Lots of great drummers already mentioned, but I have to put in a good word for Jeff Sipe of Aquarium Rescue Unit.

The first time I saw ARU, I said "that guy is the best drummer I've ever seen" and I have yet to see anybody change my mind. His combination of technicality and musicality is really something to behold. He has played blues with Susan Tedeschi, bluegrass with Leftover Salmon, Dead music with Phil Lesh, and Col. Bruce's own brand of musical madness, and he excelled in every setting. It's an overused term, but he really can play anything, and do it well.

Bill Bruford is another drummer I have seen in person who comes to mind. Whether with Yes, King Crimson or other projects, he never fails to amaze. His drum solo in Perpetual Change from Yessongs is a classic.

Elvin Jones is one of the greats when it comes to jazz. He was so explosive and powerful and in tune to what Coltrane was doing. Tony Williams is another jazz cat who changed the game as far as jazz drumming is concerned.

For rock drumming, Ginger Baker and Keith Moon are great, but John Bonham sets the bar. Such a heavy sound!

Last but certainly not least, you could fill up a thread with great New Orleans drummers. Zigaboo Modeliste, Russell Batiste, Johnny Vidacovich, Willie Green, Stanton Moore, Terrence Higgins...drumming is like a religion in that city.

One of my favorites who I've been listening to a lot lately is Jim Gordon. To me he had it all. Great sound, chops, and imagination. And as the old cats say, he can swing. I love his work with Derek and the Dominos and Delaney and Bonnie.

But he has also done a ton of session work in the 60s and 70s. Been of quite a number of hits too.

Saw him with Jackson Browne on a tour in 1978. I knew it was him as soon as he started playing.

Would love to find out more about his cymbal set up.
