I posted this in the AG in John's thread. Thought I'd post it here too for those that knew him best.

When I first read of John's passing I was so taken aback. Unlike usual, he had not posted for a number of days. With his compromised immune system, I thought it may well have to do with that. His last post had been about receiving the news that a good friend of his had unexpectedly passed away. He was obviously upset.

Then I read the news.

It didn't seem real. A guy that was so full of life and who tried to be a friend to all. A kind and gentle spirit gone.

John and me had sent a lot of music back and forth through the years. I had found out that his all time favorite guitarist was John McLaughlin. So, without him asking, I had found some really interesting shows with McLaughlin and sent them to John.

He was very generous to have edited some video that I had sent him. An example, the A&E Special with Gregg. John had edited out all the commercials etc so the show was smoother and all about the music.

Then came today. I hadn't really thought about it, but, shortly before John's accident I had sent him some video of Warren's Xmas Jam from 2012. Again, John was going to take out all the "non music stuff" and send it back. As I took the mail from the mailbox today, there was a mailer from John's sister in law.

She had found what I had sent John, including enough double layer dvds for him to make himself a copy. Everything was in the mailer with a very beautiful card, a hummingbird in flight on the cover. It read:

Dear Steve,
With a heavy heart I must tell you that John died in a car accident last Friday. We are reeling from this loss. I found this at his house and wanted to get it back to you. Obviously, you knew John through music. Like a riderless horse at a state funeral, here are the empty tapes that somehow symbolize the music we will no longer hear."
I Wish You Well,
L

To me, the fact that I received them a day short of his service tomorrow was almost like it was unfinished business for John. There were loose ends that needed tied up. For me, the blank discs will always symbolize John's unfinished business here on Earth. And, the discs will forever remain blank. They'll be right where my music system is and will be a reminder, a positive one, that somehow, he saw to it to get them back to me.

Fly on John! Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for bringing so many smiles to my face and so much joy into my heart. Be at peace.

Every time I see a hummingbird, I'll know its you.

Perhaps one day we'll meet again.

Alright car people, why did my alarm go off when I unlocked my car tonight? It also went off when I went to get out and scrape the windshield and again when I got home and opened the door. Very frustrating and the last one probably pissed off the neighborhood. What pisses me off is that I can't turn it off using the button on my key chain
