I am really digging the Mountain Jam they played in Hartford this year, I think it was August 2003

On the strength of what already circulates - 12/31/70

On the strength of what all the edited, cut or missing MJ's might sound like - 12/31/70!!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of most modern MJ's - it's nice to see some of the teases they build in (like the Blue Sky jam) but, for me at least, MJ just isn't MJ without the drums & bass solos. Horses for courses...

Here is something that just hit me for the Beacon Run - sort of a prediction I guess...OK, they start off the show with Mountain Jam - Part 1 which is everything before drums...Are ya with me?. Play their usual 3 hour Beacon show BUT end the show with Mountain Jam Part 2 which is from the Bass solo on. They could put the drum solo wherever they want, either include it with Mtn Jam or any other song that allows for drums....Simply end the show with the end of Mountain Jam...and then the encore! That would work very well for me. Mountain Jam is the "Bookends" for the entire show! ...everything else in between are the chapters to the book... Hey I like it! I'm sure some of you will like the idea and some of you won't but it could be done. With Warren Haynes in the band we already know to expect the unexpected. I mean we've seen then open with Mtn Jam, Whipping Post, Layla etc, which a few years ago we would never of thought possible...so why not?

The Grateful Dead have done similar things with songs like"Playin In The Band" and "The Other One" and Widespread Panic does this with "Driving Song" where the song is split up... Sweeeet!

I think that would be awesome...especially if through a couple of instrumentals in the middle like maybe: True Gravity or Kind of Bird!!!

Good call, EddieP

Phil and Friends took it even further, I think. Sometimes you'd see they skipped a verse from The Other One or Dark Star or something, or that they didn't finish a song, and they'd complete it the next night. Maybe that's a little too cute - it's definitely not an ABB kind of thing to do - but they did find ways to keep things interesting.

Mountain Jam is usually a little over half an hour long, so if you didn't sleep you could probably do around 40 in a day.

Jimmy Herring, sort of like Jack Pearson, really flexed their musical muscle with the ABB instrumentals. For what it's worth, the Mountain Jams with him & Derek are all worth seeking out.

Plus, they played Loan Me a Dime then.

1) Eat A Peach--Duane's slide solo during the second half of this song is just unbelievable.
2) Some Mountain Jam that somebody sent me on an unmarked disc (This gem from the Duane era really, really smokes, but I don't know the date!)
3) Ludlow Garage--So many different jams and such incredible peaks!
4) 9/23/00--Jimmy Herring's finest moment as an Allman Brother

I'm confused. I was under the impression that MJ hadn't been played in years, including the 90's.

The Charlotte Mountain Jam and the one on the instant live I forgot the venue and the date... There's one where they quote "Afro-Blue" and one where they quote "Blue Sky", and those both knock me out... The Fillmore one of course... Another epic is the 8/6/00 (I think that's the date) Warren sits in with the Jimmy/Derek lineup... Breathtaking a 3 guitar MJ. LOVE IT!!! WOO HOO!

the sheer brilliance of this thread has me by the unmentionables...what everyone must understand, is that having never seen the brothers live, the concept of song rotation is an art that I have never been able to fully appreciate. Going through old setlists can really give someone a complete picture of the different phases of a band...just watching what they used to open their sets through the years is a study in the bands growth/evolution.

worth the time invested...of course, that goes without saying
