hello..I dont write here so often anymore, but i just wanna share this and ask some questions.

the past 3 months ive been so worried about polyps and stuff on my vocal chords.ive been having 3 major colds since dec,but for a month now ive not been having any colds.but since dec i have been a little hoarse, strained and not been able to sing all the songs i sung last year.i can sing in baritone range, but very rareley i can hit the notes in kiss, journey covers, that i did last year.but i can still sing quite alot of other songs in baritone range.

But i have been worried.so worried that i almost called a doctor 2 days ago to get time to exame my vocal chords.but yesterday i googled and found what seemed a very good vocal coach. she lives far from where i live, but i rang her and she asked me to send her an email with a vid when i talk and sing.

i did a vid of Soulshine yesterday and also a vid from last year so she could hear how i sounded like then and i wrote about my worries.

2 hours later she called me and said that i dont have any polyps or noudles.she said that i wouldnt been able to sing that good.she heared i was a little hoarse, but it was not polyps, but due to singing out of my range last year,my voice said stop she said and all these colds.she said just take it easy and stay within your range, then i should be fine.she said my chords have been having a little whiplash and i need to rest, but its not polyps or anything that need surgery, she could hear that she said.

Is this common?anyone more here who can make me feel better? should i trust the vocal coach? Or should i see a doc?she told me that all i need is proper rest.there is 9 weeks to get a doc appointment.she said 5 times during our call.you dont have polyps.you need rest.anyone who have had polyps or can put my mind at ease? Cheers from Daniel

there are some sprays and teas you can try, but nothing can replace rest.

don't try to sing the high stuff right away when you start to feel stronger work up to it.

My own voice is in the bass/baritone range but I can sing some tenor when my head is clear.

when I have congestion in my sinuses from a cold or allergy then the top of my baritone range can be difficult. bass not a problem regardless.

Seems like you have a similar thing going on with all the colds.

Good luck, I really like your voice.

Part of the trouble could be how you are singing also. You sing from your throat. Especially the higher ranges from your throat/head and not from your diaphragm which puts a strain on everything at the best of times. Add in colds and/or sinus issues and it is harder/impossible to sing from your head especially anything not in your immediate range.

Some breathing exercises will help both your breathing obviously and your range. You will not be running out of steam at the end of lines.

Not meant to be critical and hope it helps. My honest opinion is that you may be trying to sing things that are not in your real range which can also damage the voice especially if singing from the throat which will put even more strain on your chords.

Bingo! Sing within your range. Change the key slightly if it doesn't compromise the integrity of the song. I sing for a living and change the key whenever I have to. You can't expect to sing like Brad Delp or Steve Perry on a regular basis. Its not a realistic goal.

Echo the taking some lessons on how to get proper support with the use of the diaphragm. If ya ever get in a band, it isn't gonna really be noticed if you take a song down a 1/2 or full step as long as everyone else is. wish you all the best.

thanks all...just got the phone with the singing coach one more time, and she tried to put my mind at ease..as i wrote, starting this thread she once again said i dont have any POLYPS,NOUDLES on my vocal chords..she listend once again to the souldshine vid i did and she said i would not been able to sing more than maybe 30 sec with polyps or noudles on my vocal cords.. she said just rest...my voice has been starined and tired of singing stuff as you folks said with my throat and singing out of my range for more than a year..suddenly the voice says stop she said..this isnt natural. she said i should first rest for some weeks and then just sing in my range..from low to high baritone.. should i trust her?

but due to having 3 colds from dec to mars and singing out of my range pretty much all of 2011 i just need a break..thats all she said..just take a break and play guitar and relax..the voice will be back, but it can take time..no my worries are, think if my voice dont get better after weeks of rest..but i cant think like that, can i? i only hurt myself..she said im sure you get better..i havent taken any rest,so since monday its singing vacation..she said to me your voice will be back..you dont have polyps or anything..belive me she said..i know what it sounds like.. so i trust her..no im gonna read a book...c heers and thnaks all.

Just follow your range. If you aren't comfortable, it's obvious when you sing. As I grew older, my range dropped, and I spent an embarrassing decade trying to hit my old notes. Sounded like Alfalfa from the Little Rascals. Awful. Forget polyps, vocal coaches, all that, just listen to yourself, and be honest.

Perfect example, listen to Dylan on "Lay Lady Lay," relaxed for a change, his voice was never that great but sounds fantastic on that song, once he left off wheezing away trying to sing higher than he was made to.
