Any lyrics that have baffled you your entire life ?

T. Rex, Bang a Gong: Someone please explain to me just exactly what is a "hubcap diamond star halo"

Donovan , Then There is a Mountain: "The lock upon my garden gate's a snail, that's what it is."

Here's a real winner, Styx, Crystal Ball: "I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me
Or am I even in it's mind at all" I just can't get my brain around that line.

Zep of course tops the bill with words that we never bothered to understand,
for example, from What is and What Should Never Be:

"Oh the wind wont blow and we really shouldn't go and it only goes to show, a whoa whoa whoa.
Catch the wind, we're gonna see it spin, we're gonna...sail, little girl
do do do, bop bop a do-oh, my my my my my my yeah.
Everybody I know seems to know me well
but they're never gonna know that I move like hell. "

Oh and When The Levee Breaks, Zep version: "Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, Got what it takes to make a Mountain Man leave his home" Mountain man ? What ?

I like this line from Led Zepp's "Dancing Days":

"I saw a lion, he was standing alone with a tadpole in a jar."

I once spent hours learning "Yours Is No Disgrace" on the bass. This always baffled me in the meantime:

Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are
Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are

I always thought he was singing "purple bullfrogs" LOL

Then:

Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human race
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place

Caesar's palace? WTF?

Genesis lyrics to 'Abacab'

When they did the 2007 reunion tour, Phil wouldn't sing it because he had no idea
what the song was about

I'm pretty sure this was written under the influence of something, but still an amazing visual lyric....love the line "The tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers".

And you see a girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind

The tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter

Some lyrics don't really have to make sense...

Look for awhile at the China Cat Sunflower
proud-walking jingle in the midnight sun
Copper-dome Bodhi drip a silver kimono
like a crazy-quilt stargown
through a dream night wind

Krazy Kat peeking through a lace bandana
like a one-eyed Cheshire
like a diamond-eye Jack
A leaf of all colors plays
a golden string fiddle
to a double-e waterfall over my back

Comic book colors on a violin river
crying Leonardo words
from out a silk trombone
I rang a silent bell
beneath a shower of pearls
in the eagle wing palace
of the Queen Chinee

Well, I have to admit they all made a lot of sense at one time. Only trouble was, at that time I wasn't making much sense.

China Cat Sunflower, oddly enough, has always made perfect sense to me. Except when they are slightly off on the intro, that makes it all fall apart.

quote:
Battleships confide in me
that's the lyric ? Made more sense how I always heard it: "Battleships come piling at me..." which, by the way, made for a killer visual.

So those are the lyrics to China Cat Sunflower... all these years and I wasn't even the ball park... maybe that's a good thing!

Man I bet that was fun to play on bass.
Didn't they run the bass thru a moog on the original?
A lot of Yes's lyrics don't make sense on the surface. It would be fun to hear Jon Anderson explain some of them. I heard him talking about Roundabout one time, "In and around the lake, mountains come out of the sky and stand there" referred to the reflection of the mountains in the lake. I bet they all have some meaning, if decifered.

The Donovan song, as most know, refers to a caterpiller crawling along, making a hump, flattening out. First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain.... I guess Donovan saw a snail on a lock in his garden sometime.

Everybody wang chung tonight. What'd they say?

Really ? That's common knowledge ? Are you all a race of advanced Buddhas or something ? My best guess was it was about long term geologic changes, or something, caterpillar would have never occurred to me, though now it makes perfect sense, thanks

Eight sided whispering hallelujah hatrack
Seven faced marble eye transitory dream doll
six proud walkers on jinglebell rainbow
Five men writing in fingers of gold
Four men tracking down the great white sperm whale
Three girls wait in a foreign dominion
Ride in the whale belly
Fade away in moonlight
Sink beneath the waters
to the coral sand below
Now is the time of returning

'splain, please? I totally get the imagery in the 1st verse of the song then the 1st refrain through the end of the song I'm floating. Certain things I get (although my eyes were open wide they might have just as well been closed) but others are just words strung together in a lovely way (I wandered through my playing cards and they would not let her be).
Love this song...

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

<refrain>
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

(refrain)

She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.

(refrain)

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

(refrain)

And while we're at it, what about Bruce Springsteens Blinded by the Light (which I always associate with Manfred Mann)

One could easily fill up an entire thread with Col. Bruce lyrics that fit the bill

Here are a few....

In the year of Otad
When crane became crone
And the factories manicured stale salt lugs
The sensitive film realized cabbage
And then came the sixes

I straddled the Equator
With a canister of sediment
The annex vortex tranquil and adjust these grief

Along came the East wind
Confused by the dark, I suppose
And the kiss meant for the lily
Ended up on the rose

Cheese Frog! Cheese Frog! Cheese Frog!
Sputung! Sputung! Sputung!
MILK!

John Lennon was quoted as saying that with so many people interpeting all his song lyrics, he was going to give them a hard time with lyrics that sounded profound, but meant nothing. He succeeded!
