From Levon's webpage:

Dear Friends,
Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage...

We appreciate all the love and support and concern.
From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy

Levon Helm, Woodstock resident and drummer, the former leader of The Band, has died at age 71.

Helm died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him," said Larry Campbell, Helm's longtime guitarist and band leader. "As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."

Campbell, who has played with everyone from Bob Dylan to BB King, said his greatest honor was not only helping lead Helm's band, but knowing him.

"What I'm most proud of is he called me his partner," Campbell said. "For me to arrive at a place like that with a great man like him is the ultimate."

Sad.

I saw he was cancelling dates and saw something about Robbie Robertson
hoping all was okay with him, so not completely surprised.

Will pull out his Beacon appearance show from '09 and then some Band music

Heartbreaking news.

I loved his performance with the Brothers in 2009. I really enjoyed his set at Wanee a few years ago, too. I was just watching a Band video from the Last Waltz this morning.

He made a great comeback and brought a lot of joy to people in recent years.

I think what makes it so sad about losing someone like Levon is that beyond being a great musician, it is clear what a wonderful person he is and you can always see how "alive" he is. A joyful man who loves life and bringing joy to others. Very heartbreaking to see him go, but you surely know that he doesn't feel like he got short changed. He lived his life to the fullest and certainly "seized the day."

He will be missed. I will be thinking of him and his family.

Unbelievabky sad. From the Band, to his work on the old Vanguard label John Hammond records to more recent stuff he has done with Jorma on River Of Time to his exceptional solo albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt, Levon has blessed this world with a whole lot of great music. Prayers and thoughts go out to he and his family

Peace to you Levon. This forum is as public as I get online, so I will spin some of his music up right now and smile for him. There is a funny lad who keeps reminding me of a comment I made during my first meeting with him at which time he said I said "If you don't like the music of The Band I don't want to know you" , I am stickin to that.

I just saw this on his Facebook page. Levon is a musical gem; a warm human being, an outstanding vocalist, writer and drummer and a man who simply loves his fans. he will be missed and I personally will surely miss those fantastic rambles. Time to listen to Music From Big Pink. Peace Levon.

I cannot begin to tell you the impact this man and his music has had on my life. When a music legend passes on, it's always painful, but this one is just crushing.

He IS the real deal. Really grateful the music the past few years. Everything from Dirt Farmer on seemed to come out of nowhere to me. Like where the hell has this guy been for so long....

Much love for Levon Helm.
