it.

Best part of last night NO GUESTS :-)
