Carter slams Georgia's 'evolution' proposal

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Friday he was embarrassed by the Georgia Department of Education proposal to eliminate the word "evolution" from the state's curriculum.

"As a Christian, a trained engineer and scientist, and a professor at Emory University, I am embarrassed by Superintendent Kathy Cox's attempt to censor and distort the education of Georgia's students," Carter said in a written statement.

Cox explained the reasoning at a news conference on Thursday and in a statement posted on the Department of Education Web site, saying that the concepts of evolution would remain in the curriculum.

"The unfortunate truth is that 'evolution' has become a controversial buzzword that could prevent some from reading the proposed biology curriculum," Cox said in her statement.

She added: "We don't want the public or our students to get stuck on a word when the curriculum actually includes the most widely accepted theories for biology. Ironically, people have become upset about the exclusion of the word again, without having read the document."

But Carter said dropping the word would leave Georgia's high school graduates "with a serious handicap as they enter college or private life where freedom of speech will be permitted."

Carter also predicted ridicule for the state, along with discredit on Georgia's university system.

"The existing and long-standing use of the word 'evolution' in our state's textbooks has not adversely affected Georgians' belief in the omnipotence of God as creator of the universe," Carter said. "There can be no incompatibility between Christian faith and proven facts concerning geology, biology, and astronomy.

"There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat Earth in order to defend our religious faith."

A'Men Jimmy, A'Men.

You seriously have to wonder what the hell goes on in the heads of some people...

What's next? Banning Ben Gay ointment?

Don't say it too loud, Frank, somebody'll take you up on it.

Come on, Georgia, we KNOW you can do better than this.

I admire Jimmy Carter for many reasons.

The Carter Project, Habitat for humanity, etc ...

Most of all he shows how to be a man of faith.
Believing in the truth of his convictions and is not afraid to follow them or to speak
up for his beliefs.

God Bless Jimmy

Peace
John

Please keep in mind. This is the state that gave us Bebe.

Good point. Must be hard to support evolution with that walking around town.

This is also the state that gave us the Allman Brothers Band.

Georgia's Secretary of State is a hugely popular politician ... and her name is Cathy Cox. Many local pundits have speculated that the unknown Kathy Cox was elected as State School Superintendant last year largely because of the similarity of names.

She is an embarassment. Jimmy Carter is a hero, a genuine great American. I love him.

What's funny is that she wants to ban the word "evolution", yet says nothing of banning the the phrase "El Largo Titicaca"...

That's the problem with electing teachers.

We have some of the lowest SAT scores in the country down here in GA. This should do a lot to enhance that stellar distinction.

This is the main problem with the "religious right".

I consider myself a very devout Christian, as does my wife, but since when is it blasphemy to admit that while God may have created the universe, he also may have done it 13 billion years ago and it may be just one of infinite universes in multiple dimensions, and he may only have set things in motion and then stepped back and let EVOLUTION take over.

I will never get why those who profess such faith have so little faith in the ability of God to be much more complex than the literal reading of the Bible may allow.

God Bless Jimmy Carter - what a great, great man.

Cox certainly doesn't speak for most of the Georgians I know.

At times I get upset with the rest of the US (and especially Hollywood) accepting and perpetuating the demeaning stereotypical "Southerner." Now we go and shoot ourselves in the foot by having an elected official commit this monumental boffo! I suspect she will not be re-elected.

One of the many reasons I have always admired the Allman Brothers Band is that they were unapologetic about being Southern and made me even prouder to be from the South.

I'm sure Georgia doesn't have a lock on dumb politicians. We had the ABB and Lester Maddox at the same time. Thank God for Jimmy Carter! My great Aunt and Miss Lillian (JC's mother) went to all of the grades in school together. Heard a few stories growing up...good man and fellow Georgia Tech grad.

Growing up I spent 9 months of the year in Georgia attending public school. Each Summer, my sister and I, went and stayed with relatives in New York. I've always had a hard time answering the question, "Where are you from?". I'm not a product of Georgia or New York. Now I wonder if I just dodged the question because of embarassment.

Any who wish to sign an online petition protesting the stupidity of this ruling by Kathy (with a "K") Cox -- a Republican, of course -- here's the scoop:

Earlier this month the Georgia Department of Education released drafts of the future science standards for K-12 education ( www.georgiascience.org.). The GADOE has intentionally weakened American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) standards by removing any mention of evolution, common descent, the big bang, or the true age of the earth. This antagonism towards good science is now threatening the future of Georgia's students and Georgia's economy. Reed Cartwright from UGA has started an online petition to GADOE. If you would like to sign a petition to encourage GADOE to use all of the AAAS benchmarks, you can do so at http://www.petitiononline.com/gasci04/petition.html

Thanks for your help.
