.....in the end, Dickey decided to stay home
The Allman Brothers Band was honored by the Grammys with a lifetime achievement award. Alongside fellow legends Diana Ross and Glen Campbell (among others), the ABB, including original members Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, with Duane Allman's daughter Galliandra, Barry Oakley Jr., keyboardist Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and other current members took the stage to accept their awards. At the last minute, Dickey called me and asked if I would represent and accept his award. Long thought and many conversations brought him to this decision. He called me just prior to emphasize the fact that he wanted no excuses made about it. He wasn't sick, he didn't miss a plane, he simply decided not to attend. He wanted me to, first and foremost, thank his fans for staying him through all the ups and downs. He asked me to thank Bill Graham for believing in the Brothers. He said to thank Phil Walden for getting them started and producers Tom Dowd and Johnny Sandlin for keeping them going. It was a great evening. He was certainly missed. A couple of the Brothers even called Dickey to share the moment. He really appreciated the honor, he really cherishes the memories, but in the end, Dickey decided to stay home.

Would have been nice of Dickey to announce this to his fans on his website before the ceremony took place so his fans who were looking forward to seeing him accept his award didn't have to tune in and be disappointed. I am sure he knew at least days in advance that he wasn't gonna show.

I love Dickey and I am so glad he thanked his fans.
He has always been kind and generous with his fans.

I have always known this to be true.

I hope to see him again , he can always count on me to be there for Great Southern.
if the flesh is able.

His honor is well deserved for his great contributions to the arts. Willie Nelson has called him one of America's great songwriters and I don't argue with Willie.

It is bizarre that Mr Spero makes it sound like he spoke at the ceremony on behalf of Mr Betts. Does he not know we could see it for ourselves?

If Dickey's business affairs are in the hands of a man who doesn't know Duane's daughter's name and can't spell Berry Oakley correctly, that explains a lot.

On the other hand, if being Dickey's manager entails being called "at the last minute" and asked to give his acceptance speech for a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, then explaining to the world why Dickey wasn't there even though he wasn't sick and didn't miss a plane, I can see why more qualified professionals aren't lining up for the gig.

Give it a rest. Let the guy do what he wants. I am cool with that. He still got the Grammy - and deserved it as much as any of them - and none of this bull sh*t changes that!

I agree Rob.

So if Dickey asked him to go and told him who to thank, why didn't the "manager" go to the Grammys???

Who knows, but the "last minute" language might be a tipoff. Maybe Spero and/or the Grammy people got frustrated by a commitment not being honored, absent some emergency. It's one thing to decline the invite up front, but quite another to accept then cancel last minute.

at this point Im not sure why his manager had to say anything about it,
just let it be, it's over and done with and this is the way things are now.
I think chuck in a way spoke for dickey and that was the end off it.

Did you guys think maybe that was posted from a phone with that stupid auto-correct "feature"? I'd bet Dickey's manager knows how to spell their names right.

I agree... but in thinking about it , I guess that DB has been hurt by the bands past actions , and he might feel why subject himself to be around people who don't like him and spoke badly about him. We all make mistakes in life and some are buttes.. Gregg has made them , Butch has made them, but when Dickey made them it was of huge magnitudes, he did some very wrong things in his personal life ..again none of our business, I thought I'd say that because there are a select few here who bring that up for like the millionth time.. We do not know all the circumstances in any of these situations.. so with the information we are given we try to decipher which and how it turned out this way. As most of the long time fans of the ABB , it would have been a moment in time to have them all together again.. alas, it will never happen now.. It really is over . Thank God alot of the music is recorded and we can all share in the glory days of when some of the Brotherhood was real.
Maybe Dickey Betts expected to much through out the years and became callous to that, maybe the other band members depended to much on him for ~to~ long a time.. maybe one member of the band influenced all the rest.... because they became weak minded.....maybe , maybe ,maybe.
It's done and It's Over.

I am a fan of Betts... I still listen to ABB but not the current band as much.. I like them more individually then I do as a whole ..ABB.. I am happy I had the experiences of the music when it was new and fresh and very exciting. it is a shame Duane and Berry both past away so darn young, Chuck is the missing piece at times, Lamar added so much with his big bass sound and is missed, and not having Dickey Betts in the Allman Brothers in almost like a toothless smile..
But we had it once , didn't we ....

Yes, Rainy girl, we had it once, we sure did, and it was awesome.
Mr. Spero was late in his posting his announcement about Dickey's not showing up and he didn't proofread his post. But, he does do one thing right and that's keeping Dickey on the road when he wants to be, making those bookings and keeping the music alive. We gotta thank him for that.
I just hope he reads Dickey's contracts with a finer eye than the one he used to make that post!
