He was remarking on a single show that he caught, and I think he said, "I thought he could have done better."

So, I don't think he was saying that Hendrix sucked--just that he might have caught him on a bad night.

Chris Trucks told me that Duane and Jimi talked about playing together at Atlanta Pop but Hendrix ended up passing out and it never happened. Maybe he got dosed, who knows...

Lots of errors in that transcript. Gregg and Duane's father died in 1949.... BEFORE the Korean War even started. Also says that Gregg had a KIDNEY transplant which we all know was a LIVER transplant (then says he received a liver from someone)...oopsie.

Also, he's already ENGAGED to the "groupie" he met at a Jacksonville concert THIS year?????? Some people never learn.

Heard Greg on Howard today and he was good. Greg It is worth listening to. Once Greg gets started he seems to warm up. But he told some interesting stories and how things really came about. The true story of the Allman and Woman album was interesting.

Did it have anything to do with Mermaids?

I have had Hendrix's show from the Atlanta Pop Festival for years, and I think it sounds great. If that is the show Gregg was talking about, I disagree. It sure doesn't sound like an off night to me.

Much like Gregg's dismissive comments about the Marshall Tucker Band and others in his book, these sort of statements diminish Gregg more than the people he is cutting down.

I think you may have misheard that one. Howard through that rumor out there and Gregg set him straight. I believe he said he was curious if Hendrix could be as good live as all of his records were. Gregg listened from back stage and said Jimi did not disappoint.

Appreciate the correction, Vanistheman. Some of the comments on this thread made me think Gregg was less than kind to Jimi, but "did not disappoint" is pretty solid praise when you consider how much hype there was around Hendrix at that point in this career.

Sorry to be so touchy, but I'm one of the biggest Hendrix fans on this board and had to stick up for my man Jimi!

I don't know about the interview. I'm talking about his book. In My Cross to Bear Gregg specifically says about seeing Hendrix play live: "I thought he could have done better." That's why Howard asked him about it, but then Gregg outright denied it. I don't think he remembers writing it.

After Gregg left, Howard said something to the effect as "so you all don't think I'm crazy and making this stuff up..." then proceeded to read directly from Greggs book. His opinion of seeing Hendrix live was that he really wasn't that impressed.
