I'm curious what everybody's internet speed is.......

I'm on wireless & live in the sticks, so I'm not to good, some days better than others, a lot of stopping & starting on vids sometime, I have watched some live streams that worked for the most part [ Mountain Jam etc. ]

19ms ping
38.24 Mbps down
8.21 Mbps up

BT Infinity (I'm in the UK) fibre optic... Very good, tho they throttle the hell out of certain ports... p2p I can understand, but they throttle a lot of others too - IMAP mail for some reason is absurdly slow unless you use their own mailservers...

I have Hughnet so my speed varies from 1 MBPS to 6 KBPS.
Normally in the wee hours of the morning I can average 250 to 100 KBPS.
But there are mornings where the speed starts at 1MBPS, then slowly drops to any number between 1000 & 50 KBPS.
So I do all my downloading then, where there is no FAP limit.
But in the evening to midnight, forget about it. Speeds drop to 3 to 6 KBPS.

Damn sight better than dial up, and I'm happy with Hughesnet.
Not as happy as I would be if I had Fios, but for $39.99/ mo, it's OK.

Thanks.... Y'all a great bunch....

I wish I could really complain but....... 5 yrs back I had very bad dial up [ 60's Verizon lines ] almost non working...

Then a small company opened bringing wireless to our county, luck have it I have an antenna in a corn field in front of my house that was our 911 and a farmer had a 2 way radio set up on it.

Then in 03 a tornado took it out......

Fast forward to 07, The wireless bought the tower & asked if I would power the antenna for a trade of free service.....

I have not paid for service since .....

Reason is that a new pole & service for them would be an automatic $50 a month electric bill vs. giving me free service.

The power used on my end is like one rotation of the meter per month, so no real draw on my power....

Just wish I had a better than D or F rating.....lol.... Like I say tho.... dial up is not an option & Hughsnet is the only other option out here in the sticks....

That .22 number means you will have trouble getting anything up.

A megabit is a measure of data. 8 bits = 1 byte.

1 megabit (Mb) = 0.125 megabyte (MB)

So, in the old days of 128kbps mp3 files, 1 minute of music equaled roughly 1 megayte (MB) or 8 Megabits (Mb)

So if your download speed is 8Mb/s (8 megabits per second), you will download one minute of music in 1 second. So if a file is 10MB (80Mb) then it would take 80 seconds to download that file. the cable speeds are much higher like the 35.6Mb/s = 4.45MB/s so if you had a 4 minute mp3 like the one I mentioned above you could download it in 1 second.

The upload speed is how fast you transmit data out to the internet. The terminology is the same, it just represents the outbound flow which is usually slower so the response time is quicker when opening websites etc. where you are downloading data from the website's server. If equal bandwidth was given to upload and download you would notice a lot of lag time opening sites, downloading data and streaming video etc. This set-up is referred to as "asymmetric."

Most websites don't really need much info from your computer so the upload speed really only becomes important when torrenting, filesharing or streaming media.

Think of it like an 10 lane highway leading to a busy city and 8 lanes are inbound and 2 lanes are outbound, the traffic would move faster inbound.

The ping test is measured in milliseconds and shows how fast your machine communicates with a server on the Internet and back. If you experience slow response from Internet applications it could be due to a higher than desired ping. It could mean data is being lost. Most broadband connections will give a ping test result below 100 ms.

So if your ping test shows 13ms that means data made it to a server and back in 13 milliseconds or 13/1000 of a second. In this case lower is better.

I hope that helps those of you who mentioned you have no idea what the numbers mean. This was a quick overview and hopefully easy to understand.

DL = 8.09Mbps
UL = 4.01
Ping = 9ms

Comcast. On a one year "trial" plan that only costs me an extra $5/month for the wireless router added to my basic cable plan. I'll bet it gets slower after the "trial" period.

Download Speed- 4.94 Mbps
Upload Speed- 0.75 Mbps
PING- 44ms

Have CenturyLink Modem and wireless router. I live out in the country and though I pay for the highest speed they "offer" they made it clear from the start that because of my location, I wouldn't get the speed I am paying for, but need to pay for it to get anything resembling highs speed. Frustrating, and ALL YouTube viewings by me need to buffer for a while before I can view them.
Most days I am satisfied, but know I am paying too much! Glad I can get online and don't have to use the dialup I used for YEARS til they offered high speed out here 4 years ago..........
