not sure.

I do know a few welfare recipients that tell the government they had 300 dollars worth of food in their fridges that went bad because the power went out...and they get "reimbursed".

go figure. There isn't a welfare recipient on the planet that has 300 dollars worth of food in their fridge, should the power go out Monday, two days BEFORE check day.

On a serious note, some studies on Global warming studies and models, reveal that they have been too conservative in the effects of Man made warming.
And that some of the feedback effects like
the rapid melting of arctic ice were underestimated.

The Arctic ice melted more rapidly and more completely than any model estimated.

Yet this is not even an issue the corporate owned political parties even want to discuss in their platforms. Why not.

I guess the extinction of the human species is not as important as who gets married to whom.

And the predictions of bigger more violent storms?

I guess that was just Al Gore inventing another innnernets

To all of you in Sandy's path, prepare and take care, and when she's passes through, make sure you drop on back here and let us all know that you and yours are OK. Thoughts and prayers go out to all in Sandy's path.

I appear to be in the path here in NYC. Being on relatively high ground I am not overly concerned about flooding. I am more concerned about falling tree branches. My power lines are underground so I am cautiously optimistic about not losing power. Just in case I have my flashlights ready and several gallons of water.

Maybe the most mean spirited post I've seen on HTW. What, about this thread would put that thought in your head? Hoping you have the good fortune never to end up on welfare!

ya know, i've thought about it and i suppose what i started this thread about wasn't really fair. even though i don't like trump and all the dumb things he's said, i shouldn't make light of a dangerous situation like this.

alot of people will be affected and not just on the coasts. please everyone be safe and be prepared for the worst. better to be prepared than not. good luck.

Never thought it was headed for Monkey Hill, but we have flood and high winds warnings
Mon to Tues. Could still be a tropical storm at this point. My car was flooded by a 18 wheeler on 495 last time I drove during a tropical storm. Had to be somewhere.

Time to batten down the hatches , put lawn furniture inside and in sheds.

We are a couple of miles inland from the coast, so I'm sure we're gonna get a good blast of wind and rain.

I have my pumps ready to go.

BIG sycamore trees line our town, if any of those babies come down, thats gonna be big trouble.

The storm surge has taken out the Pier in Ocean City MD. The inlet area has been evacuated. Uptown nearer to Delaware, folks are riding it out. Very dangerous.

mean spirited? How so? I deal with welfare recipients on a daily basis. Some really do need and appreciate help the government gives them and for one reason or another, they were put in a tough spot. The days leading up to Sandy, I heard from many, many recipients that they were going to do just that: tell the government that 300 dollars worth of food spoiled in the refrigerators. That's not mean spirited at all (btw, if that's the most mean spirited post you've seen here, you haven't looked around much) just calling it for what it is. The author's original post was about Sandy and whether Trump would take a bailout and my post is in direct corelation to that, on a much lesser scale. I see welfare fraud EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY LIFE and Sandy is just another excuse for those who abuse the system and has a lot to do with Sandy and bailouts, right in line with the first post of this thread.

sorry you were offended but it is what it is. and me "having the 'good fortune' to never be on welfare" has nothing to do with "good fortune". You make it sound like me working my butt off to provide for me and mine is "good fortune" while some will never have the desire to lift a finger to better themselves. Your post probably offends me more than mine did you.

I've never been accused of a mean spirited post on this site in all the years I've been here, though I've had my beefs with a few people here. That's not who I am or what I am. In my line of work, there is a direct relationship between what I do and what the author of this thread asked.

I shop. 300 dollars can go a long long way eating Ramen noodles. Not so much eating Porterhouse steaks and lobsters. Besides, it depends on who's buyin'.

Wow. Just wow. Your last couple of posts are shocking to me, and I don't exactly live under a rock either. Mean spirited is right.

Yes, there is fraud. I am not too sure how much fraud will be done because in Katrina, for the poorer clasess, money was thrown out therre. It was a first of such devastion over several states and it was so costly.
Now,there, everyone must have flood insurance. There will be no more govt. help with that.
Before, many people left flood ins. as if it was an option. Now, flood insurance is doubled, tripled in cost and that is even for those who did not flood.
People in NYC, surrounding cities and fellow state will have to now pay for flood insurance.

Food stamps, those who recieved it before Kartina, did so after and did not miss a beat. Those who had to apply and it was new to them, I should know, recieved emergency relief and it was only for so long (three months) and there were several people ( about 10 of us) on the same address for those three months.

I feel very sorry for those in the NE.
Poor will bounce back. they neither lose nor gain. Rich, wealthy, they had ins., can play the game and will be ok. Even if they took some rela loses, they can bounce back.
Middle-class, get ready to get taxed some more.
They will bounce back. They should take what aid is offered. Don't be too proud. They paid for it. That is how I loooked at it.
It will just takes time and sweat, tax, meds :-), a lot for them to rebuild and they will.
