An impressive roster of players have signed on to pay tribute to Tommy Bolin called Great Gypsy Soul. Produced by Greg Hampton and Warren Haynes, it’s a project that brings together major players who actually perform alongside Tommy Bolin’s playing and vocals from the recording outtakes to his solo debut album, Teaser. Peter Frampton, Warren Haynes (a key supporter of the project), Nels Cline, Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, Brad Whitford, Joe Bonamassa, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Glenn Hughes and Myles Kennedy all contributed to the project.

Great Gypsy Soul will be released on 429 Records on March 27th in both a single CD format and double CD with bonus tracks. A series of promotional concerts are also in the works.

Says Warren Haynes:

Many of the guests added after the fact have a close personal connection to Tommy - all share in acknowledging his place in rock history. Watching (and hearing) it all come to fruition some 35 years later was a journey of its own - well worth the travel.

Tracklisting:

Disc 1:
1.The Grind (with Peter Frampton)
2.Teaser (with Warren Haynes)
3.Dreamer (with Myles Kennedy and Nels Cline)
4.Savannah Woman (with John Scofield)
5.Smooth Fandango (with Derek Trucks)
6.People People (with Big Sugar and Gordie Johnson)
7.Wild Dogs (with Brad Whitford)
8.Homeward Strut (with Steve Lukather)
9.Sugar Shack (with Glenn Hughes and Sonny Landreth)
10.Crazed Fandango (with Steve Morse)
11.Lotus (with Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Huges and Nels Cline)

Disc 2, Bonus CD:
1.Flying Fingers (with Oz Noy and Nels Cline)
2.Marching Bag - Movement One (with Nels Cline, Bolin, Greg Hampton, John Scofield, Sonny Landreth)
3.Marching Bag - Movement Two (with Nels Cline, Bolin, Steve Lukather, Derek Trucks, Peter Frampton)
4.Marching Bag - Movement Three (with Gordie Johnson, Bolin, Nels Cline, Oz Noy, Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, Joe Bonamassa)
5.Marching Bag - Movement Four (with Nels Cline, Bolin, Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa, Oz Noy, Brad Whitford, Peter Frampton)

I have been wondering when this was coming out. I have been hearing about this I think since early last year. I hope it will be good. Some times these "tribute" things are a stinker.

Crazed Fandango is the song I want to hear the most. Morse will tear it up.

IMHO Crazed Fandango from Ebbets Field 1974 is one of Tommys best recorded performamces.

Very curious about the supporting concerts and whether Derek and/or Warren attend.

Can't wait for the release!

I wonder if they use Tommy's vocals. I've been wanting to hear Warren sing a Bolin tune or two for a long time.

Some additional info:

Tommy Bolin Tribute Album Includes Peter Frampton, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Brad Whitford, Steve Lukather and More

Tommy Bolin was part of the rock scene for just a short time, playing with the James Gang and Deep Purple, but his legacy has been felt by many of today's greats. Some of those are coming together for the tribute album, Great Gypsy Soul, out on March 27 on 429 Records.

Produced by Greg Hampton and Warren Haynes, it's a remarkable project that brings together major players who actually perform alongside Tommy Bolin's playing and vocals from the recording outtakes to his solo debut album Teaser. Peter Frampton, Warren Haynes (a key supporter of the project), Nels Cline, Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, Brad Whitford, Joe Bonamassa, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Glenn Hughes and Myles Kennedy all contribute to this amazing project.

The album will be released in both a single CD format and double CD with bonus tracks. A series of promotional concerts are also in the works.

From the press release:

Tommy Bolin was the quintessential guitar prodigy who focused his talents within the burgeoning rock/metal scenes of the early 70's as well as mastered a highly lauded jazz fusion technique, catching the attention of rock tastemakers and guitar legend peers. It was just a matter of time before Bolin was making a name for himself playing on projects as diverse as Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" project (considered one of the great jazz fusion recordings of all time), replacing Joe Walsh in the James Gang, playing session work on seminal fusion projects by Moxy and Alphonse Mouzon, to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. With the release of his second solo album "Private Eyes", what should have been a red letter moment for Bolin, opening up for Jeff Beck in Miami, sadly turned tragic as Bolin was found dead of an overdose shortly after the gig.

Says Warren Haynes: "Many of the guests added after the fact have a close personal connection to Tommy—all share in acknowledging his place in rock history. Watching (and hearing) it all come to fruition some 35 years later was a journey of its own—well worth the travel."

Fantastic that so many years after his death, he could bring together such a talented roster of players in tribute. This should be a very interesting release. How have I not heard of this before today??

Hmmm????

Did anyone else get or know this?

I am kinda confused or maybe I misunderstood or miss read it.

Great Gypsy Soul is a newly recorded tribute to Tommy...with music from original outtakes and alternative versions, with today's hottest guitar slingers playing and singing on top of these original multitracks...along with Tommy and his band. All tracks contain Tommy's original guitar work and vocals.

This is seems to be guest artists layered over Tommy's orignal work from what I read and heard form the link above. Putting guitar tracks and vocals over the original works. Thats kinda strange. I thought it was going to be the artist own version or interpreatation of his work.

Kinda dissapointed in away. Maybe I just need to hear it some more.

That's exactly what it is, modern day musicians playing along to tracks from Tommy's "Teaser" album. Something similar was done many years ago to Hendrix tracks. That release was "Midnight Lightning."

I'm trying to remember if these are takes that have never been heard before or not. Maybe Jim can help me on that one.

Although, there are two songs "Sugar Shack" & "Smooth Fandango" that were not on the original Teaser release.

On the bonus disc is "Flying Fingers" and a cut by that title was on the "Whips & Roses I" release. No idea if it will be the same as that just with additional guitar parts added or not. And, the multi-part "Marching Bag" didn't appear (at least under this name) on the original "Teaser" or either "Whips & Roses" releases.
