On another post somebody referenced a rumour on a phish board, and I googled it to see myself. I was reminded of yet another reason why I hate phish. One minute reading some of the trash on that board reminded me how retarded most of those wooks are. phish to me has a collection of trust fund d bag fans that largely know jack s**t about music. Musically to me, phish plays with absolutely no taste, no sense of the roots of American music, and is just lame a** white kid trust fund junk. I won't discuss their lyrics as they are the weakest goofiest lyrics in the word, vocally it is garbage as well.

My intent is not to offend anyone, but I'm curious if anyone on here hates phish as much as me? Or if anyone here actually likes phish?

I don't think any music has ever engendered feelings of hatred in me. I find that notion odd.

That said, I love going to Phish shows. I don't know one song or one lyric, but the shows are mind-blowing. The extended jams can be pretty amazing. And I get there and back in a helicopter with my d-bag trust fund friends. What's not to love?

Lol, maybe you're right. I'm sitting here trying to brew up a way to make it to all good, scranton and telluride, thinking it would be so much easier if I was a treacherous wook with a trust fund.

I'm still a big fan. I am looking forward to seeing them at Blossom, OH in June for the third year in a row. The last two years were very good.

i used to be all Phish all the time but I changed as I got older. I still enjoy a big portion of their catalog, esp the funky extended jams in songs like Sneaking Sally Through the Ally, Boogie on Reggea Women, Funky Bitch, Ghost etc as well as the longer classics like Squirming Coil, divided sky and Slave to the Traffic Light. I'm not crazy about a huge portion of their lyrical content but that isn't the point with that band anyways IMO. They can get down and often do. Late 90's Phish and esp Big Cypress was a very special phase in the musical soundtrack to my life. I have continued to see them atleast once every year that they were touring since. Deer Creek, Alpine Valley, Starlake and esp Blossom.....good times!

God I hate phish........

Me too, but for no other reason than Trey A. gives me the creeps. Well, two reasons...Imho, the guy is the best "Noodler" on guitar I've ever heard. No structure, sense of solo building, just aimless wandering...Definitely not my cup of tea.

I like phish - have seen them several times and will see them again this summer. They were better in the 90s, but that's neither here nor there.

there are several differnt phish boards. one or two of them are "famous" for the kind of thing you mentioned; there's one I visit that is a pretty friendly place, for the most part.
Of course, there is never any dissension on this board, especially when it comes to TTB

regardless, the last thing I consider when I decide what kind of music to listen to is what people on the internet say about them. If you don't like the music, that's fine. I'm sure we disagree on other music too, but that's OK.

and, btw, one of the worst times I ever had at a concert was when some drunk biker dude was shouting in my ear the whole night. the music was great but this guy was reeaallly getting on my nerves. I'm too much of a pacifist (and too small) to have done anything about it. I have nothing against bikers, just big drunk people shouting in my ear for a whole show.
the concert - ABB at Great Woods. didn't stop me from seeing them again. and again, and again. I'm planning on the Harborlights pavillion show this August.

There are plenty of people on this board who hate Phish, so you may make some new friends with this thread

Personally, I think they can be very uneven, both live and in the studio, but they are one of those bands that when they are on, they are about as good as it gets. Some of the best shows I have ever seen were Phish shows, 11/11/95 and 10/31/96 for example.

I'd like to specifically address this...

"Trey A. gives me the creeps....Imho, the guy is the best "Noodler" on guitar I've ever heard. No structure, sense of solo building, just aimless wandering...Definitely not my cup of tea."

This can be true of Trey, sometimes he falls into aimless wanking. Fair point.

However, he has also written some of the MOST structured, intricate, complex rock music this side of Frank Zappa. Songs like You Enjoy Myself, The Curtain and Reba contain passages that are some of my favorite music ever, by anybody, period.

In my opinion, Phish lost their way after Jerry died. Before that, they were a rigorously tight band with fantastic chops, and while they did a lot of long jams and improvisation, there wasn't as much noodling.

Then the Dead crowd, or at least certain unsavory parts of it, needed someplace to go, and these were people who had been listening to 20-30 minute Drum/Space jams for years. They wanted the JAMZ, brah, they weren't interested in tight, relentlessly rehearsed prog rock.

Phish wanted to cater to those people and started a long, slow drift away from what actually made them special into aimless noodling. Drugs, especially Trey's opiate addicition, undoubtedly played a part as well.

However, Trey is now clean and sober, and I find some of their shows from last year to be the best music they have played since 96-97. Check out the September 2011 shows from Colorado. Everybody's taste is different, but that sounds like a pretty damn good band to me.

I don't "hate" phish. Just never got it. Tried many times, does not work for me.

