"Egypt (Jimmy Giuffre)"

I thought Oteil wrote 'Egypt."

44 covers played. And people wonder why i wish they'd play more from their own catalog (although some of these covers have been on their records or Gregg's so they don't count as strictly covers to me, like "These Days" or "All My Friends" or "Come On In My Kitchen').

I have to agree that of the shows I heard and the one I managed to see in person, Gregg was the weakest link. The guy needs to recuperate and re-charge. I appreciate his efforts though.

Well it is Relix folks ... like Grateful Dead fans would know good music if they heard it. Still if the Buffalo Chip concert of GAF (which was much closer to the operation) that was shown on HDNET is indicative of Gregg's recent performance ... then maybe somebody should step in and say something ... after all we don't want this to turn into a DB & GS show ... do we???

The comments are not too different what what has been posted here, and though maybe not stated as gently as here, are pretty much on the mark.

yeah Egypt is definantly a Allman original. Love the song. The band could make some terrific songs if they wanted too. I listen to some of their recent jams on songs like No one to run with, whipping post,Rockin horse, done somebody wrong,Mtn jam. You can actually hear new material in those tunes, I don't know if it is stuff they may have have for new music or total improvisation But I like it alot. Listen to 12/0311 show on whipping post and Mtn jam it is their my friends.

Isn't there enough bashing of one of the best bands touring on here already?

We need to start importing it in from another site now?

Some people here could end up losing jobs.

Let's face it there are many fans in the Jam Band community that do not think highly of the Brothers. I've endured the rumblings of Panic and Phish fans over the years and yet the players in both aforementioned bands worship the Brothers.

98.5% of the people don't say a thing. I wouldn't worry about the criticisms, save that there is a grain of truth in each one. The ABB will do what they want. Some things can change and some things won't.

Maybe Relix was implying criticism by citing the number of covers, but look at the list, and there are some great songs there. The only one that made me cringe was Gold Dust Woman. I'll take a mixture of covers over the carbon-copy setlists of the late 90's any day!

A great song newly interpreted can be a beautiful thing. Loved this year's Watchtower.

So Dead fans don't good music?I have been listening too BOTH bands since 1970 and the abb has been my favorite band. Too be truithful the Dead did do some covers but they also did play more of there own songs. So with you implying that we don't know what good music is? Must of came out of the backside of your mouth. And oh my, they have insulted the abb for turning into nothing but a cover band too bad. Reality ! I looked at opening nights set list at the Beacon, depressing. But I did like them opening with MFT.

the talk about covers is kind of silly IMHO because it allows a veteran band to continue to provide different setlists on a nightly basis as well as to experiment and reinterpret great songs....I always look forward to hearing the new songs and interpretations....on the subject of gregg, lets face it,he wasnt himself and definitely in his current shape is a problem for the band...yes I know there are some people here who think it is sacrilege to mention it but if you were there during the recent beacon run it simply cannot be denied...get well Gregg but lets not cover our heads in the sand.

As someone who has been to a ton of ABB shows over the years, has countless bootlegs, and who happened to be at the March 25th show that Gregg missed, I have to say that show was missing something and that something was heart and soul that only Gregg can provide. He is a true blues man with a deep growl. Don't get me wrong, I worship Warren and Derek and everyone else up there, but all the technical prowess of their instruments couldn't fill the void of Gregg not being there.

And Further is doing its share of other covers too. They had a real Beatles thing going last year and played the whole second side of Abbey Road one night. Which I thought was pretty cool until I heard it. Phil doing Golden Slumbers didn't do it for me. But not to cut them - the show I saw at the Fox Theater was phenomenal! We got served Dear Prudence...

I think the Brothers show a lot of confidence and ability by reguarly breaking out covers. It also shows a sort of restlessness to keep the music fresh as opposed to sticking to the old tried and true songs. And their taste for the most part is impeccable. Plus, bringing in the guest players really keeps things exciting.

There has been another bump in their long road with Gregg's back problem but they'll get this behind them too. To me they're still one of the most vibrant bands going. With the way Gregg has been talking up the future of the band, I think he is comfortable with their importance to the fans as well as their vital purpose within the larger manufactured music scene.

Hope that didn't sound too idealistic.

Relix has a point though. I enjoy a good cover that becomes "Allmanised" but to not bring out 1-2 new songs for the Beacon run seems like they are not moving forward as a band as far as creativity goes.

I don't think Relix tried to make that point, or any other point for that matter. They just listed a bunch of numbers related to the Beacon run. Listing numbers is a long running feature in Relix. I don't see where the mag made any editorial comments. That all came from readers who are free to post their opinions just as we do here. No big deal.

Since relix has generally been favorable to the ABB, they may have intended the number as a compliment.
