Yesterday Charles Colson passed away. He was 80. He went from a staunch Nixon supporter (who allegedly said he'd run over his own grandmother to get Nixon elected) to the founder of Prison Fellowship in 1975.

"Charles Wendell Colson (October 16, 1931 – April 21, 2012) was a former Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973 and later a noted Evangelical Christian leader and cultural commentator.

"Once known as President Nixon's 'hatchet man,' Colson gained notoriety at the height of the Watergate affair for being named as one of the Watergate Seven, and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for attempting to defame Pentagon Papers defendant Daniel Ellsberg. He became a Christian in 1973, and the following year served seven months in the federal Maxwell Prison in Alabama as the first member of the Nixon administration to be incarcerated for Watergate-related charges.

"Colson's mid-life conversion to Christianity sparked a radical life change that lasted the remainder of his life. He began anew with a dual focus on both the non-profit ministry he founded after his time behind bars, Prison Fellowship, and to Christian worldview teaching and training. Colson was also a public speaker and the author of more than 30 books. He was founder and chairman of The Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, which is 'a research, study, and networking center for growing in a Christian worldview', and includes Colson's daily radio commentary, BreakPoint, heard on more than 1,400 outlets across the United States.

Colson received 15 honorary doctorates, and in 1993 was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, the world's largest annual award (over US$1 million) in the field of religion, given to a person who 'has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life's spiritual dimension'. He donated this prize to further the work of Prison Fellowship, as he did all his speaking fees and royalties. In 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President George W. Bush.

I grabbed this from the beginning of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Colson .

I was skeptical about his conversion at first, but the more I read the more I realized that he'd done exactly what he said he'd done, and that he'd really dedicated his life to Christ.

He was a man of integrity who made a difference in the lives of countless prisoners while they were in prison and after they were released.

I didn't realize he was still alive. Who else from Watergate is still among us? I can only think of John Dean and Gordon Liddy.

What about Anthony "Tony" Ulasewitz?
He's the one who testified that "something wasn't kosher" about the Watergate burglary
Rest in peace, Mr. Colson

I'll give him credit for working for the benefit of prisoners. Before that, not so much.

R.I.P., Charles.

I saw a recent (I'm assuming) interview of him on tv last night.

He truly was a brother.

Chuck Colson was a GREAT man. He helped a lot of people and he did not count their prior mistakes against them. He was very open about his own mistakes. He clearly understood where he went wrong and spoke openly about it. Better yet he used what he learned form his own experiences to help others.

This world needs more like him.

Nixon's head scumbag!. he made [karl rove] look like a man of character and decency. I have a hard time believing he "found jesus" in federal prison. It was a ploy to get parolled sooner, and being a convicted felon, he need a new gig after being tricky dick's hatchet man.

Win, lose, or draw, He paid a debt for his actions...now He is gone and will again face His actions...and a price will be paid. He has suffered enough in life. Let death bring Him rest. Just MHO only, my feeling only.
RIP Charles Colson.

Your comment makes clear that you are not very well informed on the man's accomplishments yet you are very quick to pass judgement on the things he did wrong. You really should research what good he accomplished while in prison and since. He was one that did not need to be reminded of his failures. He was aware of them and sought forgiveness.

If everyone is judged only for their worst deeds then you, me and everyone else are all in trouble. How about this. If no one deserves forgievness then instead of Jammin in Heaven you can be sure that Duane, Levon & Jimi are all burning in hell. I believe not.

There is an entire Forum on this website called Whipping Post where you can post items about controversial subjects like politics and religion. Charles Colson never played a lick of music in his life, as far as I know politics and religion are really the only topics relevant to his life.

Why you thought to post this in Anything Goes is beyond me.

I haven't posted to Whipping Post since late last year. I've found it to be a far too contentious region for my interests so I stay away. I'll admit I thought about posting there, but figured that Colson is hardly a controversial figure any more, so I decided it belonged here. Maybe some people take issue with his outspoken Christianity but that's their problem, not mine.

It's unfortunate that you decided to complain about this. There are vast numbers of incredibly greater problems throughout the world. Why on Earth did you choose this? Good grief!

And FWIW, here's the Allman connection: in an interview from the late '60s Duane said the country needed a "good liberal Democrat". Since this was during Nixon's term, and since Colson was probably connected with him (I don't have the time or need to pinpoint the source. We've all seen and read it.), I figure I can wrangle a connection out of this. It isn't on the level of Tinker to Evans to Chance, but Colson to Nixon to Allman works for me

Now go and put some of your energy into dealing with something that matters!
