Duane is going up against SRV today on GuitarWorld.com's poll of greatest guitarist. Normally wouldn't post this, but he was getting beat pretty badly (58-9, but it's still early) when I voted just now so thought maybe posting here would get him a few votes.

I think both....are the absolute best....at what they did.
Two different animals, same results. Greatness.

I agree, love them both, but when forced to choose I voted for Duane and was kind of surprised (although going by some of the other outcomes from this poll I wasn't overly surprised) that it was that lopsided already.

Man, it's like 81% in favor of SRV. SRV is my 2nd favorite guitarist after Duane, but I would hope Duane would be much closer than THAT!

Just voted for Duane, but is it really a fair match-up?.....Ask the regular dude on the street which guitarist is "Better" and he's likely to say, "Duane who"?...

I always take this stuff with a grain of salt.

Most people voting today don't remember Duane Allman from his live performances so I understand the disparity, however, it took Duane for there to be a Stevie Ray in my opinion.

You hit the nail on the head bigann, I hate lists/polls all they are designed to do is sell.

Stevie Ray was great, glad I got to see him live, but I'm going to vote for Duane without even thinking hard.

"it took Duane for there to be a Stevie Ray in my opinion."

bigann, I know exactly what you mean, but in this case I think it's more accurate to say there wouldn't have been a Stevie Ray Vaughan without Jimi Hendrix.

I'm sure Stevie was influenced by the Allmans, any blues-rock guitarist has to be, but he didn't wear that influence on his sleeve the way he did with his obvious love and respect for Jimi. As far as I know he never played any ABB tunes, but he played at least 4-5 Hendrix tunes, and his versions of Voodoo Child and Little Wing are widely considered some of his best work.

That's part of what I love about SRV--anybody who loves Hendrix that much has immaculate taste However, it also moves Stevie down a half-notch on my list compared to Duane or Jimi, because he walked very much in the shadow of Hendrix and the great blues masters and wasn't as revolutionary or original.

I just went and voted, and this was one of the criteria...

"Creativity: Who pioneered new techniques? Who sounds the most radically different from what came before them?"

That's why Duane and Jimi both beat SRV.

SRV was a great guitar player, no question

but, this should be no competition.

evidence - Dreams, Liz Reed, Mountain Jam, not to mention the slide work.

I voted for Stevie.

Polls like this suck, it's not a competition.

Damm!t Ron! You didn't have to tell us. ( I said that in my Dr McCoy voice from Star Trek)

It is a competition actually and it doesn't matter if it's apples & oranges. They started with 132 players in a bracketed play and it's down to 8. Could have just as easily been Duane against Zak Wylde (wish it had been). Of course these things don't matter nor do they mean anything. It's just more fun for me if Duane wins!

Isn't that all that really matters?

When I think of Rock or Blues/Rock guitarists, Stevie Ray Vaughan certainly makes my list of favorites. But my three all-time favorites are Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Duane Allman. Their best work is breathtaking and has that magical quality that defies description.

When Duane suddenly gets 1400 quick votes and then loses by 1, we know who to go looking for.

Just noticed that in the poll Duane beat Warren and then he beat Dickey. At least they get taken out by their own.

The way they set it up was kind of clever actually, they paired up the first few rounds by putting guitarists with similar styles against each other. Made me mad at first, but it makes sense to sort of break it up into genres and have one winner come out of a genre bracket to then face off against another.

Yeah the system makes sense although it guarentees that you can't have the two top being from the same brackets. It wouldn't matter anyway as the names would be the same anyway.

Will be Jimi vs Jimmy on one side.
EVH vs Dimebag on the other side.

The only suprise could be from the 4th bracket with Dimebag vs Lifeson with the winner going against Iommi. From the mindset of internet users and those that buy GuitarWorld, I think Dimebag gets more votes. The others are obvious. Three of those 4 sell the most magazines when on the cover. Dimebag also gets great sales.

In the sales world of magazines a perfect combo is Jimi vs EVH.

I can't articulate well as to why I feel this is an apples to oranges comparison, but I'll start with the guitar tone...and then note that Duane utilized the slide a tad more. Really, I need to be in two different moods to want to listen to either one of them. I'll give the nod to Duane, as (to my ears) SRV seemed to always have a run or two he utilized heavily. Possibly too heavily. And Duane's playing (to me) seemed more colorful or something. Respected the space between notes a tad more. SRV was a shredder at times....the blur of notes seemed to detract from the overall statement he was making. To me, anyways. Though I can completely respect the talent that man possessed in his fingers. If Duane tried to jam with Double Trouble, I'm not sure he could pull it off as well as SRV did. And if SRV jammed with the Brothers, I'm not sure I'd completely like that product, either. Just my opinion.

Can't do the vote, 'cause they're both my favorite players. I'd feel guilty either way I went!
I see the SRV clip is from the old '80's show Night Music, hosted by David Sanborn. I watched that show every Friday night I think it was. Very eclectic.
I remember the bass player broke a string at the end of Crossfire that night.
They were cookin'!!!
