It was an honor to watch the Allman Brothers rehearse for the 11-show Beacon Theatre run.

Here's a short report:

The Allman Brothers Band started rehearsals a few days ago, and the group has already learned two of Allman’s new tunes. The band has also decided to add seven new covers to their live catalog. In an enthusiastic Facebook post Trucks says, “Wait till you guys hear what’s coming from us this year. 7 new covers, so far, two brand new tunes and we ain’t done yet. Damn, I love this tie of year.”

If that's a confirmed report of new songs, it's very exciting.

2 new songs sounds about right. That is a concrete number, and a plausible one. I was hoping for maybe 3, but that would be optimistic. They weren't going to bust out 10 new songs at the Beacon, and if they did, most people would be mad because that meant they didn't play enough of the hits.

2 new Allman Brothers originals, written at least in part by Gregg Allman, is a lot more than we have gotten in a long time. Let's try to keep some perspective here, folks. If this is true, it's the best news for the band since at least 2009.

Even the 7 covers is a positive sign, because learning that many songs is work, and they haven't played that many never-before-played covers in one run since the Beacon in 2009. At least wait until you find out what songs they are, and how they sound with the ABB playing them, before you decide they suck

For the past several years, we have been getting batches of 2-3 new covers and NO originals. If the ABB actually play 9 songs they've never played before at the Beacon, including 2 new originals, I will be pleasantly surprised.

Here we go again with the setlist criticisms. I'll never understand it for the life of me. If they don't play their hits, they'll get criticized by the fans who want to hear the classics. If they play their hits, they'll get criticized by the fans who are tired of hearing them. Damed if they do, damed if they don't.

7 more covers....I can tell you there are plenty of excited fans out there dying to hear their spin on whatever they are about to play, and I'm one of them. It doesn't matter that they are covers....they will make them original in their own way, like they always have. That's who the Allman Brothers are.

Criticizing that is like going to McDonald's and complaining about the burgers and fries. They've been legendary for over 40 years, and you know how the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it."

The Allmans have always been about their genius instrumentation, not original writing, which they've already proven with their decades of excellent albums and hits. When I hear Whipping Post, I admit I coast through the opening verse, but when that first solo starts, I'm on the edge of my seat because I know it's going to be a completely original solo with a unique energy to it that blows my effing mind. That's the whole point!!!

If you're looking for original music, then I can't understand why you are expecting from the Allmans. Another saying comes to mind....the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Like I said, I can't mention any songs I heard... but I was only there for a few hours of one day out of a week or so of rehearsals... All I can say is, it sounded really good. Gregg is in such a radically different place than he was a year ago it is stunning. Based on what I heard, I can't imagine people feeling let down. Then again, if you expect to hear all of Brothers and Sisters...

Alan, when somebody asked the chances of the ABB playing Brothers and Sisters, I said "Is there anything lower than zero?"

BoytonBrother, I think you let the negative reaction to the covers throw you off track. There ARE apparently new originals. I don't blame anybody who says they will believe it when they hear it, but I kind of believe it.

I believe it too, which is great to hear new songs. My point was that, even if there aren't new songs, it's still a killer show. If they never write another original song for the rest of their careers, it won't matter to me at all. Still the best live show out there.

It's probably greedy - but I hope 6 of those 7 covers are Miles Davis tunes, and Coltrane for the 7th.

I'm with you slothrop However, there are plenty of people, including quite a few on this website, who would complain bitterly about their favorite blues band playing all that jazz nonsense

This is what I was talking about when I said at least wait to find out what covers they are playing before you complain If they come out and play 7 Justin Bieber tunes, I'll be the first to say I'm disappointed. If they play...

My Favorite Things

I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living
Pharoah's Dance
Machine Gun

...then I wouldn't mind one bit

I've Got a Mind to Give Up Living is a good one. I've been saying for years that I'd like to see them go way outside what people expect and play Sing Sing Sing a la Benny Goodman. With a horn section I think that would blow the roof off the place. For Miles covers I'd still pick segment from the Jack Johnson album and if they wanted to add some Coltrane I'd love to hear them try Blue Train.

I have never fussed about song lists, however I do hope the dust off one from the Dan Toler era in honor of Dan...
