Okay, but WHAT makes this the worst music review I've ever read? The fact that The ABB are in the article is incidental, this would have been the worst no matter what band's names came up.

Wow, that did suck mightily. "Yes, Eat a Peach has been a venerated blues classic for 30 years, but you know what's really great? The new Black Keys album. It r0xx0rz."

Except that in order to validate the Bla... no I won't advertise... to validate their choice they first denegrated the very band that showed the way for the band they chose to "review", something they managed to do in one paragraph while taking three to tear down Eat a Peach. Three to one. Looks like the ABB won that one.

Agreed... it's nonsense to review a record and do nothing but complain about it in order to promote another record that originally you weren't writing about. Gotta think the editors didn't know what to do when they saw this thing.

I told them what to do. Just like this:

"Uh-huh. So, the Black Keys album is so uninspired that the "critic" has
to rip one of rock's better albums by one of rock's best groups in order
to have something that appears to be comparative? That piece should
never have made it past his keyboard. That review has AMATEUR pasted all
over it. Please refrain from referring to yourselves as journalists in the future."

I agree completely. But I still think that one is unusual in the degree to which it's badly thought-out. It has no focus, and doesn't seem to shed any light on anything.

this guy is an a$$hole. He has absolutley no clue what he's talking about. That album is one of the best rock albums to ever have graced planet E. it was re-confirmed when i heard that album last night.

My .02.

Open mindedness is the key to music. If you love something you love it.

If you don't love it, how about..........'it's not for me'. It doesn't have to suck. Doesn't have to go to 'My band is better than your band'.

Along the same vein, I think as a group, we revel in "getting it" with the ABB. It wouldn't be the same if they were universally accepted and got alot of airplay.

Actually, I don't see this piece as most of you do. I believe Newt knows what a stellar album Eat a Peach is, and I think he likes it quite a bit, or at least respects it - he knows damn well this is one of the all-time greatest testaments to inspired songwriting, musicianship, creative improvisation, and outright jamming. However, that's not what he's selling right now. What he's selling is this EP by the Black Keys.

He needs an angle, and the angle he chooses to pursue is this > you take this phenomenal classic, which everyone knows is great > strip away the parts that are the most unlike what he's trying to sell > compliment those parts that are the most like what he's trying to sell > and then make his pitch for the new product, which in his view, is comparable to the "best" parts of the acknowledged classic.

Suppose you're not a member of the Peach Corp - you don't know every note of every commercial release, you don't have long discussions about a February, '71 MJ vs. a March, '71 MJ, etc. You're just a music fan that knows, at some level, that the Allman Brothers could really belt out some Blues Classics, infusing them with fresh energy - as with Trouble No More and One Way Out, for instance.

If you like that, you'll like the Black Keys release. That's what this dude is saying. He's flip, irreverant, insulting, yes, but he knows his purpose and he's sticking to it.

Just a theory.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm fuming right now. That really ticked me off. It's amazing, though, as I think "Blue Sky" is one of the 25 greatest rock songs of all time, and this guy things it's one of the worst.

Equally as infuriating is his mention of "Born to Run", another classic.

GRRR!

I'm with TopDroog. I got the same feeling when I read the piece. Just a sneaky way to make something crappy sound good - look at the plug - 4 songs in 10 minutes? Sounds pretty crappy unless it's like the Allman Brothers.

I'm confused, though, becuase this seems like a sales pitch. Is this an advertisement or an album review?

What's the problem, that's how I feel about the album AND the song...

Hey, just kidding!!!

What did get me was the "gratuitous guitar solos" comment. OK.

I greatly prefer Greil Marcus's take on "Eat a Peach" --

"The endless boogie didn't wear out, but it was stopped in its tracks. Following the violent deaths that broke the band, one noticed the reveries, guitarists' bids for peace of mind: the after-the-rain celebrations of 'Blue Sky,' and the ageless, seamless face of 'Little Martha,' front-porch music stolen from the utopia of shared southern memory."
