Never been to the Kentucky Derby, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
But seriously.... Haven't been to the race, but I do have a friend who makes hats for the Derby. So if the wife is looking for just the right hat...

Gongrats on the nice prize! Sounds great.

I used to do some business in Lexington and Frankfort, and one guy with whom I met asked me if I had ever been to the Derby. When I responded that I had not, he said, "Aw man, you gotta go, its like tits on parade."

If you have a chance you should take the ride over to Lexington. The ride back to Woodford Reserve is gorgeous.

You lucky rascal!
I've never been, but sure would love to. I've been in love with the sport for many years, and with pretty much everything connected. Just reserved a room today on the other side of B'ham to stay at the night before, then proceed to an OTB that will carry the full card.

Have a blast, and give us a report when you get back.

Don't forget to go to the Oaks on Friday.

I'm a lifelong Louisvillian. Oaks day is when the locals go to the track. Not quite as crowded as Derby Day, but still huge with all the atmosphere. Oaks crowd is about 110k, the Derby is about 160k.

3rd tier reserved seating that you will be able to see the races--something that few people at Churchill actually will be able to see--you are definitely doing it the only way to do it--unless you're still in your 20s and don't mind the mosh pit that the infield is on Derby Day (Hunter Thompson wrote a famous piece about that experience)

As for the Derby, Trinniberg guarantees an early pace that may compromise Bodemeister, who appears to have developed more than all of the others--and has run faster speed figures by far

Hansen and Union Rags both have the look of horse who will finish between 3rd and 5th

Could be a bomb--nobody is saying anything about the west coast horses--so there is likely to be value on those

I totally agree with the comment about Lexington--it's beautiful; Louisville pretty much is a **** hole

I'll be at wedding in the Hamptons--have to bring a laptop and portable connection to the wedding so I can send it in through my on- track account; i won't make my decision on who to play until much closer to race time--pay close attention to comments about recent workouts

I was born and raised in Louisville.

I can tell ya, the entire city SWELLS to about twice its size during Derby week due to so many people coming in.. Expect to NOT get anywhere fast on the roads.

Endless opportunities to party.

I've been to the Derby twice.
Both times I was in the infield and can honestly say I never really saw much of the races but It is a good time if the weather is nice.
Alot of partying and what not.

I got an email from Indianapolis Motor Speedway and this year they are having a deal where you can get ticket packages for the Kentucky Derby and the Indy 500.
I thought about going to both and getting tickets for the Derby where I can actually see the races for a change.

Excellent analysis, imho.
I like the fact that Union Rags and Hansen weren't flat out in their last. Bodemeister was.
He had to have the purse money to get in. I think it sets up for a stalker. Creative Cause could be a player.

Union Rags is an absolute stud of a horse. Given a clean race, I think he's hard to beat. That said, I think there are pleanty of contenders that you can build in to make some money. Dullahan ran a really nice race a couple of weeks ago. I'll Have Another is one I like. Agreed that Creative Cause should be in the mix.

I love this sh!t. I've watched every qualifying race.

I imagine a scene like this for you. From one of my favorite movies, Let It Ride. I hope you have a day like Trotter. If you haven't seen this movie, you have to see it. A regular horse gambler who has a very lucky day at the track and keeps letting it ride. Its so friggin funny.

David Johansen always had them hysterical laughing

Cried like a baby again watching the clip. I always do.
I've been going to the track since 1987. Whoever wrote the movie goes a bunch. They got it exactly right. The emotions, the cast of characters, the jealousy, but overshadowed by the comraderie, and everybody pulling for everybody.

A note on some of the characters.....Looney became Buster Poindexter. Evangeline is Cynthia Nixon, who later became famous in Sex In the City. Jennifer Tilley, after her career as a football salesman, became a professional poker player, often seen with Phil "the Unabomer" Locke.

Nypeachhead, I hope you have a very good day at the Derby

Louisville didn't turn out so good for us when we were there

We went for the Breeders' Cup, stayed at a Best Western and, along with about half a dozen other rooms, were robbed in what was clearly an inside job

It's certainly a cottage industry there around big race time for miscreants to separate cash filled partiers from their money

After the races, we headed straight to Lexington to get out of town

Obviously Lexington is spectacularly beautiful. Lousiville is not

I haven't been back since the renovation, but CD as race tracks go--and unless you're in 3rd tier reserved seating or the like--is not the best place from which to watch the races

A year later I'm at Belmont and a guy comes up to me :"Hey, didn't you get robbed in Kentucky?"

He was staying in the room next to ours and was similarly hit

Nonetheless I'm one of those who believes racing is "the greatest game"

And turning the page after a loss is part of it

I feel like I have been going to the track my whole life. My grandmother was a big track person, and one of our closest family friends was Mike Venezia. Mike lived around the block from us and his son was my brothers age and they were good friends growing up. Mike and my dad became best friends. They looked like Devito and Arnold together. Mike was about five feet tall and my father is well over six feet. He used to bring us to the stables to ride the horses and watch the workouts. We would also go to the races a few times a year. You are right, whoever wrote this movie, did their research.

Unfortunately, Mike Venezia was killed in a race at Belmont in 1988. I remember it like it was yesterday. Mike was a great turf racer and that is where he died. The award for sportsmanship is now named after him. Just read this article for the first time:
