I don't consider myself a Dickey basher, but until last night I was certainly skeptical of his ability to deliver a top-notch performance. I took advantage of a very last minute chance to see Dickey and the band at Penn's Peak, in Jim Thorpe, PA last night.

I went with only the expectation that I would enjoy myself regardless of the performance, and decided to shoot video for the first time.

For me, the first set was outstanding, and captured much of the Allman Brothers spirit, with dual guitars (or in this case three) playing in beautiful harmony, which for me the current lineup has lost to bombastic back and forth thrashing with the playing of two master/monster guitar heroes.

The second set was good, but at a lower energy and level as the first set.

The band was somewhat inconsistent and sometimes seemed to be plodding though the material where others they soared and killed it.

But there is no question in my mind that Dickey can still bring it. He still carries the soul and the torch of the original lineup, the way no one else does.

I am converted.

Here are some videos that fairly represent what the band has to offer.

sometimes going to a show means all the difference on here.. If someone has a bad experience it becomes the gospel. I have been at shows where the enthusiasm of the band level is low and I do mean the ABB as well.. it was my own experience ,everyone hears things alittle different..
I always felt that DB brings the level of the ABB sound "alive" .. he may be a slower , but so am I running up a flight of stairs..

anyway I am happy you had a good night of music ... and a flash of the ABB sound from the heart strings himself..

I saw Dickey last summer, or maybe two summers ago now, in Bangor ME. He was a stand in for Gregg when he was out due to surgery. I really wanted to enjoy the show but felt Dickey wasn't into it or was under the influence, and the energy didn't translate. In just watching this one clip it seems that his energy has been reclaimed. I love High Falls and wish the ABB would play it live. Much thanks for the videos.

I'm glad to see a thread about this. I'm considering going to see Dickey in Greensboro (beautiful venue btw). I feel obligated to go as the man has one of my first and biggest influences as musician, but some of the negative reviews and videos I've seen have made me not want to go. I feel like the window to see him live is closing so I would really love to go, but if I paid $40+ to see him up close and personal and he gave one of his "off" performances it would probably devastate me. Then again if I don't go and hear that he was on fire I'll feel just as bad as if I went and saw a sub par performance. Please keep the reviews coming

Wow! Dickey sounds pretty decent here. High Falls is especially good. Just goes to show, he's still got the ability to make it happen when he's not impaired. I'd pay to see this show.

Glad to hear the good reviews about Dickey. If he ever comes anywhere close you bet I'll be there.... Dickey's instrumentals were always a highlight on the ABB albums for me..... The man has written some fantastic music.....

Thanks for the videos!!!! Love hearing Dickeys melodic playing. Sweet runs he does on that neck. I am glad he still is out there doing what he does. I do agree about him "carrying the soul and the torch of the original lineup". Thats what is missing from the ABB these days at times....Dickeys feel and touch that he brings to that music..the ABB sound whcih he was a BIG part of innovating.

Nice videos and thanks for the report. I will be at Wild Bill's in April for sure.

Alan - I am happy & pleasantly surprised to read of your Epiphany and not surprised that Dickey is still carrying on the true ABB spirit. I am truly grateful that Dickey is well and hittin' the note. It's really nice to see a good & positive review instead of all the negativity that has been cast about in the past. Thanks for the videos, and I'm very glad you had a good time.

Never doubt the Man in the hat.

When you play improvisational music, sometimes it works and sometimes not so much. That is the risk worth taking.

Who is touring with him now?

Pretty much the same since he was in the ABB, like the Franklin's Tower intro to Blue Sky.

Saw Dicky and Great Southern at Showcase Live ( Foxboro ) few years ago..ripped it up . Liz Reed was incredible, played with son Duane.
Cancelled booking same place last Summer for " personal " reasons. have heard why but can't confirm....
Would travel to see him again.

I went to the Ridgefield show the night before and had the very same feeling you had. I hadn't been to see him in some time because I thought the music was suffering. However, I loved Friday night. I also had front row, so it was great to see the band up close. The crowd was full of energy and I think the band fed off of it. I feel like Duane has gotten much better too. And yes, Pedro is awesome. Andy Aledort can tear it up too.

Dickey definitely won me back. Don't know why I ever doubted him...well I know why.
