If I said I was in shock, it would be a HUGE understatement. And the Mike Love saga continues..............

Very bizarre, but the Twitter comments are hysterical.

Frees Wilson up to do his own thing anyway. People are still raving about his show here last year.

Mike Love + Stamos = The Beach Boys. That is pretty funny.

Before the tour was formally announced Brian was asked if he would play. Said he didn't want to but they were going to throw so much money at him that he really couldn't refuse.

Can't say I'm surprised by this at all. Mike Love lives on another planet and they all hate each other anyway.

Love the "Beethoven got fired by one of his piano pedals" comment

Not surprised at all, really. The 50th reunion tour was barely underway when Love starting booking "The Beach Boys" shows in South America without Brian Wilson for after the 50th tour concluded. There was an article, I believe posted here, many many weeks back about that.

Wilson, Marks, and Jardine should go out together using their own names sort of like how ABWH did in the late 80s when Chris Squire owned the "Yes" name/brand. Probably do better than the Mike Love "Beach Boys".

Is this tour selling well? If not I suspect this is a publicity stunt....

Mike love is an a$$hole. he and the others would be used car salesman or janitors if it werent for Brian Wilson.

I've never understood how there could be a Beach Boys without Brian Wilson.
The "Beach Boys" (quotes indicate this an ersatz version of the BB's) firing him would be like Microsoft firing Bill Gates.

Coincidentally, I just read this review from The (London) Times:

Itís more than 30 years since the Beach Boys played in the UK with their creative totem, Brian Wilson. Three decades in which their solar-powered vitality dimmed, two founding members ó Brianís brothers Dennis and Carl ó died and the others faced off in courtrooms and indulged in generally unsatisfying spin-off projects.

Without Brian Wilson, whose genius was hampered by mental problems, those incarnations had the feel of slick tribute acts. Even Wilsonís solo return, though well received, has had an air of incompleteness about it.

Now, Wilson has led a long-mooted rapprochement, joining the other surviving founders Mike Love and Al Jardine, stalwart member Bruce Johnston and David Marks, who played guitar with the band at 13, for their first full tour since 1965. Their new album, Thatís Why God Made the Radio, contains some of the finest songs Wilson has written since he and the band last played here in 1980.

Thatís not to say that all is now sunshine and rainbows. Reports suggest that Wilson has approached some of the reunion gigs with all the joy of a man facing root canal surgery, and he was a still, sad figure at the start of this historic show, recorded for Radio 2, tucked behind his white piano while the more gregarious Love and Johnston milked the applause.

When Wilson sang unaccompanied on God Only Knows he sounded spindly, but gradually his presence filled the room and seemed to inspire his once estranged colleagues. The earlier songs worked better, perhaps because they recalled a time when the Beach Boys were a collective, rather than flying in Wilsonís slipstream. Surfer Girl and I Get Around were tackled with tightly marshalled gusto and there was even a cover of the soda-fountain standard Why Do Fools Fall in Love?. That song was recorded by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers but Brian Wilson and the Geriatrics made a joyous fist of it.

All bar Marks are over 70 now and so you could forgive an occasional lack of bounce. Though Jardineís voice was in fine fettle, Loveís was drowned out by the theramin on Good Vibrations and Jeff Foskett, a regular collaborator of Wilsonís, did the heavy lifting when it came to the high notes of Kokomo and Wouldnít It Be Nice. Youthful vim, meanwhile, was provided by a nine-piece backing band, none of whom were born when the Beach Boys cut their first song.

But after 50 years in the business, thereís no shame in conserving oneís energy, and when that famous phalanx of harmonies was unleashed, as it was on a transcendent Heroes and Villains and a stately California Girls, the results were spine-tingling. At the end even Wilson was grinning and flashing OK signs to the crowd. It was much better than OK, Brian.

Can't America fire the Beach Boys... they should have been fired when they wanted to be the last act at The Filmore closing.

I like the BB's music but they've sounded terrible for the last 30 years. Hang it up boys.

Somehow Mike Love ended up the the legal rights to the name. Total BS.

Funny thing is, "Mike Love and Friends" will continue to play small halls and auditorioms.

Meanwhile Brian sells out Radio City, Beacon, etc.

Once an assclown, always an assclown.

totally false. marks, jardine and wilson were hired for a certain amount of time and it was in their contracts the start and end date of the tour. love already stated he would return to the pre 50th anniversary lineup in the fall and also that wilson, love and marks would return in the future for more touring and possibly new music.

i agree with both of those statements but love was very upfront about the 50th anniversary tour. the dates were booked and advertised as the 50th anniversary tour with wilson, love, marks, johnston and jardin. a few months after the tour had started and had a set end date love booked some gigs with the lineup of the beach boys that has been touring non stop for about the last decade

Just watched a couple of songs from the tour. Had to laugh at the guitar army. half a dozen guitars on stage and I can't hear any of them. Too funny.

Even with all the old members added, it still sounds like a band at some county fair to me. They were struggling when I saw them the last time which was about 25 years ago.

Brian is better off without them. The band that he played with on his last solo tour was much better and the vocals were too.

i agree about being better off without them.

funny that one site had this same article but the headline was "BRIAN WILSON FIRED IN THE MIDDLE OF REUNION TOUR". the article then stated there were only 2 dates left so if it was the middle i guess by the articles math the tour was only 4 shows

From the link about the Beach Boys situation...

quote:
The Boys have had their share of spats, drama, and addiction since forming half a century ago, but fans are shocked at the blatant disregard for sheer history and loyalty as founding members are forced out of their own show.

Gee..that really sounds familiar. Its like I have heard it before. Gosh, I just cant put my finger on it. A few years back...lots of animosity...bad feelings, etc....hmmm. who could that be?..........

Just a quick thumbs up for Jeff. He's the real deal. At the "Smile" show I saw he had food poisoning, literally puking offstage between numbers.

Great player, awesome vocalist, band leader. Keeps Brian in the game.
