Can you picture that imbecile speaking to a gathering of mourners in Newtown?

Thank Heaven we have a President who is compassionate and can string logical thoughts into meaningful sentences.

Your observation is authentically stupid. You may be intelligent, and I'm not evaluating you. But when you go out of your way to say this, you show a vindictiveness that borders on pathological.

You need help more than you need an outlet for your venom.

Bush speaking to the crowd at ground zero. I wasn't a real fan either, but after this...he was my President, if only for a while.

Addressing any group of people - especially the families, after an event like this must be painful and difficult.

I'm neither a huge fan or a detractor of our current president, but watching him speak of this event you could sense not only personal pain, but the awareness that some people might feel that he was trying to politicize the event by means of emoting in maudlin fashion.

I am sure that George W. Bush, where ever he is at the moment, feels a great deal of sincere pain right now, too.

I consider myself neither a liberal or a conservative. I find both of these labels to be extremes - possibly created by the press or radio commentators as a means of creating an "us and them" world.

I am not a gun owner. I've never felt scared enough to need to own one and I have seen first hand - disasterous outcomes of firearms in the hands of idiots. At the same time, I have defended the individual right to bear arms.

I am starting to question the sanity of anybody who chooses to own multiple weapons - especially automatic ones. I can see owning a handgun or two for personal protection (if a person feels a real need), maybe a hunting rifle or two for the outdoorsman.

But I am really starting to question what good an automatic weapon is for anybody who is not in the infantry.

Your sentiment is echoed in the reality that fully automatic weapons have been banned since 1986.

Weapons built and owned before this date are grandfathered. However, they must be registered with the ATF and owners must pay extra and subject themselves to all sorts of ATF checks. The weapons themselves are prohibitively expensive due to their very limited availability.

No one's using full auto weapons at these random shootings. However, restricting magazine capacity on semi-auto guns is something that almost surely will be sought by gun ban activists.

I'm pro 2nd Amendment and pro-gun, but I'd like to see much harsher penalties for any sort of crime committed where the perp has a firearm with them, whether it's used or not. As to what to do for those who have access to guns and are not mentally stable, I don't know what the answer is if otherwise sane people don't restrict their access. Disarming America may one day come about, but I can't imagine it any time soon.

In Georgia there is a 7 year term for using a firearm in a crime, served separately from the crime sentence.
Of course like many laws that make sense, it's rarely enforced.

Everyone know how I didn't like Bush as President but in this case I must concur. No place for politics when dealing with a tragedy like this. I think any President would do their absolute best under such circumstances to try to help the victims families in any way possible. Certainly not a time to bash Bush, Obama or any other President IMO.

Semi-automatic guns with high capacity ammo clips have no place belonging to anyone who isn't military or police. To be able to waste people at the rate of how many times you can pull the trigger leads to mass casualties before anyone can react and stop the murderer.

Browsing through the WP I see you found the need to make your 'stupid American' comment in multiple threads. Just out of curiousity ... what is your nationality?

Thanks for setting me straight. Again, I'm just not a gun person, so I don't understand all these things.

One of my nieces and her family visited me over the weekend. Her husband is a big gun fanatic. He's one of those - "take my guns from my dead hands" types. His big concern is being safe in public.

I don't understand exactly what he's afraid of. He's a former footballer - big, BIG arms - athletic. I'm sure he could hold his own with most anybody. I told him that he'd be one of the last people that anybody would mess with - just based on his outward appearance.

I don't think he'd ever turn into one of these workplace/school shooters or anything. On the other hand, somebody like this might needlessly turn a minor confrontation into a "justified" shooting rather than just walking away. He's one of the type who confuse aggressive panhandling with attempted robbery.

I just don't understand why so many people feel so afraid to the point where thy feel the need to arm themselves so heavily.

I totally agree. And I resent being called a 'stupid American' because I think a line should be drawn as to what kind of guns belong in the hands of the people. No one is coming to take your guns, no one, to my knowledge, has ever come to take anyone's guns and as far as I can tell, no one needs assault rifles for anything other than killing people. We have enough guns in this country to defend ourselves. Wake up fear mongers and realize how you're being used by the gun lobby for profits.

That's why they aren't for sale to the general public, unless you have a FFL3.

As far as just for killing people, they're a hoot to shoot just aiming at an old car.

I think he has feelings just like anyone else does. Are there other politicians who were better orators than him,? Yes; but that does not mean he was an idiot as the thread suggested.