Hell, my old trade list is over on phishhook but there are no phish shows on it...

I do enjoy the discussion board though.

This is an interesting theory. It kind of goes with my theory that phish piggybacked and profited off Jerry's death. It is interesting that you say that Jerry's death caused phish's music to get worse, personally I love the Dead and do not like any phish. But that is only my opinion and neither here nor there. I was probably a little harsh in my earlier statement.

My main point was just the **** I was reading on the board. They were putting down Warren and Chris Robinson, which is fine whatever, but the facts were all wrong. And the main beef I had was the vile tone. The insults were like things I would expect to hear from rednecks at a keney chesney show or something. And it is not the first time I have seen this out of the phish crowd.

There is something like an irrational hatred of Warren among certain segments of the jam community. Not just Phish fans, many Dead fans dislike Warren so intensely it blows my mind.

Don't judge all Phish fans by Phantasy Tour. I know that has to be the site you're talking about. Most Phish fans with any sense stay away from there. I've been a Phish fan since before there was an Internet and I've never posted on that site once.

Doesn't mean you have to like the music, but if we can agree that not all Phish fans are juvenile douchebags, then my work here is done

I understand... I don't hate or dislike Warren. But a little Warren goes a long way. Not a Grateful Dead fan, so I can only guess that when he assumed "control "...of the Dead, it changed their sound drastically. As melodically as he can play, Warren is not Jerry. As softly as he can sing, Warren was not Jerry, not even close. A case of too much Warren. I can empathize....

Honestly, this is about the only board I've found that doesn't have this kind of childish behavior overtaking it, which is why it's pretty much the only internet forum I read/post on on a regular basis. So many of them are just not even readable, someone has an opinion and no matter what they are right, people get into arguments with people they don't know about things that neither of them know anything about. So many forums I've tried to read are just ridiculous. Luckily there's this one.

Anyway, back on topic. I'm kind of in the same boat of never having really gotten Phish. have a few albums, enjoy some songs, really don't care for most. Have seen them live twice, the first time at Cobo Hall in November of '09 and I really liked it. Was the fall tour opener and they had apparently rehearsed for like 7 hours the day before from what I read, set list had a lot of the songs that I like and the jams weren't very noodley at all. Then I saw them at Pine Knob last summer and didn't really like it. It was a VERY "jammy" and noodley show. The first set was 6 song stretched out to 90 minutes (if memory serves, maybe it was 2nd set) and just did not keep my interest at all. As much as I liked the first show I'll probably never go see them again, especially since their ticket prices are fairly high, don't have the concert budget to spend that much on a band that I don't really like, and have already seen multiple times.

exactly the site I was thinking of.

I would say that Phish has many different styles - some very intricate, well composed, with almost "classical" elements (YEM, Reba, Bowie). Sometimes they play straight rock jams, sometimes they do kinda spacey "ambient" funk jams (not my favorite). What I like about them is what is going on under the surface. Page is a great keyboard player and Mike does some pretty melodic things on the bass.
At their best, they to out on the limb, jump, and do a triple summersault landing. At their worst they jump and fall flat on their face.
you gotta just go along for the ride.

"sometimes they do kinda spacey "ambient" funk jams (not my favorite)."

Agreed. A lot of newer/younger Phish fans, especially those who got into the band after 1997, LOVE that stuff and think that is what defines Phish. I'm glad they like it, but I don't. There are so many other things Phish is better at, in my opinion, and that are more unique to them.

I don't know if the band intentionally incorporated that sound to draw in Deadheads and other fans of that kind of jamming, but if they did, it worked.

"At their best, they go out on the limb, jump, and do a triple summersault landing. At their worst they jump and fall flat on their face."

Well put I once said that Phish's secret to success was that they weren't afraid to suck

Feel free to have fun with that one, non-Phish fans

Fair enough. But one must listen in order to "Not like"....

I, have hopefully terminated any future anticipated or otherwise unlikely presented listening opportunities.

Hate is a strong word. The phrase "annoyed by" might be a better choice...

Having said that, I myself am not a fan. I saw them at the Great Went thing in 97 up in Limestone, ME and that was enough. I came away somewhat underwhelmed.

They all seem to be able to play, and they at times surround themselves with great players in their solo gigs...wasn't Oteil in Vida Blue with Paige McConnell? And I did recently see a video on youtube of a Trey solo show where he covered the Five Stairsteps song O-o-h Child, which was kinda cool....

I dunno, for me there's nothing about them that makes me seek them out, if that makes any sense. I see where their appeal is for folks perhaps a bit younger than I am. I think in my case they are just "after my time" and it makes it hard for me to truly get into them. Other stuff I would much rather bend an ear to, if that makes sense.

Trying to be diplomatic here, guys
