It had been a while since a Guns N’ Roses concert had been the source of controversy. We had hoped that their dubious reputation was in the past, but it seems they may be back to their old tricks.

Performing in Manchester, England last night (May 29), the band didn’t begin their set until over an hour after their expected start time of 11:00PM, causing many in the crowd to walk out before they even took the stage.

Although Guns N’ Roses performed a 33-song show that lasted three hours, it was in front of a largely empty house. NME reported that there were only 6,000 people in the 16,000-seat Manchester Arena when Axl Rose and his charges played their first song.

Guns N’ Roses have a long history with not beginning concerts on time. Back in February, former manager Alan Niven claimed it was the result of Axl Rose‘s stage fright. “The singer is out there naked, and sometimes that’s hard to do,” Niven said. “Obviously, Axl still has problems with it because he’s still late.”

The band, however, chose not only refuse to apologize for their delay, but not even mention it. On their Facebook page, the band wrote, “A tip of the hat to the good folk at the M.E.N Arena Manchester To you say Manchester, United Kingdom rocks is an understatement! London calling!”

Hard to believe that there are even 6000 still willing to buy tickets. The decent thing to do would at least tell the openers to keep playing instead of big gaps. To expect them to go on at the proper time is kind of dumb at this point also though. The crowd should have expected it. To be honest an hour behind is pretty good for him.

Well, I'm not interested in defending Axle Rose. He is and always has been a tremendous jackass. However, the Allman Brothers Band went on over an hour late on Friday night at Wanee this year and also chose not to comment on it in the slightest. So, it's hard for us to throw stones at GnR fans and say, "Why would they even bother to show up anymore?"

As we discussed on this site at the time, the late start with no explanation caused wild speculations on Gregg's health, and much of this could have been alleviated with a few brief words from one of the band members (Warren seems like a good choice). Granted, GnR has always been known for this, and the ABB have not at least not in the last 20 years as far as I know. Still, this band has tremendous communication issues with fans.

Axle just needs to away already. It's obvious that he does not respect his fans at all. He makes excuses as to why the shows start late, saying that things go wrong, etc. He's an idiot.

X2.

I would walk out on an Axl & Poses show anytime. Even if it started on time!
It would have to be a festival show anyway. No way i would pay money to see them specifically.

Izzy Stradlin Joins Guns N’ Roses for London Concert

Just a couple of days after Axl Rose‘s habitual tardiness sparked an apparent mass exodus at a London Guns N’ Roses show, the band made up for it by giving fans at their Thursday (May 31) concert a little something extra: A surprise appearance from former GNR guitarist Izzy Stradlin.

Stradlin, who’s rejoined the band on tour periodically since quitting in 1991, stepped out on stage for six songs: ‘You Could Be Mine,’ Dead Flowers,’ ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,’ ‘Nightrain,’ ‘Paradise City,’ and ’14 Days.’ As Blabbermouth notes, GNR haven’t performed ’14 Days’ live since 1991 — coincidentally, also at a London show.

Rose has generally seemed to have an open-door policy with Stradlin since he left the group; when Izzy’s replacement, Gilby Clarke, was unavailable for a string of shows in 1993, he temporarily rejoined the fold to fill in. Stradlin returned to the lineup in 2006, serving as a surprise special guest at a New York show before hitting the road with the group for 13 European concerts.

In recent years, it might be understating things somewhat to say that Stradlin has focused on his solo career; between 2007 and 2010, he treated fans to a torrid burst of creativity, releasing five albums of new material. He hasn’t released anything since 2010?s ‘Wave of Heat,’ which featured his former Guns bandmate Duff McKagan on bass, but he’s clearly still playing — and if this GNR reunion is anything like the last one, it could signal plenty of new music from Stradlin.

Once an ass, always an ass. Do yourself a favor Axl and just go away.

Nice to hear Izzy is still playing and doing his thing.

A crowd of people that all like Axl is a scarey concept.

Only an hour late? Hell, that's early for GNR.
I won tickets one time to see GNR and a lady I worked with wanted them to give her daughter for her birthday. I generously sold them to her, being the kind soul that I am.

Found out the next day that GNR was FOUR HOURS late and that half the crowd had left before they ever came on stage.

So they are doing better than the old days....

Waaah, everyone keep whining about Axl. All the whining you people do makes you out to look like as much a baby as you all claim Axl is. Ever think about that? Probably not, you're all too busy complaining.

And on the stage fright topic...everyone gets it. You try walking out in front of X number thousand of people and not get nervous. Doesn't matter how often you've done it. Tom Petty said in his book "Conversations", and I'm paraphrasing, "Everyone gets stage fright, if you don't, then there's something wrong internally with you"

And when you come to his defence each time, it completes the cycle of childish behavior.

You are defending a guy who is clearly in the wrong over and over. You can't change that so it makes your side doomed to failure on this topic. Axl provides the material for the ongoing plot. Either way, he doesn't care what any of us or anyone else thinks.

If it gives us on here a break from kicking at Gregg, Dickey, Butch, TTB or Warren then I say WELCOME AXL.
