Styx played at my high schoool .. I think it was '75 and I wouldn't go see them then. Hope the folks that like them enjoy your clip. That Lady song made me want to pop my ear drums.

REO Speedwagon was another somewhat local (downstate if I remember) band I didn't care for. The only time I ever saw them was when they opened for Siegel-Schwall. It was when they first started and it was at a VFW like beer hall. They came out and were wearing spandex outfits. It was not a good mix for that crowd, people were booing them.

Small rant here...

I wish I was as cool as some of y'all when I was younger.

There is a phenomenon around here, when a band name comes up, a ton of people love to pile on and chime in, "man that band sucks, I hated them 30 years ago too."

Again, I wish I was that cool, but apparently I wasn't.

REO Speedwagon back in the day, check this album:

And its not just this band, again, small rant, now over.

Styx gets a bum rap sometimes. They have some great stuff especially the early stuff. The harmony guitar parts were very well done.

I enjoyed the Damn Yanee shows that I saw. ept ted away from the mic and concentrate on guitar more. Plus with other songwriters, it git him away from some of his usual patterns and at times a different approach. Live i found them even better probably because Ted added a lot more leads live.

Rant accepted & approved!

It depends on what generation you are coming from... If you were in High School in the late 70's early 80's (as I was) then bands like REO, Styx, VanHalen were important... Grand Illusion & Pieces of Eight by Styx were great albums imo.

That REO live album is great. Their next couple studio albums after that one also had great songs too, before the slick studio production and overly sappy ballads took over for High Infidelity and beyond...

And Styx 1975-1979 put out some great rock n roll songs. Grand Illusion is probably their most complete album. They too took their production concepts and the thematic aspect too far and became a parody of themselves by the early 80s. Doesn't render their mid-career music bad though (to me). I know some couldn't stand them but different boats...

I was a big REO and Styx fan back in the day. My very first album, which I still own, was REO's first album. Styx and REO both went all commercial and poppy for a while, but a lot of other groups did the same thing trying to hit the big pay day. BUT, after Dennis Deyoung's departure from the Styx line up, James Young and Tommy Shaw decided to take the band back to its rock roots and have come up with some really killer tunes. Take this one for example...

Light - Up every - body.

Kinda of a theme song back in the day. There first four or five aalbums were great. Same era as big Dave and I was there with ya brother...........REO, not so much but they were a good live band. Now Styx has a Toronto boy, Larry Gowan on vocals and keys (has been for more than 10 years actually) and he nails it.

Equinox is a great album. They had an amazing run for a while with Equinox, Crystall Ball, Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. Cornerstone was a bit too poppy for me but then Paradise Theater was hard rockin' again or about 50/50 but it's still a classic album. Kilroy was here was awful (to me) - a steaming pile of cow dung. I really like the new Styx with Gowan. They rock harder and leave out the broadway/pop stuff.

The REO live album is pretty kick ass too.

And I saw Damn Yankees live three times and they kicked maximum azz at every show. and they did a song or too from Ted, Tommy, & Jack's past too which was coll and they always seemed to be having fun which was infectious. Their version of Styx's "Renegade" was sweet. They could not have picked a better Styx tune. I even remember them playing on "Unplugged." Jack & Tommy did a pair of records too which feature their vocal harmonies.

As far as Nuge goes, he's pretty out there and seemingly more over the top than ever but I've always liked his humor, his guitar playing and his dedication to promoting Detroit rock & roll. I too would bet Nuge has used some drugs, especially in the early daze of the Amboy Dukes. He seems like Charlie Daniels - used to be a cool rock & roller having a good time and now he's a conservative whacko who should concentrate more on music. I'm not a lefty or a righty so I'm not picking on conservatives. There are liberal whackos too. One of my best friends is a liberal whacko. I just think Charlie shouldn't change the words to his songs and Nuge should shut up about Obama and gun rights and talk more about the guitar that was made in the motor city and was guaranteed to blow the balls off a charging rhino at 50 paces. And Damn Yankees should reunite for a tour or record. Smile when you say Damn Yankee!

The King Of Gonzo is a great guitar player. He can rock and jam with the best of them. He also takes himself a little too seriously and ought to chill a bit... considering all the kids he's had out of wedlock.

I liked Styx back in the day and they're good band. They had some songs I liked and some that were stupid. The Behind The Music episode cracked me up. Good for the other guys telling Dennis DeYoung to get lost.

REO had one decent song: Riding The Storm Out live. Other than that, REO stinks.
