Obama: Boy Scouts should allow gays

In his pre-Super Bowl interview Sunday, President Obama praised both the Boy Scouts of America and a proposal to end its ban on gays.

"My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life," Obama told Scott Pelley of CBS News.

Obama said, "The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think nobody should be barred from that."

As CBS News reported, the Scouts' national leadership is debating whether to scrap the organization's national ban on gay members and instead allow religious and civic organizations that sponsor separate Scout units to decide how to address the issue.

If the President had a son, he wouldn't feel comfortable with him playing football, but he would feel comfortable with his son going on an overnight trip with a gay scout leader.

I agree with the President. Why would a gay scout leader concern me?

Same as the military , just letting something that has always been there out in the open.
Seems that any trouble caused by this can be dealt with better in the light of day

Some people are afraid of gays because they assume gays are pedophiles. It's a phobia.

as a perfectly heterosexual male and contrary to popular belief, one with his cognitive juices still flowing... it would seem to me that many people, either out of ignorance or stupidity, confuse being gay with being a pedophile. There's quite a difference.

that might be what Obama is saying.

Not so sure about your cognitive juices .... Obama said nothing like that, that was just jpb's usual wrong interpretation..............

This is more about the scout's than scout leaders, although I am sure some scout leaders are gay, and more gays may become scout leaders if they change their policy. jpb made it about scout leaders.

"...exposing them to opportunities and leadership..."

maybe I either missed or mis-read something.

I took from it that it was directed at scout leaders say, 16, 17 years old and not some 9 year old kid.

fair enough. I was never a boy scout. I guess my thought went to an older teen with the "exposing them to opportunities and leadership" comment. I'd think that'd apply more to an older teen than a parent.

In a growing number of states, there could be same sex parents as scout leaders if/when the scouts decide to allow it.

Do heterosexual scout leaders talk about sex around the campfire? Mine didn't. Therefore, I would assume homosexual scout leaders would follow the same path.

Some homosexulas are strong in playing the opposite gender role and that may be confusing to a kid. What somebody does in the bedroom is their business but when you have a man act over efeminate or a female over masculine when it's not really necesray that is where I have an issue. Yeah, I know that not all homosexulas practice that flamboyant behavior. I just feel that it draws attention to something that should remain private in the home.

Exactly... and what I have to say to all those who confuse the two, it's like saying all heterosexuals are rapists.

Some heterosexuals are strong in playing a macho womanizing role that degrades women and that may be confusing to a kid. What somebody does in the bedroom is their business but why have a man act like chauvinist when its not really necessary that is where I have an issue. Yeah, I know not all heterosexuals practice that chauvinistic beahavior, I just feel that it draws attention to something that should remain private in the home.

It really is symptomatic of a deep and troubling homophobia that so many people assume than homosexuals are ravenous predators, ready to pounce on unsuspecting children the second the opportunity presents itself.

Jerry Sandusky is not gay, or at least doesn't claim to be. Did that prevent him from preying on children? Who would you rather have spending time with your children, Sandusky or and upstanding gay citizen?

I know several gay people who would make outstanding Scout leaders. A friend of mine who is an Air Force veteran and currently a meteorologist for CNN springs to mind. So does my former roommate Ginger, with whom I enjoyed many camping trips.

Nothing to be afraid of here, people. They are just Americans like you and me.
