Metamorphosis is my favorite Iron Butterfly album I love the combo of Rhino & Pinera. Sad news. At least his work is immortal. RIP

The Captain Beyond album is part of my musical DNA -- being able to see them play it live in that Montreaux footage is a treat every single time I pop in the tape
Rest In Peace brother Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt

This was posted on Danny Toler's Facebook page..........

I remember sitting under a table umbrella in Rhino's backyard eating oysters on crackers with cocktail sauce topped with horseradish sauce talking about the old days getting ripped off by everyone in the music business and telling stories that would make fans hate their heroes.
Really a fun day and we did this several times. Gary Guzzardo was always there so you can only imagine the tales. Larry was a wonderful friend and definitely one of my musical heroes. Larry had a love for people and music. He will definitely be missed. He has now met our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I love you Larry and will keep you alive in my heart. May God keep you forever.
Your brother, ddt

Sorry to hear this. I saw Larry many times playing with the Second Coming at Jacksonville Beach. They were a really good band.

Captain Beyond. The self titled first album, a friend has it with the 3D cover, and Sufficiently Breathless are two of the greatest unknown albums in rock & roll.

RIP Rhino

Sad to hear that he passed away. RIP

Classic Rock magazine did a great article on Capt Beyond a few months ago. It was a reminder of some albums that I hadn't played in a long time. Interesting to read their take on the history and their troubles with Capricorn and Walden. Just as I listen again and I read that he has died. Shame

I'm bummed. Here's my memory of Rhino: I went to a concert at The Hollywood Bowl in 1972, I was 17. The bill was Black Sabbath, Gentle Giant and Captain Beyond. Of course I was there to see Sabbath. I had heard of Gentle Giant, a progressive rock band on the order of King Crimson. Trust me, they didn't fare well in front of a rowdy Sabbath crowd. Captain Beyond? My buddy and I had no idea who they were, and I don't think hardly anyone there did, either. Fortunately we got there on time!!

Captain Beyond's set consisted of their entire first record, "Captain Beyond", from start to finish, about 40 minutes. They knocked the crowd BACKWARDS. They got a standing ovation when they were done, and like I said, this from a crowd that going in had no idea who in the hell they were. If you have ever heard that first record, you know exactly what I'm talkin' 'bout! It's a classic. Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt was a mass of long frizzy hair covering his face, fingers flying on his axe with amazing, slashing riffs. I'll never forget that show. It must have taken me all of about three days to get down to my local record store and pick up "Captain Beyond".

Sad that they were a Capricorn band because Capricorn at the time was promoting Southern rock bands like ABB. Captain Beyond just never got the proper promo; I believe they could have been HUGE if handled properly. All it would have taken was a lot of opening bills like that night and people would have caught on very quickly. FYI, if you don't know, Captain Beyond's lead singer was Rod Evans, who was Deep Purple's first vocalist and sang the hit "Hush". The drummer, Bobby Caldwell, came from The Johnny Winter Band and the bass player, Lee Dorman, came from Iron Butterfly, as did Rhino. An all-star lineup to be sure.

RIP Mr. Reinhardt. You will always have a special musical place in my heart.

Good observation about the Capricorn connection as the reason Captain Beyond never made it big. Whenever I played either of those two albums people always asked " who is this band"?

This month's issue of CR has a great article on the making of Eat A Peach. Great photos of Duane and some real good quotes from Gregg, Dickey, Butch and Jaimoe that I hadn't read before.

No, but Danny Wiess who was also in Iron Butterfly was one of the 2 guitarists in Rhinoceros. A great band with deep soul and R&B roots that should have been huge. One of my all time favourites, play their vinyl all the time.

Danny Weiss is still going strong btw, great Tele chicken picker.
