Any fans out there. My father is a big Tom Waits fan. I have not warmed up to his voice. I know he is a great song writer and well respected by fellow musicians. My father puts him in the elite with Robert Hunter. I love the Mule covers of his tunes, Get Behind The Mule, Going Out West, Jesus Going Be Here. Any thoughts?

One of the absolute greatest songwriters, poets and performers there ever was.

Totally unique. There has never been anyone like him and there never will be. I'm more of a fan of his early stuff, circa early - late '70s, but he is a serious artist. And I don't use that term often. His beat - rap stuff from that period is astounding. You just can't believe that anyone could put together words that fast, with such irony, humor and social insight.

I think it helps to have read stuff by the Beats, like Kerouac, to really get where this guy is coming from.

His voice is an acquired taste for sure, like Dylan's. But I don't think most people listen to him for his voice. It's the wordplay.

My .02.

Huge Waits fan here. I own everything from 1973's "Closing Time" all the
way up to 2011's "Bad as Me." If you are interested in becoming a Waits
fan I'd recommend starting with the following CD's: Rain Dogs, Mule Variations,
Orphans (Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards) or Alice. For his early period, I
recommend Small Change, Nighthawks at the Diner or Blue Valentine.

Watched his '78 ACL perfomance that re-aired over Christmas. Not sure I get him, but a unique performance. Full episode:

I bought his latest CD released this October and I was very disappointed. The vocals are very annoying. I gave it another try and it got ejected after the third song.

I think that I'm a bi-polar fan ( no offense to those with real bi-polar conditions ).
I buy all his records....sometimes it all makes perfect sense..the lyrics, music and his voice.
Other times, it just sounds like a train wreck. Depends on my mood, I guess.

Back in the day I loved Tom Waits. Had all his albums and listened to him all the time. Over the years I've moved away from that, but still enjoy an occaisional listen. He's not for everybody. Back when I used to host parties at my house all the time if I thought it was time for the party to end I'd put on some Waits and everybody would go home within 15 minutes. It worked every time.

I got into him because I saw him do "On the Nickel" on Letterman many years ago and went out and bought Heartattack and Vine (still his best album, imho). He is phenomenal. And one of the best live performers I've ever seen! Unfortunately, he doesn't tour much and plays odd places, but search it out and see him if you can! Not a bad actor, either.

That's what the reviews say too. Got 4 stars from "The Week" magazine. I heard one track that I didn't really care for but have yet to hear the rest of the new album. I'd say I'm a casual fan and do enjoy most of the very limited amount of his catalog that I've heard.
