I was reading an interview [recent] of Joe Walsh, and he said that Duane Allman gave him a coricidin bottle showed him open E tuning, and got him started on slide guitar. "Rocky mountain way" was the result of that.

A little more aside to that pops, I've also read in an interview by Joe that Duane's death steered Joe from riding motorcycles. On the James Gang Rides Again the band is pictured on choppers. Joe said he got rid of his after Duane's death because he knew he liked getting FU and that's not conducive to bike riding.

I also feel like I read somewhere that either Joe gave Duane his first Les Paul, or Duane gave Joe his first Les Paul...

I remember reading an article maybe 10 years ago where Joe Walsh made the comment Duane was always a gentleman and real pro when they ran into each other.

The interview is in the new Guitar World. Joe has good things to say about many other musicians. He gave guitars away to Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend and others. Joe learned about electronics through Ham Radio and takes apart gear to see how it works, which is how he got one of the first "talk boxes" and then his buddy redesigned it and started making them.

Great article. Joe's a heckuva guitar player. His slide on The Bomber is some good stuff, and I believe it's standard tuning.

Yes, the Guitar World interview with Joe Walsh is a good article indeed. Good insight into the person and the player.

There is a great Joe Walsh interview in one of the guitar mags from the mid 90s where he talks about Duane and using the Coricidin bottle as a slide and he talks about the day he found out Coricidin was found to stop using glass bottles. He said (summarized) that he drove straight down to the local pharmacy, ran up to the counter and said to the pharmacist, "I need a case of Coricidin cold medicine!" Walsh said the pharmacist gave him, his long hair and unkept self a long look and then Joe freaked him out even further by saying, "It's okay man, you can keep the pills! I just want the bottles!"

He tells that story on the You tube video posted above....
