It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16th July at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family.

Jon Lord, the legendary keyboard player with Deep Purple co-wrote many of the bands legendary songs including Smoke On The Water and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career.

Best known for his Orchestral work Concerto for Group & Orchestra first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 and conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold, a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.

Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from Deep Purple in 2002.

Jon passes from Darkness to Light.

Jon Lord 9 June 1941 – 16 July 2012.

OH! Bummed to see the news of his passing. An amazing keyboard player, I wore out my Dad's "Made In Japan." tape when I was a kid.

Thank you Jon & DP for that summer 1972 show Boston Common -- thanks Jon for that unbelievable playing on Help -- Our Lady of the Skies -- Place in Line -- and on all the Deep Purple records

Very, very sad. With all due respect to Gregg Allman, he was rock music's greatest keyboardist. He also wrote "Concerto for Group and Orchestra," which was the first ever combination of rock music with a full symphony. What a tragic loss. RIP Jon Lord

Not something that I wanted read today or any other day for that matter. Incredible musician who was also a great guy who was a pleasure to deal with. He got a kick out of watching my buddy drive Ritchie crazy playing soccer. Especially when he found out that we were Canadian hockey guys who had never played organized soccer of any sort. (That same info just pissed Ritchie off more in a fun way) He also admired our ability to make beer disappear.

Admired Jon when he called it quits from Deep Purple but urged the others to continue on. Accepting that he was/would be too ill for the road but knowing the pthers loved it.

Now the man really can go Spacetruckin'.

RIP Jon - you will always be one of the best.

Should read Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jon Lord passes away. At a minimum, Deep Purple Mk II could have been inducted on the influence of Smoke on the Water alone. The exclusion of certain, very popular progressive, hard rock and "corporate" arena rock bands is like the baseball of fame not inducting first baseman because they don't think the position is athletic enough or excluding pitchers because they don't play every day. Just odd.

I enjoyed his late 70s and early 80s Whitesnake contributions too. RIP John.

What a loss. Lord had such a great sound, great sensibilities about music. So many great moments:
- the jam in the intro to "Lazy"
- the majestic opening to "Perfect Strangers"
- the cool, sparse solo in "Maybe I'm a Leo"
- the licks in synch with Blackmore's playing especially on classical riffs like in "Gypsy's Kiss" and "Lazy"

Heck, you could list cool Jon Lord music all day. I will crank up "You Keep On Moving," where his organ solo really hits the note.

I'm at a loss for words right now. Deep Purple's music had a real impact on me.

I'm just grateful that I to got see Jon with Deep Purple back in 1987 at the Hartford Civic Center (On their House of Blue Light Tour).

Very cool, Jim. I recall that Joan didn't go over too well with Purple's audience.
Ian, Jon, Roger, Ritchie and Paicey were great that night.

ugh!!! This sucks!

This brings tears........

I take care of cancer patients on daily basis. It can be a tough road for some and pancreatic is a rough one. I saw he died of a PE(pulmonary embolism). I know sometimes when a patient is on chemo that can be a complication from it.

I was not expecting to hear this today, what a downer.

He gave Deep Purple part of they're trade mark sound.

Concerto studio release set for September

Jon’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, re-recorded by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and a selection of invited guests, is set to be released by Edel Records in September (ABC Records in Australia).

After more than 100 performances worldwide and numerous revisions, the new recording represents Jon’s definitive version of the masterpiece, which in 1969 pointed his career in a new direction and laid the foundation for an astounding musical reputation and career.

Guests and soloists on the new recording include Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Morse along with Jon’s ‘house singers’ Steve Balsamo and Kasia Laska. It was recorded at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall by Abbey Road Studio‘s crew.

The recording was conducted by Paul Mann, whose in-depth experience with the piece includes conducting its 30th anniversary resurrection at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1999 and the ensuing world tour with Deep Purple.

The new release will be accompanied by a specially filmed documentary.

Rest now Jon.......

I have wondered which controlled the other - Jon or that monster Hammond B3 he created.
