Back around 1969 the Atlanta paper the Great Speckled Bird had an article about the band and printed a full frontal nude pic of the band all standing up in a creek. A picture from the same photo session with them kneeling in the creek was on the inside of the first album. I was in the 8th grade at the time and my parents threw away the paper when they saw it and I never saw the picture again. Anyone else seen that photo, I was just curious.

Seen them(although not the Speckled Bird) once from a copy of the negatives. (the actual photo sessions from Otis Redding's ranch...or farm, was it?).

I think Stephen Payley took those shots. He took some AWESOME pictures of the original band.... like the one with Duane & Dickey playing their guitars in the hotel bed.

I've got a copy of the original Great Speckled Bird in which that photo appeared. Actually I have probably 70 or 80 different issues from 1969-73.

Hophead that is too cool. The Great Speckled Bird is only a far off memory in my past. I'd love to see an issue some time. It is what kept this young kid plugged into the Atlanta music scene from his home in Chattanooga. It was really a great paper and it really covered th ABB along with other great bands such as Hampton Grease Band, Eric Quincy Tate, and others.

The photo I'm talking about has them all standing up leaving nothing to the imagination. I do think that the photo above is a great shot. What great memories. I've become very nostalgic with the Atlanta Pop album.

The shot above from the album was also used in a full page promo in Rolling Stone.

Butch posted a funny story about the picture shoot in question. In the shot you'll notice Butch standing in order to cover a bandage from a wound. The shot in deed was shot at reddings farm. The original shots of the band with the complete frontal shots exposed eventually wound up on Jerry Wexler's desk in New York(then Atlantic records exec). Wexler's response to Duane when he came to NY to discuss the album was "it's for sure you’re not the natural leader of the band".

I hope the full frontal shot was taken BEFORE the above photo. I can imagine the water was right cool, and...you know what a cool shot does to a man's package.

Reminds me of the time in high school when a bunch of us went skinny-dipping and someone stole our clothes! The walk (trot, actually) back to the car was brisk! I was just glad as hell we didn't get pulled over by the cops for anything on the drive home! That would've been tough to explain!

And yes, there was shrinkage. Significant shrinkage.

I think it was Red Dog who told the story that Bill Graham put the full frontal pics up at the Fillmore East, some were embarrassed and some were mobbed.Yes that water was deep...and cold.
