The news in my paper this morning said, "....forecasts show Western Massachusetts should be spared the brunt of the storm..." Hopefully, that's true. After the events of 2011 (a tornado, a microburst, Hurricane Irene and the powerful October 2011 snowstorm) we (in Western Mass) don't need it.

It is bad Dave, luckily we are not in a shore town, we are far enough in land and far enough away from the lakes in our area.
But having said that, friends of ours in the town where our kids go to school are getting hammered, with another 4 ft of tidal surge coming at high tide.

Sandy comes to New Jersey. So Springsteenesque!

Seriously, y'all take care. Leave if you can - hunker down if you can't.
Be sure to gas up your cars. Charge up BBQ tanks and buy charcoal, bottled water and ice. Some of y'all are likely to lose power for days.

Check in on any seniors and shut-ins in your area!

Just read that the HMS Bounty, a sailing ship that was featured in the motion pictures Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), sank due to Hurricane Sandy earlier today.

We lost power a few hours ago but we are safe and out of harms way . No water issues
Now we just have to wait out the power company .

Wow, this is really turning into the worst case scenario for Jersey and New York.

13.88 feet of water in Battery Park, more than 2 feet above the old record--which was set in 1821! All power is apparently out below 39th street, which is a good chunk of Manhattan. The subways and tunnels are flooded and it could be a while before mass transit is back up. I don't think NYC has ever seen anything like this.

Some reporter from CNN is in the middle of downtown Atlantic City and there are whitecaps all around him. He is nearly a mile from shore and there is not just water in the street, but WAVES. Asbury Park and other seaside communities in Jersey are also flooded pretty badly. Massive devastation along the Jersey shore.

My heart goes out to those who live in that area or who have loved ones there. This storm is going to leave a mark.

Crazy storm in western Maryland/West Virginia. Started out with heavy rain, now snowing, thunder and lightning. Blizzard conditions in some areas. The winds haven't been too bad as predicted by me, along the ridges at higher elevation 2000 + it's howling. A friend has 9 inches of snow already and still coming down and numerous downed power lines. I still have power, that is a blessing. Hearing of some flooding in low lying areas.

Stay safe to all in the path. Suppose to be hammered another 24 hours, got tomorrow off, so will access the damage around the property.

Here in Northern Queens we were largely spared any damage but NYC has been devastated, particularly lower Manhattan. School will be closed tomorrow for the third straight day.

Made it through ok, nothing too bad, up in the mountains it is still snowing, a friend of mine says he has 28 inches in his yard and still coming donw, setting records for snowfall this early. Hate to think when it all starts to melt, will create flooding.

My sister in Chicago said they are getting some of the winds from this storm. Stay safe everyone.

I am in Westchester county NY about 35 miles northwest of NYC. No power, but all in all, no real tree damage to the yard at all. The wind was ferocious. My sister in CT had a tree destroy her new car and her husbands F150 truck. I hope everyone else is ok.

Checking in from NYC. I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (close by The Beacon Theater). This part of Manhattan was spared the destruction seen in other parts of the city. A few downed trees along Broadway and lots of damaged trees in Central Park. Subways are still not running, but some bus service has been restored and the bridges are re-opening. Mayor Bloomberg says that the ING NYC Marathon will go on as planned this Sunday. I'll be surprised if that happens. Running the marathon is not high on my list of ways to get this city back on its feet.

In the inland CT suburbs, we did OK, certainly not as bad as last year's one-two punch of the hurricane Irene and then the October ice storm.

We are on generator power, and boy, those things are worth their weight in gold. Being without power makes you realize how much you rely on being "on the grid" and in general how very accustomed we are to a certain routine.

The CT coast got hit very hard, as with NJ and NY. Unbelieveable sights on the news.

Just north of Boston, we were relatively spared this time.
The pictures / events of lower Manhatten, Breezy Pt, and coastal NJ are numbing - I grew up on LI and lived a few years in Brooklyn so part of me is still there, as well as some family.
My heart goes out to everyone involved.

Watching those unbelievable aerial pictures of the disaster zone and reading about the death toll and the devastation it's absolutely horrendous that they still want the NYC marathon to take place. Using manpower and generators to pull off a sport event while across the same city they are still looking for corpses in the rubble.
