UPDATE 7/9/2012: Got Leo back this morning! A guy called from a house about a mile away. Leo had found a doggie girlfriend there, which had kept Leo occupied for days. (If he could only talk about what he did this weekend ...) So glad to have him back home!

My trusted companion for the last five years is gone. It was all so unexpected. I didn't even
get a chance to tell him goodbye.

Leo--an English Shepherd that we raised from a pup, after rescuing him from the animal shelter five years ago--was the most devoted friend and smartest dog that I ever had, or ever will have. We had just gotten him back home Thursday evening, after he had been boarded at the vet for a couple of days to get his shots and a bath. His collar was off; we had washed it, and it was drying on the porch. We led him through the house to the backyard, where he was to sleep for the night.

We didn't discover until the next morning that the gate was left open, and he was gone. I know that if there was any way possible for Leo to come home on his own, he would. Which makes me think that he has been kept by someone, or else harm has come to him.

Although he was without his collar, he does have a microchip. We have checked the county animal shelter daily, without luck. I can only hope that someone decent has him and will do the right thing by turning him in.

Our hearts are broken. I know he was "just a dog." But there wasn't a single minute that I spent with Leo that wasn't a good one. He was highly intelligent, faithful, sympathetic, playful. At my side every moment, followed me like a shadow. You could not have asked for a better friend, and I certainly didn't deserve him. But I am glad that he blessed us with his presence.

Anything or anyone you love can be gone in a moment, without warning. Love while you can.

Hi Leo. I really hope you have some luck tracing the whereabouts of you beloved dog. Here in Widnes, UK a local resident has his English Bull Terrier stolen in a break-in. They put up hundreds of flyers and opened a facebook page to help look for him. After a couple of months they were contacted to say a dog matching their dogs description had been spotted several miles away. Once the police were contacted they managed to get there dog back. Maybe you could do something along those lines, maybe starting here with anyone local to you. Good luck in your search.
