http://loudwire.com/axl-rose-not-attending-rock-hall-ceremony-asks-inductio n-retracted/

After weeks of speculation, Axl Rose has written an open letter to fans stating he will not be attending the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this Saturday, April 14, in Cleveland, where his band Guns N’ Roses are set to be enshrined. Moreover, he has asked that his own induction be retracted.

The revelation comes weeks after ex-GN’R guitarist Slash said he’d love to play with the classic ‘Appetite for Destruction’ lineup, despite admitting that Rose hates his guts. It also follows drummer Steven Adler‘s comments in which he called the current Guns lineup ‘hacks‘ and later apologized, claiming all he wanted to do was play with his old GN’R bandmates.

Rose’s lengthy letter contains too many juicy tidbits to just pull a few quotes from, so here is the opus in its entirety here (as it appears on the official Guns N’ Roses Facebook page):

To: The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Guns N’ Roses Fans and Whom It May Concern,
When the nominations for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame were first announced I had mixed emotions but, in an effort to be positive, wanting to make the most of things for the fans and with their enthusiasm, I was honored, excited and hoped that somehow this would be a good thing. Of course I realized as things stood, if Guns N’ Roses were to be inducted it’d be somewhat of a complicated or awkward situation.

Since then we’ve listened to fans, talked with members of the board of the Hall Of Fame, communicated with and read various public comments and jabs from former members of Guns N’ Roses, had discussions with the president of the Hall Of Fame, read various press (some legit, some contrived) and read other artists’ comments weighing in publicly on Guns and the Hall with their thoughts.

Under the circumstances I feel we’ve been polite, courteous, and open to an amicable solution in our efforts to work something out. Taking into consideration the history of Guns N’ Roses, those who plan to attend along with those the Hall for reasons of their own, have chosen to include in “our” induction (that for the record are decisions I don’t agree with, support or feel the Hall has any right to make), and how (albeit no easy task) those involved with the Hall have handled things… no offense meant to anyone but the Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.

For the record, I would not begrudge anyone from Guns their accomplishments or recognition for such. Neither I or anyone in my camp has made any requests or demands of the Hall Of Fame. It’s their show not mine.

That said, I won’t be attending The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction 2012 Ceremony and I respectfully decline my induction as a member of Guns N’ Roses to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

I strongly request that I not be inducted in absentia and please know that no one is authorized nor may anyone be permitted to accept any induction for me or speak on my behalf. Neither former members, label representatives nor the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame should imply whether directly, indirectly or by omission that I am included in any purported induction of “Guns N’ Roses”.

This decision is personal. This letter is to help clarify things from my and my camp’s perspective. Neither is meant to offend, attack or condemn. Though unfortunately I’m sure there will be those who take offense (God knows how long I’ll have to contend with the fallout), I certainly don’t intend to disappoint anyone, especially the fans, with this decision. Since the announcement of the nomination we’ve actively sought out a solution to what, with all things considered, appears to be a no win, at least for me, “damned if I do, damned if I don’t” scenario all the way around.

In regard to a reunion of any kind of either the Appetite or Illusion lineups, I’ve publicly made myself more than clear. Nothing’s changed.

The only reason, at this point, under the circumstances, in my opinion whether under the guise of “for the fans” or whatever justification of the moment, for anyone to continue to ask, suggest or demand a reunion are misguided attempts to distract from our efforts with our current lineup of myself, Dizzy Reed, Tommy Stinson, Frank Ferrer, Richard Fortus, Chris Pitman, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and DJ Ashba.

Izzy came out with us a few times back in ’06 and I invited him to join us at our LA Forum show last year. Steven was at our show at the Hard Rock, later in ’06 in Las Vegas, where I invited him to our after-party and was rewarded with his subsequent interviews filled with reunion lies. Lesson learned. Duff joined us in 2010 and again in ’11 along with his band, Loaded, opening in Seattle and Vancouver. For me, with the exception of Izzy or Duff joining us on stage if they were so inclined somewhere in the future for a song or two, that’s enough.

There’s a seemingly endless amount of revisionism and fantasies out there for the sake of self-promotion and business opportunities masking the actual realities. Until every single one of those generating from or originating with the earlier lineups has been brought out in the light, there isn’t room to consider a conversation let alone a reunion.

Maybe if it were you it’d be different. Maybe you’d do it for this reason or that. Peace, whatever. I love our band now. We’re there for each other when the going get’s rough. We love our fans and work to give them every ounce of energy and heart we can.

So let sleeping dogs lie or lying dogs sleep or whatever. Time to move on. People get divorced. Life doesn’t owe you your own personal happy ending especially at another’s, or in this case several others’, expense.

But hey if ya gotta then maybe we can get the “no show, grandstanding, publicity stunt, disrespectful, he doesn’t care about the fans” crap out of the way as quickly as we can and let’s move on. No one’s taking the ball and going home. Don’t get it twisted. For more than a decade and a half we’ve endured the double standards, the greed of this industry and the ever present seemingly limitless supply of wannabes and unscrupulous, irresponsible media types. Not to imply anything in this particular circumstance, but from my perspective in regard to both the Hall and a reunion, the ball’s never been in our court.

In closing, regardless of this decision and as hard to believe or as ironic as it may seem, I’d like to sincerely thank the board for their nomination and their votes for Guns’ induction. More importantly I’d like to thank the fans for being there over the years, making any success we’ve had possible and for enjoying and supporting Guns N’ Roses music.

I wish the Hall a great show, congratulations to all the other artists being inducted and to our fans we look forward to seeing you on tour!!

