Even if you don't agree, it's still way near the top of the list, IMHO.

Danny invented his own musical universe.... he was amazing beyond the meaning of the word... maybe jack pearson could visit his guitar universe.... i don't know if anyone else could...

and in Jimi's musical universe there's "Hear My Train" from "In The West" I think it's 4/26/69, the "Smash Hits" studio version of "Red House". It certainly is an interesting musical universe...

He seems to cut accross style effortlessly. going from Jazz to blues to rockabilly without making it sem contrived or artificial.

You can hear why Joe Bonamassa credits him as a major influence.

That man was in a class ALL his own. Saw him many ,many times and he set the bar at an unattainable height. Made me wand to sell all my guitars. I miss Danny Gatton.

He toured for a while with Robert Gordon, a rockabilly cat that not many people are familiar with. Probably his best know tune was "My Girl Is Red Hot! Your Girl Ain't Doodly Squat!"

Saw Danny once at the Cubby Bear in Chicago in the early '90s with Robben Ford opening (how's that for a double bill?). I had been aware of Danny for a while and was really looking forward to seeing to seeing him - this is right around his major label debut 88 Elmira Street but I had been into him before that. He did this thing with a bottle of beer where he dumped the contents of the beer out onto the neck of his guitar and then proceeded to use the bottle to play slide with. Absolutely incredible. Unfortunately he was the definition of the tortured artist and like Roy Buchanan, whom he frequently played with in DC and was often compared to, he took his own life in his barn with a rifle.

There's a GREAT book about him called Unfinished Business which was also the name of one of his best records, truly a heartbreaking story:

http://www.amazon.com/Unfinished-Business-Times-Danny-Gatton/dp/087930748X/ ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1349821689&sr=1-1&keywords=D anny+Gatton

If you haven't checked him out yet, you need to. One of the greatest, and some say THE greatest, there ever was.

There is a great local guitarist here in Atlanta named Barry Richman who told me this story about Danny Gatton once.

Barry is playing a local club and a young lady comes up to him after the show and tells him how much she enjoyed it. While they are talking, she mentions that her father was a guitarist, and somebody once told her he was the greatest guitarist who ever lived.

Barry sort of rolls his eyes at this, as I'm sure you can imagine, but he politely asks her who her father was.

"Danny Gatton," she says.

After a long pause, Barry says "Whoever told you that was right."

I forgot to mention that Lowell George wanted Danny to join Little Feat, but he ODed before he got around to it.

Also, watch Danny's right hand -- he used all his fingers to great advantage.

For anyone interested, there was a vine quite some time ago started by my dear friend les_paul_sunburst. If I'm lucky, I can find my copies of this vine and will re-seed if whoever last had the vine doesn't respond. See the vine below
