Anyone in the NY area going to the Global Awareness Festival in Central Park this Saturday? Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Fool Fighters, Butch's favorite band, the Black Keys and one of my personal favorite's, Band of Horses?

Yep.

Starts at 5pm,

K'naan the rapper is doing 10 minutes, Band of Horses 20 minutes, and the other 3 acts will get 50 minutes a piece.

Scheduled to end at 9 pm......

It'll be broadcast live on Palladia, and streamed on the web at mtv.com, vh1.com, and AXS.
Web broadcasts will be replayed at midnight (EST) and 8 am (EST) the next day.

I am planning on going to the show on Saturday. Where did you find info about show? I checked the Global web site.....not alot of info there. Will there be beer sales on the grounds? What is the restroom situation like?

Thanks, Tom

Won 2 sets of tickets to the show. Looking forward to Neil Young. Not sure if they will be selling beer or not. Count on Porta Potty or porta Johns as the only bathroom option. Tickets say no alcohol, no glass, etc, the normals no-nos for an outdoor fest. No backpacks, no large blankets only standard beach towels, water bottles~no bigger than 32 oz. empty only. You have to enter Central Park from either 72nd Street & Fifth Ave. or 72nd Street & Central Park West, Tickets are clearly marked "East Gate" or "West Gate". All entrances to the park above 72nd street will probably be closed (NYPD and barricades) as far north as 96th Street for most of the day on Saturday. Don't think you will be able to get anywhere near the Great Lawn without a ticket.

Thank you. Farm Aid was terrible, so this ought to give more music.

This Central Patk web site gives some info and a few helpful links. One of the links is for tickets.
http://www.centralpark.com/events/show/1382/global-festival?utm_source=Cent ralPark.com+Email+Lists&utm_campaign=RSS_DRIVEN_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium =email

Sorry to say that the link for free tickets is no longer working

Maybe I'm a bit biased because they're the band I'm most looking forward to seeing, but Band of Horses just released an album last week and they're only getting 20 minutes?

Ummm, no maybe about it, I think you are being a bit biased here, lol.....

You know what the deal is on things like this, the bands with stature/popularity get put on the top of the bill, and it works its way on down the pecking order.

If they were doing it by release dates of albums, then NY and Crazy Horse, having released their last set in 1996, would be in the 10 minute spot, K'naan, now has. I don't think thats going to float.

I dig the BoH as well, but they're in the right spot for who's on the bill.
Though I will say, I too, am a bit disappointed in the length of time for the sets on this event.
But it is free, for a cause, so, its really hard to be griping about much....other than the length of time the artists are playing.

Oh, I'm not arguing their location on the bill because like you said, they're in the right spot. But also like you said, the length of the sets are odd. Is there really a 9pm curfew in Central Park?

It sounds about right, though I do remember Dave Matthews played a show there a few years back at night. But I do remember a lot of the shows before that in the 80's being performed in broad daylight (Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, Diana Ross, etc) in Central Park.

So to answer your question, I'm assuming there is, unless your able to get a waiver from the Parks & Rec folks running Central Park, and I'd imagine getting one of those is a few bucks.

There is no 9pm curfew in Central Park. When the NY Philharmonic plays in the park, they play much later than 9pm and after the show there is a fireworks display. The Central Park website states that the Global Festival is from 5pm - 10pm. During the summer Shakespeare in the Park runs past 11pm. The park officially closes at 1am. By that time, the only living beings in Central Park are the cops and the rats.

You going up for this, Brock? Very cool! Looks to be a wonderful night of music and it is wonderful to see these bands step up for a good cause and encourage others to do so, also.