Sincerely,
Axl Rose

Thanks for posting that. The next time anybody wants to know why I don't like Axl Rose, I can just direct them to this statement.

What an ego-driven, narcissistic, spoiled child of a human being.

And Axl's fans wonder why so many of us think he's a jerk.....

If only he had suggested Deep Purple or Rush in his place. Then he may have been on to something.

At least he's being honest though, I'll give him credit for that even though I rail against the W. Axl Rose Band and Brand as often as possible. I even suggested to my buddy that he name his band Guns 'N Roses since he only has one less original member.

However, when someone speaks the truth or offers an honest opinion they often come off as as*holes because as a people we are used to everyone lying or sugar-coating things. I don't agree with him or his choices, but I appreciate him laying it out there.

Once an ass, always an ass.

Memo to Axl Rose: no one cares anymore. Do yourself a favor and go away.

Not a big fan of Axl, never have been and his pompus attitude over the years makes him laughable. That being said he lays it out in print and I think the narrative is to the point and sets his opinion in stone. It is not derogatory and in my opinion well written (with I am sure help from his legal team).

He wants to move on and everybbody else should............my 2 cents.

Yeah, a simple, "I have no interest in re-visiting the past, I'm concentrating on the present and future. I'll look back when I retire." would have done the trick.

Instead, we get another lengthy rant about how tough it is to be Axl Rose, and self-fulfilling prophecies on how he'll have to endure any decision he makes.

Well guess what Axl? thats part of growing up. You make decisions, you accept the consequences.

Welcome to Adulthood,

Now your a marginally talented guy,

You'll get no sympathy from me.

I'd bet Miles Kennedy gets that phone call to perform with them at the RNRHOF ceremony........and I'd also bet he sounds better than Axl would have if he showed. Nobody's gonna miss him.

It was amusing to read (a while back) that Axl had filed a $5 million dollar lawsuit against former manager Irving Azoff, saying that Azoff had "sabotaged sales of 'Chinese Democracy' and failed to promote it."

I agree!!! Fu_k Axl Rose!!! He sucks and has sucked for a very long time anyway. IMO Guns N Roses don't even belong in any Hall of Fame. Maybe Slash if you include all of his solo work. Guns N Roses had one all time great unbelievable album, one very good album which was really an EP, and two half great albums with lots of filler on each. Not enough great music to qualify for any Hall of Fame IMO. I would rather see Kennedy perform with them at this point but if they announce them as Guns N Roses I bet Axl fires a big lawsuit on them for using the name which he owns the rights to. What a total a-hole Axl is once again.

I agree with a lot, if not most, of the earlier comments. Especially that Axl could have accomplished the same thing in 3 or 4 short paragraphs rather than issue the tome that he did. But I will give him credit for not getting the fans' hopes up that a reunion would occur. At least he didn't go radio-silent so that nobody knew just hours before the show whether or not he'd be there or who from the band might show up (huh-hmm... Van Halen). Or better yet, he didn't say he would be there and then no-show.

I would not let Axl Rose into the R&RHOF with a paid admission. This hall is a joke, yes most of the greats have been recognized, but the stuff they come up with yearly now, give me a break.

You people are all pretty funny. It seems that no matter what Axl does, you all hate him for it.

Aren't you all the same people who constantly say the HOF is a joke? So if that's the case, then why is it that when Axl essentially says the HOF is a joke you all attack him for it? Axl got it right when he said they've endured the DOUBLE STANDARDS, because many of you are guilty of it right now.

It really is amazing how ungrateful Axl is for the charmed life he has led. Efus hits the nail on the head about how Axl is constantly preoccupied with how difficult it is to be him.

I can appreciate that Axl feels the current version of GNR doesn't get enough respect, and that is the version of the band he is focusing his energy on. I get that.

But to think that the new lineup should be the one to perform at the Hall of Fame is just delusional. Sorry Axl, but without Slash, Izzy, etc. you would never have even been invited.

It's one thing to not show up, but is Axl really saying don't anybody DARE induct me into the Hall Of Fame without my permission?

If so, that is really setting a new gold standard for douchebaggery. In the future, douchiness will be measured in units called "Axls"

suk0, it seems that all Axl ever does is behave like a spoiled prima donna, and he is one of the worst singers to ever walk the Earth, a living parody/caricature of a bad, over the top heavy metal singer.

So yeah, I pretty much hate everything he does That's just, like, my opinion, man.....

You guys all missed the obvious anyway. He would have shown up hours after the show had ended anyway. No really he would have.

I have to laugh at some of the comments about his honesty. What honesty? In that long ramble, he actually provides no reason why he is pissed and not coming. Doesn't want to play with them? He doesn'thave to. Nor has anyone said that they were going to play. The only honest comments he made were that he won't play with them. What he doesn't add is why. And yes Axl, you are taking the ball and going home. Exactly what you are doing.

This is all just more hot air Axl Rose Band hype.

sukO - I get that you are a fan and like him. But you can't defend this guy on any grounds and acyually win the debate. I have met him, worked with them and know many of people screwed by him. I have been to and witnessed riots caused by this fools immature and unprofessional behaviour. Axl has endured double standards? Give me a break. How about being accountable for his actions? I will make no apology for saying what a piece of **** the guy is. You obviously have the right to like the band and be a fan. But would you honestly try to defend the guy's character? You likely know the story better than most here and you would dismiss everything he has done to lead us to this stage?

All he had to do was show up on time. Say thank you and move on. But he is a drama queen who is not capable of doing that.

That's funny.

Just for the record. When this was announced, I said that he would never show up and would grandstand about it. Was only a matter of time.

Whose fault? The HOF as this band should not have been inducted.
